Plaques

Plaques(noun)a thin, flat plate or tablet of metal, porcelain, etc., intended for ornament, as on a wall, or set in a piece of furniture.

“On its face, the whole project is Stalinist: Just as the Soviet dictator purged historical photographs to remove his defeated rivals from the record, this aims to take down (or annotate with politically correct plaques) monuments raised in the past on the grounds that, wow, some New Yorkers no longer see things the same way.” “De Blasio’s begging for trouble with this ‘monument review’ commission”

When I encounter the word Plaques, I have no idea what it mean. I never heard of it and context clues wasn’t helping me at all. After I read the definition, it gave me a picture of an award, an award that can be hang on the wall or set in a piece of furniture as the definition said. I thought it’s just a piece of round metal that we receive for our achievements but it’s way different than I thought until I found a picture online. I’ve figured that a plaques is what we use for “hall of fame” award in grades school. I’ve seen it multiply time but never knew that it has their own name; plaques.

noun sub·stan·tive \ ˈsəb-stən-tiv
Substantive is  a word or word group functioning syntactically as a noun.
I encountered the word substantive in the blogging guidelines for English class
what I thought the word  substantive too mean  was totally  something else then what I though
the word to mean. I tried using it in a sentence to see if I really understood what It meant
now that I looked the word up it means to function together as a noun. Not what I thought the
word to mean was to do something a whole lot of times that’s what I though substantive to
mean  to do to much of. Now that I have the understanding of the word now I know
what it means by the word substantive  when I read the blogging guidelines. Now I can use the
word substantive in a sentence. W e have a substantive amount of work to cover in the class. so
now that I understand the word and can use the word substantive in a sentence I know what the
word really means when I see the word again.

Usury

usury, noun, the lending of money with an interest charge for its use; especially :the lending of money at exorbitant interest rates.

“the Sumerian ruler Uruinimgina wrote these words as he took power in a Mesopotamian city. He claimed that his reforms freed citizens from usury, burdensome controls, hunger, theft, and murder..” (The West In The World, Pg 3)

I found the word while reading in my western civilizations textbook. I was confused by the meaning because I’ve never heard of the word. I saw that in the context of the book it must have been some criminal act, since it was surrounded by similarly criminal acts. But now I know that the word means to lend money with high interest rates. And that the original rulers of western civilizations helped to manage interest rates.

Commission

Commission: (Noun) an authorization or command to act in a prescribed manner or to perform prescribed acts.

“Design world legends Lorraine Wild, Louise Sandhaus, and Rick Valicenti recently formed the trans-continental partnership Wild LuV, which is allowing them to work together and tackle big commissions that draw on all of their talents (https://www.wildluv.com/)”

While I was reading the essay by Ellen Lupton “Why Collaborate” I happened to stumble upon the word “commission”. While I was reading the sentence the word was placed in, i was at a lost because i couldn’t make any sense out of it. The reason i couldn’t fully understand the sentence was because I thought the word “commission” meant a fee or a form of payment. So I decided to look up the word to see if my definition of the word was right. Upon looking it up I found that my definition wasn’t all that wrong seeing as it was one of the many definitions of the word; but in this context it meant something different. So as i read the definitions i found one that fits the context. In this context the sentence meant the group Wild LuV are able to tackle commands that forced them to do and act in a manner they didn’t wish to. It also crossed my mind that it might also portray Wild LuV tackling commissions of others.

Critiques

Critiques (noun): a criticism or critical comment on some problem, subject, etc.

Link: http://www.dictionary.com/browse/critique?s=t

The word critiques was found in the Project #2; the Monument Surveying

“Offer and receive critiques, and use them to improve your work product.” Found on page 2.

When I encounter the word critiques, I thought of criteria but when I put the word in, it doesn’t sound right. I realize criteria doesn’t help you improve your work like the second part of the sentence. I thought of another word, criticism. When I plug the word in, it makes sense and when I look it up, I was right. Came to think about it, the word critiques gave some club of the meaning like crit and also the last part of the sentence. We can only receive criticism to improve our paper.

Frequency

Frequency:  (Noun) The number of repetitions of a periodic process in a unit of time

The word was found on the First page of the Guidelines for Blogging on the Openlab Packet, it is the first Title in Bold.

Blog Frequency, Quantity, & Deadlines

When i received the handout i immediately skimmed through the first page and saw the Bold title “Blog Frequency, Quantity, & Deadlines” I Definitely heard and knew what the word was but i just couldn’t think of a definition at the time. It was always one of those words that i knew but could never really define. I tried to read the rest of the page to see if i could figure it out on my own and i thought that the word was similar to persistence I was kind of correct at the time but i looked up the word to see for myself, i know know the true definition.

Conventions

Conventions (noun): a rule of conduct or behavior

“Blogging can be understood to have a particular form and genre, with it’s own set of conventions and characteristics–just like any other mode of writing. This is true when we consider blogs as a form of journalism. Blogs can also be thought of to be a format, like a notebook or a chalkboard, and therefore open to the format of the author’s or authors’ needs.” (Guidelines for Blogging on the OpenLab)

I understood Conventions as the word itself, but I never quite learned the actual definition. It’s clear now that the passage is telling me that blogging has it’s own set of rules that I have to follow. It’s not quite like social media where informal writing is acceptable. There are different rules for behavior.
