This glossary assignment was a pretty good assignment to start off our college career. Unfortunately I had a bunch of other projects and studying to do with other classes so I was a bit backed up in terms of this assignment. I feel like if i had the time and did it the way it was suppose to be done it would of been better for me in the long run. Looking for specific complex words to write and look up and also reading my peers words really helped me with learning and understanding new words. When ever we got a new article to read i would always circle or underline the words so that I would be prepared to write about it in the glossary. Sadly i did a lot of this last minute but the good thing is that I had a bunch of interesting words already underlined. Back in High School Sometimes in class or at home while i’m reading i would be glancing at particular words trying to figure out what they mean’t and most of the time I used context clues to assume what it mean’t. I never really used to look up words that often and this was a bad idea, using context clues is good but it would of been better if I had actually looked at the real definitions and stopped assuming. This assignment increased my vocabulary and definitely affected my reading process for the better. When ever i’m reading an article and I don’t understand a particular word ill definitely look it up for myself right there on the spot. I also enjoyed reading other classmates Glossary Words just so I can increase my vocabulary even more.

Reflection on Glossary

I personally did not find the glossary useful. I strongly believe a glossary entry for a college course is not useful because we should be given more challenging work. As college students we shoul be responsible for looking up words we do not know. A project that challenged our vocabulary Ā I believe would have been more effective. A challenge not only challenges our knowledge we gain more useful skills. In addition, the range of sources we were given did not offere a lot of challenging words. If we would have been given a larger range of info to look from maybe the assignment would have been more useful. I personally had trouble looking for words i did not know because most the language in the passages given were understandable. Nevertheless, this assignment was very easy and simple not impossible to complete.

Circulation

Noun

passage or transmission from person to person or place to place

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/circulation

city tech library instructions

“stop by the circulation desk to activate your ID”

When i read this the first type of circulation that came to mind was blood circltuion but obviously that is not the circulation referred here. The definition lets me understand the circulation here refers that the circulation desk is where there is a constant flow.

Sponsor

Noun

one who assumes responsibility for some other person or thing

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sponsor

City Tech Library Instructions’

“who is the author/ publisher/source/sponsor?

I thought i knew what a sponsor was but I was confused by the way it was used in this sentence. I looked it up and realized a sponsor is not just someone who supports another individual but someone who takes responsibility too. Now I understand the context that sponsor was used in this sentence.

Manual

Adjective

worked or done by hand and not by machine

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/manual

Syllabus

“use digital and manual tools”

I didn’t understand what the professor meant by manual tools. I thought she refereed to sources of information but the definition meant sources of information but that are not online. I have now a clear understanding of what type of s research the professor would like me to use.

Tags

Noun

piece of hanging or attached material

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/tags

Guidelines for blogging on the Openlab

“much like a table of contents and an index, categories and tags”

Tags has many definitions so i decided to pick this word to look up to see which definition is being used here. The one that i found that makes the most sense here is one i used above. To make a post we use tags to have other related material be attached as well.

Taking the time to remember the start of the semester and receiving the glossary assignment, I am astonished on how time went by so fast. At first I thought the glossary words were going to be a wast of time and energy. I was not used to looking words up, Ā and I think the professor wanted us to learn this skill. I am a person who does not take advantage of technology for educational purposes. For this assignment, I took technology in account when looking up words. I became more aware of what I read during class and how the words play together to make sense. If I didn’t understand what the word meant by context clues, I would use my phone to search up the definition of the word. Not only do I look up words that I don’t understand but I also now look up words that I hear throughout the day.Ā Now during the final weeks of the semester I see why looking up words is very important. With the skill that the professor brought upon us, we are able toĀ analyzeĀ theĀ text more efficiently. I see the importance of expanding our vocabulary, and the only way to do this is by taking the time and lookin the word up and learning the meaning.

Achingly

Adverb

in an aching manner

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/achingly

We want privacy but cant stop sharing

“its hard to argue for the value of privacy when people eagerly share so much achingly personal information on social media”

I didn’t understand how the word achingly was used in this sentence. However, once i read the definition i understand. People post information online without thinking of possible consequences. That is why it aches because they may regret it because of the consequences it has brought.

Incompatible

Adjective

incapable of being held by one person at one time ā€”used of offices that make conflicting demands on the holder

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/incompatible

We want privacy, but cant stop sharing

“understand how much surveillance is incompatible with a free society”

The definition helped me understand that being watched for some individuals is not okay. According, to the definition there is a conflict involved. Being watched is so inconvenient that some individuals have a conflict because they are uncomfortable.
