Research Assignment

When mentioning a 5 to 8 page paper its usually scary for me to think of what given topics I can write so much about. I have to think of which topic is of best interest to me and what am I going to enjoy  writing about since its long paper. I make my self a small draft and write down what I can write about to make things more easier. This helps out a lot and by then things go more smoother and I’m more comfortable writing my paper. I would really enjoy though if the Research paper was a Broader topic, that way it would be more exciting to write about it.

Research proposal difficulties

Choosing a topic was difficult enough for me but when it come to narrowing it down and trying to get the information needed to write this 5 to 8 page paper will be even harder. But thanks to Badke I am able to narrow down and find the information that i will need when I try to search it in the frustrating search engines. Now i can use different strategies like using the word and, or, not to find the proper info i need for my research topic. Probably the most difficult part for me would be the annotated bibliography because it would be my first time in doing it.

When narrow isn’t narrow enough Oct. 21

For me it was fairly easy to decide on a topic I wanted to take on for the research paper. The difficulty came in narrowing it down to something precise enough and manageable for a 5 to 8 page paper. In attempting to narrow my topic, I ended up asking myself more questions than can be covered in the paper. Badke says that a good research project should only deal with one issue expressed by one question. In choosing that one question, I have to decide which issue I am most interested in and which has the most adequate resources to successfully research and develop into a paper.

What would I do without Badke?

If I didn’t read the appendix of Badke’s book, I would have probably received a bad grade for my research paper.  Before reading and discussing what I wanted to write about for my research paper, my topic was very broad and it contained too many questions. On the sheet of paper Professor Leonard handed out a few weeks ago, I had written several questions for my proposal. Now I know that I initially made mistake. Without reading the appendix my research question would’ve been too broad and my research paper would be filled with just random questions that all referred to plagiarism. Now, after reading Badke’s book and discussing my paper with Professor Leonard, hopefully my paper shall be much more focused.

In the Beginning.

In the beginning, there was the idea.

In the beginning, there was the idea.

Being able to select a topic from so many, is a major difficulty I have come across while choosing a research topic. Putting time and effort into writing a well-researched paper, makes me want to make sure I pick a solid topic. I want to discover more about the topic and develop my writing techniques, thus having an interesting topic is important (makes it more fun). Also knowing the research topic has enough reference material to back up the topic I chose is another concern. Briefly reading about my topics on the internet and recalling some readings we received in class allows me to be more confident in narrowing down a topic. Everything has been explained about the assignment, the separate assignments for one paper gives us more time to understand each process. The annotated bibliography is what I really want to learn more about, because putting bibliographies together has always puzzled me.

Summary of today (10/16), and reading/blogging for Monday 10/21

Today we began our discussion of the research process, focusing on selecting and narrowing a topic, and deciding upon preliminary research strategies. Slides from today are available here.

For Monday 10/21, please read the following in Badke: Appendix 1 pp. 223-257, and review chapter 3 pp. 42-48.

Your first research journal blog post is due on Monday. Please write one blog post of at least 100 words that addresses these questions:

You are working on choosing a topic and developing a research question for your paper. What difficulties (if any) have you encountered as you work on your research proposal?
What strategies (if any) have you used successfully during this work?
What questions (if any) do you have about the assignment?

Looking forward to reading your topic proposal drafts! I will try to get comments and provisional grades to you before Monday.

Taking Charge

What is the motivation behind a great research paper? When doing research our goal is focused on finding all the relevant search links that will help us accomplish the goal of having a great research paper that covers all the issues related to the topic being discussed. To be sure that these goals are met we must create a strategy and plan out exactly what subtopics we would like to be covered.
Its always very important to be sure that a great search engine is being used to accomplish the first step in creating a great research paper. Its pretty common for a researcher to look into google as the first step into looking for in depth research engine on their topic. We all know how academically weak google can be. Its always vital to look into the library as your first stop when doing research. Keeping in mind how vital organization and structure is will be the road to success when creating a great paper.

What is a Database, how does a search engine work?

What is a database, how does a search engine work ?

A collection of data that can be found using categorized procedures are called a database. The amount of information is infinite but with a database it’s organized. Commands such as: OR, AND, and NOT serve as three main keywords that helps narrow down your search to relevant links on what you are searching for. Other options that can be used are Hierarchies. Hierarchies help by filtering out the context of a phrase avoiding confusion on the meaning of the keyword.
Most websites receive traffic from search engines through generic category keywords and branded keywords. This all varies depending on how you spelled out a word and the language that was used. The ideal way to get more traffic is to find what term people use most to search the website, and include that word in the site for more traffic.

Search engine optimization and international branding

In our everyday life, we use search engine to find information. According to Agostini, most websites receive traffic from search engines through two types of keywords. Generic category keywords which defined as general word we use such as green tee shirts and branded keyword which search by brand name. In his experiment on Yandex.ru, search result came out differently depending on letters and language. Even miss typed words will display different result. Most sites use these terms and modify to their website to get more traffic. Agostini argues that this method used by search engine can be misleading and effective at the same time. So we must be able to aware of it.

Notes from today, and reminder about tomorrow’s reading & assignments

Today we discussed the mechanics of searching, databases, and Boolean searching. Continue to use the search strategies we discussed — AND, OR, and NOT, “phrase searching,” truncation using the * symbol, and nested searching using parentheses around synonyms–and consider if your search results are different, better, worse, unexpected, etc. Slides from today are available here.

We meet tomorrow–Wednesday–as usual. On Wednesday, we will begin our discussion of the research process: assessing your research needs, preliminary strategies, and topic development. Please read Badke, chapter 2 and comment on one or 2 classmates’ blog posts for Wednesday. The DRAFT of your research topic proposal is due by 10 am as an email attachment to me, or turned in at the beginning of class.
