Copyright. The broken system.

Copyright is the owners/creators rights to material they have created. It’s meant to protect a person’s intellectual property from others use. Others would have to ask/get legal use of a copyright. Often times, they’re are royalties and other payments made to use copyrights. It sounds like a pretty good way to protect your copyright material. The copyright system is far from perfect. Since obtaining copyrights often times require monetary compensation, there is room for abuse of the system. Material that seems similar can receive legal repercussions. A lot this controversy happens in the music industry. Copyright owners charge an absurd amount of money for the use of their songs. In particular, the song, “Happy birthday,” requires a large amount of money just to be able to sing it in like a television show. If the copyright royalties is not paid, the company that owns the copyright to it will sue. Copyright in theory is a great idea that protects many people’s intellectual property, but the system could be better to prevent future lawsuits.

I totally agree with you on the fact that copyright is a good idea and certain laws could be changed to prevent certain lawsuits. I don’t think it would be fair if someone gets a lawsuit against them for downloading music meanwhile almost everyone does it and goes freely. There are certain things like movies and art work that I feel are justified to have these copyrights but things like music downloading should be given leniency. We often hear certain songs that sound similar or have a similar tune do artists really pay that copyright to make a song with a similar tune or is changing the tune just a loophole.

I, too, agree with the notion of copyright laws, and certain changes to be made for prevention. However, music now does have certain melodies that sound similar to other music. This is called music sampling. Its the step of taking a portion or sample of a tune and alternating it or reusing it to make a different sound in the song. Music artists and producers who do music sampling do pay copyright laws to make a song with a similar tune or loopholes to the artist. If they do use a sample of the song with permission, they have abused the laws and a lawsuit is filed against the artist or producer.
