Complexity Behind Search Engines – Destiny Modeste

While readings Liddy’s “How a Search Emgine Works”Ā  I learned alot about the complexity behind search engines. I knew it was a lot of work because I had spoken to an employee of Google before and she had somewhat explained how it worked. Ā Search engines always give us the easiest and more simple answers when we searched something and I always felt it left with a lot more work to do opposed to helping me out (in terms of doing more work lol). I do appreciate the great amount of work that goes behind creating a search engine and I understand that I too, have to put in more work in searching through all those pages to find more information that will better my papers or what ever I’m looking up in the long run.

Blog Post 9 – Ahmad Woods

Would it sound crazy if I said search engines controls the internet? Maybe the word “controls” sounds a bit strong nearly implying that search engines are a collective internetĀ IlluminatiĀ of sorts. However search engines do hold a large amount of power because it ultimately decides what we eventually click on. Why do you think corporations pay top dollar to have their web pages featured in Google’s first page search? I mean that has a lot to do with the fact that people normally do not look pass the first page but yeah.

The process behind searching through a search engine is rather intricate but the article explaining it excluded page ranks which is a big part of it all.

Homework_9 Database

While reading chapter 3 of Badke’s book I finally found the answer in how to do a better research while using certain databases. We all might use google, library databases and etc to find information for our research papers and may find our selves going through many given results until we find the right one. That is as Badke explained we type for example ” interact ” and we get many results that include the word interact. His insights were very helpful, to make sure we use the right keyword(s) to find the “better ” and close result to what we might be looking for.

Homework #9 ā€“ Charles Baculima-Castillo

The first reaction I had when I read Liddy’s article about search engines was that I was mind blown. I had an idea that how a search engine works would be complicated but I had no idea that there were so many steps revolving around this process. One aspect that I greatly wanted to touch on was the “stop words”. Stop words is a step that pretty much eliminates and negates common words like “the” and “is”. This step is really important because without this, someone can have a much harder time to search what they really want because these words would cause interference.

homework #9 search engine liddy

After reading the article on Liddy’s “How a Search Engine Works” I always noticed a similarity in searches and how they somehow linked to my preferences. At first I did not pay much attention to it, but now I realize how a search engine refines’s exactly what your looking for based on key terms or how something is typed into the search engine. at times, searches are on point and sometimes they are difficult to find. Now I realize it may be important to improve searches by shortening what your looking for to have a more refined search that can directly lead you to what your looking for. an “Inverted file isolates and metatags subdocument pieces.” This helps information link together for a better outcome.

Notes from today, and reading and blogging assignment for Wednesday, October 17

Today we discussed metadata, controlled vocabularies, taxonomies, and folksonomies. I hope you got a chance to experiment with blog post tagging using the controlled vocabulary of the LC subject headings. Slides from today are available here.

On Wednesday we’ll begin our discussion of the mechanics of searching, including how search engines works and search engine optimization. For Wednesday, 10/17 please read the following:

Your blogging assignment is one reading response blog post.

Remember to get in touch if you have any questions about the research topic proposal, due on Wednesday, October 24. I’ll make time to continue working on the topic development exercise when we meet Wednesday.

Taxonomy/Folksonomy

I wonder if the next generation will change this to “tagsonomy”. With the popularity (and almost, necessity of) social networking and social media, the tag is the most popular and easiest means of classifying and organizing ideas and information. As this technological age moves forward its interesting to see the difference in uses of tags, and how people will use this ability to organize and categorize information which will stay for the rest of digital history. As with all things, sadly, the improper or unfocused use of tags will highly dilute sensible and usable information. A fear i personally have regarding tags is the over saturation that will occur as sites merge together and aggravate results.

Hi Emira, your thought about plagiarism is completely right; I completely agree with you when you state that we are learning based upon other peoples phrases that have left either an impact or a learning experience. In fact, the notion of plagiarism must be clearly define in order to remove its ambiguity from everyone mind. As I said last time in class, I donā€™t think someone can claim a word or an idea as his own because we all learn from somebody and we are all inspired by someone. Thus, nowadays, our so called ownership of an article or an idea is merely the improvement of else body work. In word, I will say that plagiarism is the photocopy of another personā€™s work.

From watching the three videos, i have been exposed to things in a new light that i never really viewed as a problem. One thing that really bothered one of the author’s was that he liked to listen to people sing. When he said he liked to hear people sing that was him listening to pure good vocals with little to no touch-ups. Auto-tune was a technological advancement that upset people that were very strong-hearted about people singing and actually having the raw talent. On top of this, privacy laws were also changed do to airplane and helicopter flights, before due to laws planes could not fly directly over or extremely close to houses but this law was later changed for easier airplane flights, but people were upset with this law change because it gave them less privacy.
