paper blog post

As a non writer this is continually a difficult process, there is so much to read and digest, that must then be turned into something informative but not being “regurgitated”. I have made slow progress, this is a a very heavy writing term for me. Conveniently, searching for information and using libraries is nothing new for me, im quite sure its the only reason why i’m still surviving this class. Knocking out this paper and a passing grade in the class will allow me to de-stress , that is, until next semester starts. I like to think that a topic as dynamic as mines is helps because theres always something new going on. An example is a recent email facebook uses have been sent regarding policy.

Blog post 2

Using the downtime acquired due to the arrival of Super-storm Sandy, I tried my best to make up some old work and ensure that I’d make progress on my four research papers due very soon at the end of the year. I feel that progress is being made, I’m fighting off distractions, but this will still be a very tough time for me. Regarding the project for this class, I have found more sources, and did most of my annotated bibliography and will have that handed in for Thursday’s class. Restructuring my question has helped to find new sources, but not to much; I’ll still be looking for more.

HW 10 research blog post 1

The most difficult task i’ve come across with this project has really just been starting it. I’ve never really had an easy time getting ideas from my brain out to others, and more specifically, on to paper. I’m looking more and more to just brainstorm and get ideas out of my head and written down. This strategy hasnt brought any new success specifically, but its better than not having anything written out at all. What makes things like this difficult for me are that its an execution problem, not an understanding problem. I’ve a clear idea of the goals for the project, I just hope i can attain them.

Search engines

Im not sure how long ive been using digital information retrieval systems, but I do remember using computers eventually to look up books when the NYPL’s LEO system started up. The  Liddy article gave amazing insight as to how entered text is taken in, split apart, filtered and sent out, only to return with results in varying fashion. I didn’t take much away from the Berkley article on evaluating websites, because it only makes logical sense to take those things into consideration.

Taxonomy/Folksonomy

I wonder if the next generation will change this to “tagsonomy”. With the popularity (and almost, necessity of) social networking and social media, the tag is the most popular and easiest means of classifying and organizing ideas and information. As this technological age moves forward its interesting to see the difference in uses of tags, and how people will use this ability to organize and categorize information which will stay for the rest of digital history. As with all things, sadly, the improper or unfocused use of tags will highly dilute sensible and usable information. A fear i personally have regarding tags is the over saturation that will occur as sites merge together and aggravate results.

Plagiarism

Writings have arguably been the single most important means of sharing information since the dawn of humanity. As time has progressed and technology has changed the way we create, share, and store writings, we see how writing and creation of history can and has been abused. Generally, abuse comes in one of two forms, the blatant change in facts, what really happened, and plagiarism. While similar in being examples of falsified information, I see plagiarism as the worse offender because of the ability to affect the “now”. Writers take up insane amounts of time and energy to create or research or both; to conduct interviews and check facts. They do this with the intent of birthing a child piece of work and to have the identity of that work stolen, for use of personal gain, I think, is horrible.

Wikipedia and Social Media

I found the Common Craft video on social media to be a solid means of introducing and describing how social media works, why its necessary, and how it can be used to benefit all. At the same time, i appreciate Nicholson Baker’s article, which gives us insight as to the negatives of “freedom” and how something that’s meant to be useful and shared can be perverted into a platform for anarchy. Its a sad reflection of humanity in my opinion, and can be seen all across the world in other things. While freedom of speech is something i cherish and believe every human should have, there still is a point at which there needs to be a difference between using speech as a tool vs speech as a weapon. I’ve experienced with a business i’m close with, where people who were caught stealing went on yelp and flooded the business with negative reviews. How fair would that have been in scoopville, if people who just didnt like jarett said that his ice cream was nasty, when they’ve never had it? Wikipedia has evolved into a community of editors within the normal internet community to manage the information and keep some integrity, however, at the same time some of those people have gotten so caught up in themselves and their ability to determine what is “relevant”, that they’re suppressing the free flowing of information. I wonder if there will ever be a solution to the abuse that comes with both freedom, and power.

Homework 3 – Digital Media and its distribution

As an audio and video engineer, and also a producer,I’ve seen first hand the arguments presented by Radiohead and Elton.  It seems to me however that the fault still lays on the labels, specifically the major ones, whose abuses in the past have turned off many people to their necessity. Excessive markups and huge profits compared to the same artists who’ve brought them said money, is unfair, to say the least. I feel like this is something that can be worked on, like Elton said, if they so desire. Right now, they seem to have their nose in the air. The Pavlik reading brought an interesting idea to mind regarding a media guide. I’d like to see how that could happen but again it would seem to require cooperation by the video hosts themselves, the new record labels and tv studios if you will.

Research Strategies / HW 1

I’ve never been an amazing student, having falling out of love with reading and writing sometime around 6th grade. Interestingly enough, there have been occasions where I’ve submitted papers in 6 hours after I began them, and have gotten solid grades. Reading chapters 1 and 8 of Badke’s “Research Strategies” reminded of this; of times as a child in these places called “libraries”, an ancient lore. Surely I jest, as this class takes place and is labeled as a library class. As a member of “Generation Y”, the group which caused the technological boom of recent times, it’s interesting to see myself reading this book on my iPad and sharing my response digitally on a blog. It’s also interesting that I remember specific instances of me being a research glutton, as well as writing papers via a stack of notes, one main source, and as a quoter.  I question my academic future had I available a book like this one score ago, if I would even be at this school right now. I look to consider all of these techniques and create my own plan of attack, as my jack-of-all-trades personality allows, of not forces, me to do so
