Zines – Sabrina Martinez

I thought that the lecture on last Wednesday was interesting. I never knew or even heard of Zines until that class. It was kind of cool to see all the types of Zines people made and the different types of materials used to make a Zine.  I think that zines are a good idea for thank you gifts at a wedding or a birthday. It gave me an idea to create my own zine for a family function I will be having in 2013. I want to create a FAMILY TREE ZINE for my family. I know I would have to work hard getting all the pictures together but I am sure it would be a nice idea. I really liked the zine that was dedicated to Britney Spears, which was made by one of her fans. It just shows how one person can stand up for another without ever meeting them.

Homework # 4- Zine

From reading the 3 links, i have come to a conclusion that all zines are strictly made as a smaller “Mood Board”. Companies always liked to make zines even tho they bring back low profit and most people think its a waste of money. However if presented and showcased correctly a zine can do your campaign a great service but to have a decent zine, you have to look up good examples and really understand a zine’s purpose. In the creative thinking link that was posted i think the author said it best when he stated ” If we are interested in understanding the world, we need to ask serious questions about the institutions that teach us about that world.” That statement can also be related to zine’s in a way where, if someone wanted to make a zine that was worth making then they have to understand why and how a zine works and what people look for in a zine. That is the big difference in between making a Mood board and a real professional looking article that looks like its straight out of a newspaper.

Homework #4 Alternate press/Zines

There are many forms of press used in today’s times and some are removing others in the process. Some people enjoy reading the news, now since you can access the news straight from your computer at home a person no longer needs to leave their house to get information. With this can slowly decrees the amount of newspapers being distributed, but the online subscription would increase. The same goes for books as well because instead of carrying some heavy book they could just download a pdf straight to their Ipad or tablet and read on a light weight device.

For Zines I believe that they do have a place in this world of today. They are usually a small designed book with information about what ever the author feels is necessary and wants readers to read about. With zines being in mainstream circles people can get more of an audience to read them and can continue to pass the word around.

Reno A H.W. #4

Zines is great for people who like to express their creativity and explore other people thought and opinion. The topic can be about anything, there no limitation, no rules, it’s anything goes. Zines can be forming any format you want and people can’t criticize it. Zine is great way to see people with the same interest with musician, artist, or different kind of people and can interact with their topic. Zine is mostly like blogging in way where you can your ideas by writing or pictures. Zine does help bring new and creative ideas and help inspire new upcoming thinkers.

Homework#4

I had no idea zines existed. While reading Zines 101, I didnt find zines to be interesting. I thought of them as being blogs but on paper. Anyone can make one. They could write about anything. I couldn’t really picture what a zine is or what it looks like. I wasn’t able to make a connection of what a zine is. I deciede to google zines and i found the website http://wemakezines.ning.com/. I realize a zine is much more than a blog. Its more artistic. The drawings on some of the zines are amazing. There are so many different groups, zines for mental health, childern, and artistist. Im so interested now, im thinking of ordering one.

Your Zine can be anything you want it to be_HW4

Zine defined as a self published magazine, where typos, improper grammar,  simple unique ideas, any sort of topic, writing styles and so on can be found in these zine publications. Is a style in which we as individuals can publish our creativity, which could be a good thing because we can share same interest with others or even feel freely to express what is going through our minds. What I really liked about zine is that there is no “rules” where I don’t have to worry about my grammer checking, I myself tend to make mistakes. This is just a way of getting something off your chest kind of way, and helpful for the individuals who enjoy writing.

ZINES – Destiny Modeste

It’s interesting, while living on this earth for 17 years I never thought about where these objects we use for informative entertainment evolved from. They’ve just been handed or advertised to me, giving me no real interest to question it. The reading explained the different characteristics of zines and what we need to know in order to make one. Prior to the assigned reading I had already heard about zines but never payed much attention to them. Zines come from magazines, which explains the many similarities they have. Zines remind me of online blogs, being that they can “be about whatever subject its creator decides upon, or it may contain a variety of subjects and writing styles within the same issue”, according to “Zine 101-A Quick Guide to Zines.” Zines do not seem to be that relevant in these times because there are online blogs and sites in which there is free publication accessible to anyone who needs it, as previously discussed in Blog Post 2. These hard copies are quickly dying, being replaced by blogs, and authors of zines should probably find and online web space available to make their own.

Homework #4 – Charles Baculima-Castillo

In the readings of “Zine World, Zines 101 — A quick guide to zines” I’ve learned that Zines are self-published pieces of literature that are distributed locally. I’ve noticed that in the reading they say that Zines are personal pieces of literature, and the topic and the content varies from each creator of the Zine. I’ve concluded, that if someone were to use a Zine, they would have to do a thorough review on it to consider it a valid piece of information because some Zines may look rubbish, with a whole lot of grammar and literature mistakes and may have an amateur Mood Board appearance, while others may look great and professional, and even resemble other pieces of literature like Times Magazine, etc.

Homework #4, Zines

A self published zine is an inventive and time passing hobby that promotes creativity and, keeps one in tune with endless topics of interest. The word “zine” derives from the word “magazine” and as we understand today, magazines contain media information that are owned by large corporation companies. Many of the topics discussed in magazines contain subjects in favor of middle to, upper class people such as celebrities or politicians. It has limited world news and consumed of trivial events that take up space for other potentially important texts that could benefit society. As discussed by Thomas Elanal, “News can be told from a neutral objective perspective.” Zine’s give us the opportunity to talk about things that many well known magazines typically will not  discuss. It encourages one to be creative and has no rules or limitations to what it can or cannot be composed of. It is simply invented for the people who have the will and the passion in creating them. Zines have become a popular phenomenon to “aficionados” and, it has raised interest and curiosity on my behalf. They are not popular because not to many people know about them or what approach to have toward them. However, it does seem like a time passing hobby that can be fun and informative for both the author/publisher and reader.

this is a youtube video that I have come across on “zines” and how it differentiates from blogging.

Notes from today, and reading and blogging assigments for Wednesday, September 12

Today we discussed non-text media in digital and analog formats, in particular some of the advantages, disadvantages, and challenges presented by the ease of creation and distribution of digital media. We ran out of time before we could discuss a relevant and recent article about digital vs. analog in the film industry, Film Is Dead? Long Live Movies: How Digital Is Changing the Nature of Movies. Take a look if you like; in it, the differences in the technologies are explained, and different film critics voice their opinions about each medium and the issues in general.

On Wednesday, September 12, we’ll discuss alternative print and digital media. I have to go out of town, so please welcome our guest lecturers, my colleagues Professor Maura Smale of the Library department at City Tech and Professor Susan Thomas of the Library department at Long Island University. For Wednesday, please read the following:

Thomas Eland, Critical thinking, deviant knowledge and the alternative press
Fred Wright, The history and characteristics of zines, part I
Zine World, Zines 101 — A quick guide to zines
Write one 100-word reading response blog post.

Looking ahead to next week, remember that classes are cancelled on Monday, September 17 and Tuesday, September 18. The college and the library are OPEN.

Slides from today are available here.
