Summary of Project #4

Dumbo has the New York City’s highest concentration of technology. This place is a beautiful place. You can see a lot of old buildings there and more narrower streets that they had long time ago. You can find many things their. You can find the Brooklyn Bridge Park their. There’s also the merry go round where kids can go and ride on it. Dumbo has art galleries and boutiques, restaurants and cafes. There are super markets there as well but they are a pretty pricey. When you go to the park you can see the beautiful skyline above the city. You would see The Brooklyn Bridge on one side and the Manhattan Bridge on the other side. There is a water ferry that goes from the other side of the ocean to the other end of the ocean. The area that eventually became Dumbo often used to be referred to as the Bridges that I have mentioned earlier. The landmarks included almost the whole neighborhood in what it is called now is Dumbo Historic District. Overall this area is still known to so many people. A lot of people go their just so they can relax and enjoy the whole view and the calm environment especially during the summer time.

Project #5: Letter

Dear next year student,

Before you begin taking Prof. Rosen’s English composition class, I just want to give you a little advice. Most of the assignments in her class are centered around locations in Brooklyn, so it would be a good idea to familiarize yourself with the neighborhood surrounding CityTech. If you don’t live in Brooklyn, then I suggest exploring the area the give yourself a head start. If you already do live in Brooklyn and you are familiar with the area, then there’s a good chance that you won’t have much difficulty choosing a location. I don’t live in the Bronx, so finding and choosing locations for some of the projects wasn’t easy for me. Also, try not to wait until last minute to do your assignments. It can be very stressful waiting to do assignments a day or a few hours before the do date. It’s best to do all the assignments as soon as possible. You’ll complete them with better efficiency that way. And be sure to pay attention in class for potential glossary words. Those are important. Also, everyone in class will have to write a summary of one day in English class. When it’s your turn, make sure you pay extra attention in class so that you can keep a record of what goes on during that day. Well, that’s all the advice I have to give for Prof. Rosen’s class. Good luck.

Project #5: Research essay full summary

The research essay that I wrote is about the Brooklyn Academy of Music fire that took place on November 30, 1903. In the essay, I gave two accounts of the fire from two different newspaper companies. One of the accounts was from the Pittsburgh Press, and the other was from the New York Times. A quote from the New York Times article states that the fire “was one of the swiftest destructions that Brooklyn has ever known, the great auditorium being a seething sea of flame within twenty minutes
” At the end of the essay, I compared both of the accounts of the fire to each other. The Pittsburgh Press article gave less detail and a more general account of the fire. The New York Times article, however, did the opposite and gave more detail to the event. For example, the Pittsburgh Press article stated that the firemen were only successful in preventing the fire from spreading, but they weren’t successful in putting it out themselves. The New York Times article stated that the firemen “quickly dropped the fire hose and ran away.” Judging from both articles, it is clear that one newspaper did one research than the other.

Summary of Project 4

The Brooklyn Banks is a three block area under the Brooklyn Bridge. It consists of various ledges, stairs, rails and barriers. However what it is most known for is the sloped architecture that surrounds the entrance of the bridge on the Manhattan side. It is most popular among skaters to a point which John Branch, of The New York Times, calls it a “skate mecca”.  Brooklyn takes credit for developing skating in the east coast and giving it a broader perspective on what is possible. With much love from the “under-ground”, the city did not recognize this place as significant to anyone. In November of 2004, the city decided the Banks would look nicer if it were green and was a park. Many people were outraged, especially Steve Rodriguez, a Bank skater since 1983 and owner of 5boro skateboards. He disputed their decision to tear down the banks. In an interview by The New York Times, by Justin Porter, Rodriguez says “If you’re going to make some changes, you should work with the people who use the space.”  Rodriguez ended up saving the park from destruction but was then closed again in 2010 for bridge maintenance. This task is rumored to be completed sometime in 2014 but nothing is certain.

Advice to incoming student

Hello, to the next student sitting in this seat. You are not in high school anymore, stay focused on what is important and try your hardest not to slip up in the beginning because that is only going to make it that much harder for you to pass. This class is not only a mandatory class but also a way to better get to know your city. It’s a very fun class that teaches you how to efficiently soak up information from data bases and how to properly cite them in your work. You even get to take a good amount of trips out of class to the library, to tour Brooklyn, and a place called the Brooklyn Historical Society or BHS. A few suggestions from me would be that make sure you do your work on time and do not let anything get in the way of you doing your work. You also want to write down the work you have to do on your phone that way you will not forget and specific details of each assignment. With these similar classes your work guidelines for each assignment can get confusing. Also remember to keep track of when you are supposed to write a summary of the class because it will pass right by and you won’t know what to write or might not do it at all. From the day you get the glossary assignment make sure to complete that as soon as possible and get that out of the way so you can have a clearer mind on the more heavily weighted assignments. Overall if you stay on top of your work and ask questions you should not have a hard time passing the class. The teachers are not going to ask for anything impossible from you so don’t worry.

Summary of Projec#4

Fulton Street is named after a successful business man, Robert Fulton, who own a monopoly steam ferries business. And two streets linked with the ferries are called Fulton Street. Although the monopoly business did not exist now, the monopolistic businesses still continued on the Brooklyn Fulton. From the past century, there are plenty of retail stores along Fulton Street; it is a successful economic model to the local African Americans. However, Fulton Street recently moves to the next step. Because of its fantastic transportation, attracting thousands of visitors a day, Fulton is no longer a market place for local retailer, but also a mix market with both national chain stores and local retail stores. The joining of national stores attracts more visitors to Fulton mall, and also the fresh, new renovation make Fulton more international. On the other side, because of the national stores are too powerful and rich, many poor local stores are defeated by the high rent, and out of the market. Some people worried about the change of Fulton Street, but according a survey by Vicki Weiner, deputy director of the Pratt Center for Community Development, the construction of Fulton still function like traditional market place where people socialize as they shop.

A Wise Advice

As a freshmen coming into City tech, I was nervous but soon that nervousness turned into excitement when I got my syllabus of my ENG 1101 class. The reason for my excitement was when I saw all the things we were going to do where going to be fun because the class was going to work on a course that was fun and interesting. The course was called “Being in Brooklyn”. Now I was in Learning community which meant that my ENG 1101 and SPE 1130’s class work will over lap. This added to the fun even more and life easier. This ENG 1101 class will help us enhance you skills of writing long essay to short summaries and also reading. This class also helps you in doing your research more easily and also how to research in more credible ways. In this course called being in Brooklyn you guys will learn about the neighborhood of city tech and also learn a lot about rest of the Brooklyn. This course will cover some interesting sorties of past so be ready to learn some amusing facts. In this class we used one word almost everyday,”Location”. Since this course requires you to do a lot of research on various locations so be ready to be picking a good location on which you will have to do a speech and also write an essay.  This class also requires you to go on a few walking tours, some with class and some by yourself.  These walking tours make the class very interesting and fun so be ready for a lot of walking. This class might get little challenging but than if you have professors like Professor Steve Davis and Professor Jody Rose than you will be fine. They will help you anytime and in anyway possible. Another advice will be to ask them whenever you need help and also don’t leave your until the last day. It won’t be your best work since you won’t put our full effort to the work.

Advice to incoming student

To the incoming student:
Before talking about the class, I want to tell you an equation, college student is equal an adult. When you are a college student, people expect you are responsible and knowing what to do. Therefore, the excuse that you used in high school is not so useful at the college anymore. Grow up, guys.
As a freshman, I feel lucky I have this class. I live in Manhattan five years since I move in New York; and I never step out of my bubble. “Being in Brooklyn” really gives me a new vantage point of New York. You can learn more about the Downtown Brooklyn, the new environment, and learn how to give your school life more color. As a new student, you might have a problem that no friends from your old high school have the same class with you. Yes, this is the problem I have at the beginning of the class, but now, no more. Since you have same classmates in both Speech and English class, you can meet new friends, chatting with them at that 15 minutes break. When God makes time, it makes plenty of it, so use that time.
If you want me to rate this course, I think it will be nine out of ten. So where does that one point go? It probably the speech and the Open lab; personally, I do like speech, and I don’t like to use computer to do the daily homework, because the computer is always distract me. So if you cannot bear that temptation as I did, I suggest you to open another account on your computer, with icon of Microsoft word only. Do not miss any assignment, not matter how small percentage they are, it still have power to affect your grade at the end. More importantly, DO NOT ABSENCE, because more than four absences, you cannot take you final test; and you if fail your final test, congratulation, you have to take the same course again.
Hoping you enjoy this class, and gain a good grade.

Sincerely,
Student in fall 2013
