Happy and saddest place in NYC

New York City is a really big city with marvelous places! everyone have a happy place and a sad one. For me my happiest place in NYC is on the pier under the Brooklyn Brigde on the Manhattan side. This is my happy place because that’s where me and my girlfriend go to just relax and talk. We could be there for several hours and we wouldn’t notice, just talking, watching the boats pass the Hudson river, and sometimes walk around the mall.

I can’t recall any sad place for me to write about. But there is a place where I had a bad experience in a playground where I cracked my head open because I  ran down a wet slide and I slipped and fell. This occurred when I was just twelve years old so I got pretty scared, the playground  in the park which is like a block away from my house. So every time I pass through the park to go home  and I see that playground it gives me they flash back of what happened there. Many people have there own places they remember from either happy. Sad, scary etc it all up to the persons experience they had.

Summary assigment for 10/9/13

Today in class we had a double session of English. In the room of Prof. Davis class we first started with a speech a guy gave us about how is so important for you to register to vote. Even if you don’t vote the your registration still counts. After listening to him we answered the other side of the quiz that was from the reading “Who knows Brooklyn?”. Most of the group had trouble with question number seven which asked us what was the first battle of Brooklyn. Prof. Rosen allowed us to Google the information and we was able to answer it.  For our second session we went down to Prof. Rosen’s classroom and we formed in our groups again so we analyzed our groups drafts. She explain what was a juxtaposition which basically is to compare and contrast two things that are adjacent to each other and she also gave good examples to explain its meaning . This information made us understand more clearly what we had to do. She also changed the syllabus for our projects to be due this Wednesday which is the 16th.She also gave us a worksheet that we had to fill in while grading our classmates paper. There was 13 questions in total that we had to fill in so it can help our classmate do their final copy better. Is also important to mention that this Monday theirs no class but Tuesday we would follow a Monday schedule and we will be going to BHS.

9th avenue

From this map it seems that 9th and 10th avenue are always fairly busy. Like other readings, Saul only seems to like New York and nowhere else. He criticizes everywhere else and cannot get enough of New York. The funny thing is too that he is only referring to two blocks and comparing them to everywhere else. The map really emphasizes New York and the other locations on the map do not seem to be important. This is also evidence that he favors New York a lot. However, he places the Hudson River very close to Jersey on the map which is pretty inaccurate. The buildings and surroundings that are placed in the area of 9th and 10th avenue are correct. The map portrays that he only had knowledge of that area and that’s it. This map could be on some sort of New York magazine because of how much it shows the New York life is a great way of life. It is also opinion based and not everyone would prefer to live in New York which is why Saul is being biased as well.

View of the world from 9th Av

On the map it seems like Saul Steinberg’s wants to show that 9th & 10th Av are part of the busiest area in the metropolitan area. As from the image we can see a lot of people walking on the streets and also cars moving around the place. One interesting thing which is noticeable is how everything gets smaller and smaller as we move out of New york City. Why is that? May be because Saul Steinberg’s also thinks New York city is the best place to live in and considers other places less cherished and significant. Also, just by looking at the title I wondered that how can you view a scenery in your mind by comparing just 2 blocks with the rest of the world. Saul is criticizing the way people live in other places and only likes how people live in New York. It gives a better image of New york so probably that is why it was chosen to be the cover for the magazine. A think which also stood out to me was reading how the some parties used his cover picture for promoting their movie ” Moscow on the Hudson”. In conclusion, this map leaves us in a thought that is New york self centered? Yes or no? We don’t know.

English class 10/7/13 Summary

Today, in English class, we talked a little about what some of us wrote in our blog posts about our walk around Brooklyn on the 30th of September.  We discussed the definition of the word promenade. It means “to walk in a public place.” Also, we talked about how pictures and scenes can be viewed from different vantage points, or perspectives. Afterward, we asked questions and discussed the Glossary assignment in more detail. Prof. Rosen mentioned that there will not be any classes this Monday coming up on the 14th of October. However, there will be classes on Tuesday, but the classes will follow a Monday schedule. This means that all the classes that you would normally take on Monday will be done on that Tuesday, replacing the Tuesday classes. The due date for project #2 will be on Tuesday the 15th in the morning. On Wednesday the 9th we’ll be going over the drafts for our projects. At the end of class, we took a quiz in groups based on the reading assignment “”A Literary Visitor Strolls in from the Airport.”

View of the World from 9th Ave, 1976

“View of the World from 9th Ave” shows Saul Steinbergs view of how 9th ave looks like. From looking at the map it shows what he outlined. He outlined 9th ave, 10 ave, Hudson River, New Jersey, and the oceans. It shows how 9th and 10th ave the buildings, lots of cars, and loads of people walking. The other thing that shows is that Hudson River and New Jersey are right near eachother.  From looking at the title he means that if you stand in a location high up top then you can see how all all these area are near eachother. New Yorker magazine is with all the articles, essays, lots of interviews and etc. This should be part of the cover because this shows how New York is connected to everything.
