First walk in New York City

My first walk thru New York City was a pleasant one, If I recall correctly it was in the year 2005 and it was in Coney Island Brooklyn, it was also my first time in the U.S and the walk turned out to be pretty weird since I did not know where I was. Thankfully I was traveling with my cousin and she knew the area around there pretty well, but I was so lost at that time that I cannot remember the name of the places we went to or the stores that we visited. What I do remember is that we passed thru a park, the park itself was pretty big and it had tennis courts, basketball courts, and a football field. In my opinion this park is great since the place I live in does not have that many parks or fields in which kids can play in, these are the only things that I can remember from my first walk in New York City which in the end turned out to be a great experience that I will never forget.

My experience to the City

On a cold fall evening on November 28,2012 my brother, older cousin, and I went to go see the tree lighting at Rockefeller center because our uncle worked there and got us in the v.i.p section. We took the A train to 42nd street on 8th avenue and walked to 45th street on 5th avenue where we arrived at Rockefeller center. When we got there it was so crowded and there was no space to walk around or stand at. Nobody was allowed into the building only if you worked there or if you knew somebody that worked there. So when we arrived we called my uncle and he came and got us and took us into the building. We got lucky because my uncle worked right where the tree was, so we got to see the whole ceremony from standing inside rather than standing outside in the cold. Right under where he worked was the ground floor where the performers rooms was. So we went down to eat and then as we were sitting there the “Rockettes” came out the same time to go perform on stage and i was excited and went up to them and took a picture with them. It was really a exciting feeling because as soon as they came up I ran to go meet them and ask them if i can have a picture with them and when i did that their body guard hold me back and ask me what i wanted and i told him. Then he gave me the opportunity to meet them and take the picture. After that we saw the tree light up and went and took pictures with it. It was really a good experience to go see the tree for the first time and i recommend anyone to go see the tree this year its a fun experience.

English Class Summary 9/23/13

Yesterday in English class we went over our summaries of “City Limits” with our assigned groups. We then wrote  a summary for the reading together. If any of your groups were not able to finish you will be given time tomorrow at the beginning of class to do so. We were  given the hand out for project #2 and discussed it. Our homework is to read the article “A Literary Visitor Strolls in From the Airport” and write a summary about your experience walking in New York City. This will be due by Wednesday.

Grup D City Limits

In City Limits an excerpt from The Colossus of New York by Colson Whitehead, the author expresses his look on the city of New York. Whitehead uses various examples and interesting forms of diction to express his message to the audience. His important message was that every person living in New York builds their own private version of New York. He states that the first time you start building your private New York is the first time you lay eyes on it. He talks about his time when he first started building his own New York. He started building his own New York in the 1970′s which he looks at in a dirty way. He calls all of the “facts” stated on documentaries about New York, hokum. This shows how he feels that New York is misrepresented by outsiders.

the author later states “there are eight million naked cities in this naked city they dispute and disagree” this mean that each person has their own version of what New York City really is. It is up to us on how we want to see these changes, for example in the future like in 10 years people are going to see the Freedom Tower. But to everyone that was here before the tragedy, we are all going to see the Twin Towers and not the Freedom Tower. After a while buildings will change but they will always remember you as you remember them. Whiteheads main point of view is that you are a New Yorker when what was there before is more real and solid than what is here now.
