Discussions Week 2

These tea boxes and package designs were made by P.S Art Design studio in Ukraine. While looking for inspirations for my tea redesign, I came across this packaging design for this Matcha design tea set, which is used for many traditional  Japanese ceremonies. What caught me was how the design on each of the boxes was the clean and sharp execution on each design and how it succeeded in capturing the essence of Japanese art and watercolor as well as design. Nothing feels forced or jammed in but it feels modern while keeping the traditional japanese roots at the same time. I also love the font in which they decided to keep simple and readable as well.

Meet the artist

Hey guys. So my name is Matthew Rivera but y’all can call me Matt. It’s easier like that. I gotta say, I love comic books. Just a huge enthusiast for them overall, since I was little and will be until the day I die. I’m pretty sure I have an unhealthy obsession with spider-man and it’s because of my love for comics that I decided to stay in college overall and before the pandemic hit I used to love going to signings and meeting my favorite artists and writers. Among the favorites are Humberto Ramos, Babs Tarr, Sean Murphy(whom I have yet to Meet), John Romita Jr, and the Kubert brothers. I’m also a huge romantic and love coming of age movies. It doesn’t really take a lot to make me happy.

It might sound weird but I do enjoy doing Page Layouts, signs and logos. I feel like page layouts are pretty fun to do and honestly are underappreciated because who doesn’t love a pretty page? I’m getting back into illustration and I just want to better myself in regards to skill and become more versatile as a graphic designer and learn a bit of everything.

Discussion 1

Basically the writer’s suggestion in regards to keeping a sketchbook is that you have to find time for it, and to do it every day. All that time we spend doing other small things such as scrolling through our phones and doing nothing on the train when we commute could easily be better spent sketching and making our drawing skills better. Other suggestions are that it’s okay that our drawings don’t look perfect because at the end of the day they’re only sketches and we progress with them and whatever we finish with the time given to us is fine. In addition I like how Abrams mentions how it doesn’t matter what materials we use when sketching and that what we use doesn’t matter unless we understand the essentials and that the best practice is still life, which is among my favorite things to draw. I have kept a regular sketchbook before but in the past I eventually just stopped drawing it which is a shame..due to time or I just sketch on pieces of paper. In keeping mine I hope to use this sketchbook to see my progress as a designer/illustrator and to better myself in regards to drawing things and people in motion. In regards to the quote that Steven Reddy says, what I think it means is that when drawing still life and things of the sort, to focus on the then and now and just draw your heart out and to just focus and be in that moment in time so you can get everything.
