The concept for this illustration was a statement by Pope Francis where he supports same-sex unions from a recent 2019 interview. This statement caused strong reactions around the globe, from unqualified praise to vocal rejection. It also gives hope to members of the LGBT community who get radically excluded. The article I used called Pope Francis’ statement a “lifeline to LGBT Catholics,” which I interpeted by placing Pope Francis on top of a lifeguard chair. I did this because his statement gives LGBT people hope and a step towards acceptance, much like a lifeguard going into the water to save someone from drowning.
