For my editorial illustration about the impact of global warming on polar bears I decided to go with my concept of where the ice was floating in the water, which creates the illusion of the polar bear. For my color palette I kept it very monochromatic using the color blue. I used a dark blue for the line art and a variety of blues to color the background. I also included the white just to make sure it actually looked like ice. Overall I’m in love with the cold tone of this illustration and I’m very happy with what I came up with in this short amount of time. However, it still worries me that it might be too simple or maybe some people won’t get it. I think the perk of this illustration is that it makes you think and once you get it you’re locked on. I think the main vocal point of the illustration would be the very vague face of the bear in the middle. I think even though it’s very subtle it’s still just enough to understand and see the bear.
I debated on coloring in the face parts darker however, I believe that would’ve looked very odd and been a major distraction. Then again, maybe that would’ve helped the illustration in the long run.
All in all, I think this illustration was successful with the coldness really aiding the message of the illustration. I think the vocal point is there with the subtle face of the bear in the middle and even though I have doubts and probably could’ve done things differently, I still think this illustration works.
