Reflective Journal #12

I finally got my certificate for EARNING MY EARS! I got it kind of late considering how I got it here by January. I’ve had a “check-in” conversation with my executive manager about my experience. I told her how I feel disappointed about my experience here. I actually expected more from this. I don’t mind the laborious work of housekeeping, but I didn’t expect to be just housekeeping. I really wanted to take as much as I can from this experience. Then she saw my room board and looked at it shocked and asked if I’ve been having VIP section the whole time. I told her I did and then she gave it back to me. Finally when I started working again after the “talk”, my manager came up to me and told me my section would be given away. At first I thought it was because I was doing a bad job, but then she told me it was because our schedule manager wanted to train me on various other things too. Such as Amenities (People who takes in special calls and fix vacuums, stock in the warehouse, etc.), Houseperson (Who helps stock linens in the linen room, gives housekeepers ride, clear housekeeper’s cart), and Runners (Who are in charge of training new cast members, and takes in special calls from base). I can’t wait! I hope this last month here will be an enjoyable one!

Congratulations Fiona!!!! You’re just a few steps closer towards finishing your internship. It’s great that you were able to talk to your Executive Manager about not being able to work other aspects of housekeeping and that your manager was able to work something out for you. I had a friend who was doing housekeeping at the Contemporary and was in charge of the suites. She never got the chance to work on any thing else except for cleaning the rooms. She never spoke up and ask for oppurtunties in another department aside from hers. She came back in regret since she felt as if she didn’t gain enough experience. Hopefully you may recieve all the knowlegde you need before the end of the program to be able to talk about when you come back.

  2. Keep in mind that you and only you are in charge of your carreer development. You did the right thing by speaking up for yourself and requesting to have an enhanced experience. By speaking up you accomplish a number of things:
    1) you develop your communication skills
    2) you get a richer experience
    3) your leaders know what your goals are
    4) your leaders can help direct you to opportunities that will develop your career growth
    5) there are many other benefits, can anyone add to this list?

It was a good that you had that talk with your manager. Just make sure that if you plan on climbing up the ladder in Disney, you should talk to all your managers that maybe in charge of your area. They will pay more attention to your work that way.
