1- W 9/2: Introduction to Ways of Seeing: Adventures with Image and Text
Course Site Introduction		 Register for the OpenLab and join our course.
Introduce yourself on our site by adding a comment according to the guidelines posted there.
Read excerpt from “The Tool” in Wind, Sand and Stars by Antoine de Saint-Exupery and add a comment in response to the post on our site.
 
2- M 9/8: Introduction to Blogging and the Glossary
Project #1 assigned		 Set up your ePortfolio.
Write a comment in response to the homework post about avatars (instructions on our course site).
Read everyone’s comments, and comment on at least 2 classmates’ posts.
Read through the middle of p. 16 in Ways of Seeing by John Berger
3- W 9/10: Project #1 outline and brainstorm due
Writing workshop for Project #1		 Write a post reflecting on the process of receiving—and offering—critiques on Project #1.
Draft of Project #1 due online by Friday.
Read selection from Ways of Seeing by John Berger.
4- M 9/15:  What is a summary?
Handout: Writing a Summary		 Read “City Limits” by Colson Whitehead.Complete peer review for classmates’ drafts.
5- W 9/17: Discuss “City Limits” Revise Project #1.
Write a post summarizing “City Limits”; offer feedback on your classmates’ summaries via comments.
6- M 9/22: Project #1 due Project #2 assigned Field Trip to Center for Book ArtsWrite Project #1 ReflectionRead “The Way We Live Now: 11-11-01; Lost and Found” by Colson Whitehead.
Write a post considering Whitehead’s revision and your experience revising as you worked on Project #1.Begin work on Project #2

7- M 9/29: Project #2 brainstorming session
Discuss Steinberg’s map: Examine “View of the World from 9th Avenue” (and cover version) by Saul Steinberg.		 Write a post and comment on your classmates’ posts describing your chosen location for Project #2 and how to get there.
Add your chosen location to our map.
8- W 10/1: Continue reviewing summary, Project #2 brainstorm. Write a post about the BRIC field trip, and comment on your classmates’ posts.
Work on Project #2.
 
9- M 10/6:  Discussion on photography
Draft of Project #2 due electronically by the start of class		 Read “The Boston Photographs” by Nora Ephron, and then examine the related photographs. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]
Write a post considering the ethics of photographs in the media, bringing in any related examples.
10- W 10/8: Ursula Schwerin Library visit, A540: meet outside the library in the Atrium building
Annotated bibliography on photography.		 Read selection from On Photography by Susan Sontag and Camera Lucida by Roland Barthes.Write a post sharing what you learned in the library session, and include at least one question.
Reply to at least two questions from your classmates.
Follow up on Annotated Bibliography.

Mark up the text with your reactions and ideas to bring to class.
15-W 10/29: Project #4 brainstormDiscuss design aesthetics, “What If You Could Choose Between the Fastest Route and the Most Beautiful?” Read “The Happiest and Saddest Places in New York City, According to Twitter” by Ben MerchantWrite a post summarizing “What If You Could Choose Between the Fastest Route and the Most Beautiful” in one paragraph. In another paragraph in the same post, reflect on what your preferences would be for a route that is not the shortest.
 
16-M 11/3:  Brainstorming about your happiest and saddest places in New York.Discuss geolocation, happiness, and Twitter. Write a post condensing your thoughts about Project #4, getting as specific as possible; comment on your classmates’ posts.Read Jennifer Egan, “Reading Lucy” and selected Lucy Kolkin letters.Write a post about your happiest place in New York based on your in-class brainstorm.
