New journey,Better mentality

There are countless roads and paths to take to get to our destination, what matters when you get to point A to point B is the journey to get there. Alot of people are always pre-occupied and focused on the final point that they forget to enjoy what is right in front of them and miss the beauty of the out side world away from their perspective. the spirit around them, the experience to get to the final destination is the important thing that passes by everyone. I use to take the same route to city tech by rushing and try to get to my class as fast as possible because i was trying to control time by rushing passed me time would always be one step ahead of me, and controlling me instead. At the time i was in a very bad mental state because i would continuously become overwhelmed on how much it took to get from one point to the next instead of enjoy it.

that is when I was determined and understood the point of this project, it changed my mentality for the better, how I take a more fulfilling path every time i walk to my classes. The course I took would always be me running to the subway beside construction, pass the court and always worrying  that i am going to be late because I am in that mentality it usually ends up being true. my new route started with me not checking the time every 5 seconds and decided to let go and enjoy myself and the walk and once i finally reached jay street metro-tech subway station i decided to just wander at any direction and enjoy the view for what i have in front of me. If i don’t enjoy the journey there is no point of doing it and it has to come from personal experience. I was listening to my favorite music genre vaporwave that always seemed to calm me down while I felt overwelmed. during my walks I also decided to hear and enjoy every note of a song I did not know was there before  and that is because ive always been too pre-occupied with the journey. I walked through cadman plaza park passed city tech, checked if i still had time for class and I realized it was still early. I was pleasantly surprised that i had more time to enjoy and saw that everything is here for a reason and that is the beauty of the walk, nothing is going to get you and you’ll be able to take a breather and follow natures lead, you have to pace yourself if you wanted to get to your destination. the trees where right for the season, the space was open and free, the sound of the wind blowing and knowing where i am was breath taking. i walked around the park back to city tech and made it to my class, in a better mood, on time and had more energy then i did before. It improved my mentality in ways that i didn’t believe was possible. It was a good refresher and exactly what i needed.

I have found 2 outside sources that show that sometimes a good walk out of a line out of work give you a better perspective of the world and how it helps to let go of that object that you are always fixated on trying to get to. one is labeled “How Walking in Nature Changes the Brain”  By Gretchen Reynolds and in this article it explains how walks can help with anxiety, Depression and other mental illnesses because we spend too much indoors then outdoors, and how it can almost feel like a cage, to let go and go out is the beauty of having these wandering walks.  it can help make people find there way again, and figure out why they are doing what they are doing, its good thinking time when you take the walks according to Mr.Bratman “ we strongly suggest that getting out into natural environments could be an easy and almost immediate way to improve moods for city dwellers” in the article. So knowing that the other article explains all that we need to improve our lives very easily because of the time we spent wandering wherever we please.

Walking meditation By

Everyone is always chasing after something, many people don’t understand what they are looking for is right in there face, but that’s the way its suppose to be, no one ever knows what the next moment is, that’s what is so captivating about nature because things are suppose to be that way for a reason. people just have to take they’re time to figure out what they are chasing, what i figured out what im chasing is love.

A Million naked citys

Different experiences of New York leads to different perspectives, just because some one has seen something on a particular street and its not there anymore doesn’t make them entirely wrong. The city is always changing and with those changes comes different points of view or routines might change. Its almost as a string is connected to all of the past buildings that use to be there and it always leaves a little part of it self when it leaves. New buildings get made constantly and put under construction rapidly as the city grows as time passes and moves forward. My personal experiences for this city has changed me and made me grow as a person, the city’s not perfect but it is a place I’m use to compared to other states or countrys, I tend to have a bitter sweet feeling twords the city, as much as this place feels like home I cant say I want to live here forever. Sure the attractions and the fast paced lifestyle might be fascinating for some and I can definitely see the appeal, I don’t think I can live my whole life that way.

I’m not going to give you my whole life story on how I see New York or I can explain it a million different times but it will never convey how I truly see this place. I have gotten use to the speed and adjustment of the city on how it works. They’re will be places you love and places you hate, areas you think that will stay there forever in your mind subconsciously even when they disappear. I’ve lived in the city since I was born and have yet to see what it still has to offer but I tend to miss the simplicity of just living in a quiet neighborhood and having the ability to travel somewhere with my friends or family. Everything is so close together that the destination becomes more important then the journey to the destination. I tend to find a lot of the time that I focus more on where I’m going rather then where I am now. Most of the time I am going somewhere I think to myself “where am I going, How will I get there” my mind wants to rush and tell me to get there at an expected time rather then look around me and the changes of  how A place looked when I was younger or what store use to be there. One example is my journey to Barclays Center in Atlantic ave.

It was a rather cold day. I had originally had no plan or location to go to so I decided to just walk straight out of the atrium building exit and just went to where my legs took me. From all I could hear was the traffic passing by me on my left side, walking down Tillary St. As I walk pass McLaughlin park as i start wondering what might have been there before. Its very odd to think about it but to realize how old an area must be and how it holds so much history to it makes me start to realize what this project starts to be about. I then made a right turn down Flatbush ave. and saw that it was more of a fast pace neighborhood and thought how long it must have taken to make it such a place. Because it was so close to Manhattan people are moving both in and out and passing by fair amount of university’s on the way. being close to Manhattan the place must have been similar too it and as you go lower into Brooklyn you start to feel the authentic Brooklyn experience . To me it almost feels like I’m in Manhattan. Once I saw the tall building and the giant odd shaped center I made it to Barclays center and decided this is where my perspective should lie. the place was littered with the noise of cars and people trying to get passed one another on such a busy street. The bright light wrapped around the loop, it was almost like a Manhattan style building. It was festive and full of life then the last time I remembered of it. Brown old warn down residential buildings. It was a lot more dangerous back then it is now with the high crime rate. It was a more dead and un-lively place that always tend to frighten me while I passed by it when I was little. apparently during that time there was a protest opposing the development of said Barclays center for the fear of people losing their houses and businesses. leaving a both positive and negative outlook on the area that sums up my feelings about the city of New York. Just because people say its an improvement twords the area does not mean that people wanted to sacrifice their jobs or living space.

I chose Barclays center as my point of interest because I really find that this was the place I began to understand the message behind the project. I truly find this was the place I started to comprehend the message behind the task. That everybody’s version of New York is distinctive as a result of the experience they have in the city, they create this picture of their own particular perspective of the city one more unique to the last. One persons experience could be the complete opposite of another.I understood its sort of an fascinating thought blended in conclusion and basically demonstrates the people identity towards their feelings over the city. For example Colson Whitehead’s  “city limits” essay at one point explains in the third paragraph: “only skyscrapers visible from your stroller were the legs of adults” that even at an early age an idea of a personal New York can exist. one individual could love the clamor and happiness of the city and consider it to be a place for circumstance, others can be the opposite twords the city and think that its misrepresented and the city does not fit the cliche of what others think. I’m some where in the middle. As much as I enjoy living here there are things I do dislike about it. That is how I see my New York. How crime rate is climed significantly and much of the controversy tends to drive people over the edge, homelessness, addicts, ect. much I would enjoy changing.  Another perspective of New York and the difference between them is also in “City Limits” is a passage found in the second page “There are eight million naked cities in the naked city — they dispute and disagree. The New York City you live in is not my New York City;” further explaining that no ones version of the city is exactly the same and how the city overlaps with one another showing the juxtaposition of the buildings that use to belong there. They may be similar but never the same. The ideas can argue with each other of what New York is really about and to appreciate that we are here and be grateful before our versions of New York change, the city is always having new buildings and tearing down others. That we should not take things for granted.

The city is always changing whether the residents want it or not it is going to happen, as much as I love the city I also dislike a lot of its features, which is why I cannot see my future in staying in here. my perspective of New York has changed over the years I’m sure but I do not feel like my feelings twords the city will change in the future, in a way it is my first home. Not perfect but a place that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

Why I chose Barclays center

I chose Barclays center as my point of interest for my project #3 because I really find that this was the place I began to understand the message behind the project. That everyone’s version of New York is different because of the experience they have in the city they create this image of their own specific version of the city one more different to the last. One persons experience could be the complete opposite of another.I believe its kind of an unique idea mixed in opinion and pretty much shows the persons personality towards their emotions over the city. For example Colson Whitehead’s  “city limits” essay at one point explains in the third paragraph: “only skyscrapers visible from your stroller were the legs of adults” that even at an early age an idea of a personal New York can exist. one person could love the loudness and festiveness of the city and see it as a place for opportunity, others are bitter twords the city and believe that its overrated and the city does not fit the cliche of what others think. I’m some where in the middle. As much as I enjoy living here there are things I do dislike about it. That is how I see my New York. Another perspective of New York and the difference between them is also in “City Limits” is a passage found in the second page “There are eight million naked cities in the naked city — they dispute and disagree. The ideas can argue with each other of what New York is really about and to appreciate that we are here and be grateful before our versions of New York change, the city is always having new buildings and tearing down others. That we should not take things for granted.

different eras, different places

It was a rather cold day but I decided that I needed to finish this project. I decided not to do any research because I believed that it would ruin the point of the project or rather the experience of it. I then made a right turn down Flatbush ave. and saw that it was more of a fast pace neighborhood and thought how long it must have taken to make it such a place. because it was so close to Manhattan people are moving both in and out and passing by fair amount of university’s on the way. being close to Manhattan the place must have been similar too it and as you go lower into Brooklyn you start to see the authentic Brooklyn look. City Limits summery

“City Limits” by Colson Whitehead is an essay about the his first experience in New York City and what makes it so fast paced or why it is called “the city that never sleeps” because it seems to be functioning 24/7 even in the early 70’s  New york had its glory days not only that but draws in the reader by saying that everyone has their own personal version or interpretation of the city. First impressions are always the one that people remember and to understand this from the perspective of the writer is the general point of the essay. He even pints out at one point that never let people tell you how New York City was, and to experience it themselves. Because of the city fast paced nature everything is changing, stores, buildings, houses, ect. and how in the future all of it will be something else in a couple of years, to appreciate what we have now before its gone. and being a citizen in new york you understand where Colson is coming from if you where born and raised here. I agree with Colson’s perspective on the city and how people should appreciate what they have more often before it’s gone.

Palsied, Palsy

palsy (adjective) – a condition that is marked by uncontrollable tremor and quivering of the body or one or more of its parts not used technically

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/palsy

I came across this word in the “city limits” essay by Colison Whitehead in the first page of the last paragraph “… as the train erupted from the tunnel on the way to 125th street and palsied up onto the elevated tracks…”

when I first came across this word nothing came to mind, I have heard the word before but never understood it’s meaning and context clues helped me understand a little bit but not to understand it fully. I decided to look it up instead of determining context clues for the full definition. I do have a sense of clarity for the word now as just a vague understanding to it.

How monuments should be critiqued: Project #2

Monuments hold up so much importance in today world, there is so much controversy surrounding the statues and the history built around them. Many just claim to want to tear down the monuments rather then put them up on a Museum because of the person’s actions in the pass before they became known to the world and others say that it laid the foundation of the world we live in today. the events of Charlottesville have impacted the country in a way where tensions have risen. Mayor Bill Deblasio has stated the monuments being a “symbols of hate” and would like to build guidelines on how a monument should be critiqued. His criteria for evaluating these said monuments is crucial for the fate of all monuments in New York City. I believe if the person should truly has a good history and send a message to mankind to evolve our civilization in the best possible manner. The mayor should take in consideration both sides to determine the state of the statues in the future.

The tearing down of monuments is not new to history. Many have been taken down whether it be the end of a dictatorship or the people unhappy with what the monument symbolizes or what it was originally men to be shown as a historical achievement. one-way Mayor Bill Deblasio should critique monuments is if they have any oppressive, racist, morally wrong history to them. They convey that the monuments of terrible people should stay up. one example I can give is the famous memorial of Thomas Jefferson. Early years he was seen as a historical figure who has brought wisdom and help lead the foundation of America but now that we have the convenience of the internet we can find more background information on him. He has been known now for being a horrible slave owner who would not only own and abuse his slave but use to kill the dogs of the slaves because of his hostility towards dogs. It should be known that if a monument used to show or become some sort of oppressive symbol throughout the years their monument should be taken into consideration of being torn down.

The message behind a monument should be one of that to show that humanity is stepping into the right direction. in some cases, it may be a message to remember those who have passed away over a tragedy or send of message of hope and resilience maybe of one person who has made a huge step or rebellion like the Taino rebel Enrique. who stopped Christopher from eradicating his race from history. the events that Enrique caused was a symbol for people who they think have lost it all. their families and friends and to show that we as a group must fight against the oppression and to rise above to show that we as people can overcome and move forward. I for one would enjoy a monument dedicated to Enrique in New York. a monument that sends a message of positivity should be what people want to see. not one that conveys a negative message and be glorified over the tragic events that the person is responsible for, that is when people start getting agitated and start riots or fights. a message that everyone can get along to.

If a monument is causing controversy and unhappiness towards a majority of people it should be ether taken down or moved to a new location where people who do enjoy what the monument symbolizes so both sides can get what they want. After the events of Charlottesville people from both sides on whether it should stay up or be torn down has gotten really violent. Mayor Bill Deblasio should take into consideration of both sides and see what he can make up of the situation. This keeps both party’s happy, stopping the controversy by not making it a public monument by moving it to a library or Museum. That way if people did wish to see the said monument they could visit their local location that shows research of said person for all their accomplishments and short comings. this would also be an ideal situation to keep everyone safe.

Monuments should be remembered for the accomplishments of mankind rather than a memory of negativity and hate. The ones that should be displayed publicly are ones that send a good message for people from all around the world rather than one that might be used to cause discomfort to some. Mayor Bill Deblasio should use some criteria that will benefit not only one but both sides to ensure the safety of his people and the future for other monuments.

  3. someones personal opinions

Project 2 : part 2 summery

For our article I Picked the St. James Cathedral Basilica because of its beauty and its history as a building and as a monument near our college. The St. James Cathedral Basilica was made by the people of the city made in 1822. this boroughs first bishop  John Loughlin decided to make a new building of worship, made for the 70 diocese as thanks for the support the original building in long island had received, and decided to make this one in Brooklyn. Now of course during this time our college was not around to witness this event happen but it still remained a pleasant sight from it. The death of Saint James was the third to be calmed dead along side Saint Peter, and Saint Patrick in New York City. After his death the Dioceses decided to support the newest one being built. one of the first people to support the newest building was Peter Turner and had this to say:

“In the first place, we want our children instructed in the principles of Holy Religion, we want more convenience in hearing the Word of God ourselves. In fact, we want a Church, a Pastor, and a place of Interment.”

another reason why I chose this article was to send a message. When things are looking down and when times seem rough people will pull through for each other and  help one another for their friends and family, and use the negative energy into something positive.
