Project 4 Part 2

When I am on my way to school in the morning the easiest and fastest way is to take the F train and get off at Willoughby street but on my way home later the York Street Station entrance is the path where there is less people and I can look at the the Manhattan Bridge on Sands Street after I pass the Voorhees Building and then as I continue to walk towards the Brooklyn Queens Expressway there is the “YES” murals. One is designed in black and white paint and then across the street is the one that we have for our class Openlab background.

Conjecture

Conjecture (Noun)- a proposition before it has been proved or disapproved.

“The city’s emotional divide has remained mostly one of conjecture: we know the people are typically happier in Central Park than they are in Penn Station, obviously”. The Happiest and Saddest Places in New York City, According to Twitter- Brian Merchant

I encountered the word from today’s reading while in class. The word can be used in many ways but in this sentence it is used as a guess or theory accumulated from information collected from Tweets.

Forged Warehouse

Even though the address hasn’t changed and the facade is the same, occupation in the forged warehouse present day in DUMBO that was once a job and a storage building is now turned into a co-op, in Brooklyn Heights. Shares a progressive quality with the evolution of down under the Manhattan Bridge overpass. The first time I encountered this overlap was when I took a walk around the area in between a classes.

First I walked to Tillary Street and walked up to Cadman Plaza E walking past the US post office and the U.S Bankruptcy Court-East District of NY. Walt Whitman Park and the nice green turf where the Brooklyn war memorial is located along the path. You will then see the Brooklyn Bridge and continue walking to up Washington Street and make a left onto Front Street. Then you can continue to walk up straight about 3 blocks until you get to Old Fulton street. The Eagle Warehouse and Storage Company is across the street from Julian’s pizza and Grimaldi’s pizza. It’s on 28 Old Fulton Street where the location was originally home to the newspaper The Brooklyn Daily Eagle edited by Walt Whitman, a journalist and poet.

Its similar too many warehouse’s built in late 1800s, they were transformed by new technology in 1900s and are still historic buildings of NYC. From 1841 to 1955 was the year the Brooklyn Daily Eagle was open. It was after a few years it was designated as an official landmark by New York City’s Landmark Preservation Commission. That’s according to $1.5M Brooklyn Heights Triplex in Landmarked Eagle Warehouse Gets a Modern Update by Stephanie Hoina from City Realty. The industrial architecture that overlooks the designated location on old Fulton Street, which stayed preserved over its existing years deserved to evolve into a huge place to live and rent space just like the other landmarks in Dumbo or the Brooklyn heights area.

The Eagle Warehouse & Storage Company later purchased it and in 1980 it was converted to unit co-ops. Similar to where they transformed many old buildings into expensive condominiums remaking and taking from the art and persevering of old Dumbo. The interface is now that the printing machines, the offices and the enormous storage space or its employees that come and go to work everyday no longer occupy the building. Its no longer there its now big residences that people live in .Those living there see their home and interior decorations, while its still a big storage warehouse just its now the new eagle building with homeowners walking in and out of the building to go to work or go for a walk. According to the reading by Colon Whitehead in “City Limits” from The Colossus of New York on page 2 in the fourth paragraph his example inserts the idea of a new connotation for the warehouse, which creates an interface. “The man who just paid for a trip to Jamaica sees none of that, sees his romantic getaway, his family vacation, what this little shop on this little street has granted him”(Whitehead). I choose that as the example because Whitehead introduces his reasoning on what people used to see when they were in their old neighborhood, what once remained there versus what they see now has disappeared but its structure is still there.

I picked this landmark as my juxtaposition because of its effect that it has on Old Fulton Street. The tourist or someone strolling by the warehouse can look at the building and stop to read the plaque of Walt Whitman on the side where it says Eagle on the arch of the entrance and the plaque of The Eagle Warehouse is alongside it. I believe those plaques seem to represent the essence of the landmark and without them you wouldn’t recognize the warehouse as The Brooklyn Eagle newspaper or a huge building for private homes. Imagine if you were driving by it, it wouldn’t make you take a second look because your eyes seen a warehouse and you read the words Eagle Warehouse & Storage CO. According to Charles McGrath in the reading a Literary Visitor Strolls in From the Airport Will Self believes while driving in a car can limit the experience of travel in the City streets. “What recommended it was that it would take him through parts of the city that most people never notice while driving in a car: and experience that Mr. Self, a student of psycho-geography, believes has imposed a “widescreen-based virtuality ” on travel, cutting us off from experiencing our own topography.” Where in some situations it can because we usually are in the passenger seat or the backseat on the phone or with our head facing another direction for a second and missed a street or a store. Even while an individual is driving their attention is focused on the road and not off road as much. In some cases when looking for directions the map app gives the option of transit, walking, or drive. It includes the fastest route and the route with the tolls or avoiding highways all together. Of course walking usually has the lengthiest time and may not be the safest way to get to the destination but the scenery that you encounter taking that walk can be amazing. Many overlaps have been created in Dumbo and they fit in this area creating their own city within a little city.

Warehouse Juxaposition

The walk started when I was looking for a monument that is being removed or should be removed for controversy. But this isn’t a building that had repairs on the outside or a new name to show it and according to google maps it doesn’t have a pinpoint. The path I took put me in-front of the US post office and the U.S Bankruptcy Court-East District of NY. You will then see Walt Whitman park and continue to Columbia Hts. Then you walk down towards Old Fulton Street and the building is on Front st. It is across the street from Julian’s pizza and Grimaldi’s pizza. Now you are in dumbo. What made me choose this as a juxtaposition was a conversation with my cousin. Him and I were listening to Jay-z lyrics from his new album and he referred to dumbo as a opportunity to an investment that he missed out on. Before when a place in dumbo was worth 2 it’s now worth 25 million. The building is now a full service coop. The interface is now that the building no longer is occupied by the press or its employees walking in and out, there are now residents walking in and out with a doorman at there service. My juxtaposition is located on 28 Old Fulton Street. The Eagle Warehouse is now renovated condominiums but the facade is the same as its original. So it looks like a vacant warehouse that used to be The Brooklyn Daily Eagle.

Facade

Facade (Noun): The front of a building; also :any face of a building given special architectural treatment.

Example: The facade wasn’t obvious at night for the band to see so they were late to their performance at the school of music and art.

I stumbled across the word from the text on the third page, second paragraph of Walk with me by David L. Ulin. “I was looking for somewhere to eat, but all I encountered were shopping centers, no visual cues to orient myself, just facade after facade of what looked like the same chains.” I thought of the last line to that sentence and imagined looking at chains of stores lined up next to each other and I figured the meaning of the word identified the front designs of the stores. I further understand the word now because every store I pass usually has a facade. Which can be a landmark to the eye.

Facsimile

Facsimile(Noun): An exact copy

“The Statue of Liberty has never made me feel at home, either in New York Harbor or on Las Vegas Boulevard, where it stood squat and compressed as I drove past, a facsimile in incremental scale.”

I first seen this word in the text Walk with me by David L. Ulin in the second paragraph. I didn’t understand the word and it was my first time seeing it.

Example: A facsimile was reproduced by the team to keep the original trophy in the showcase.

Nematodes

Nematodes (Noun) : Any of a phylum of elongated cylindrical worms parasitic in animals or plants or free living in soil or water.

” This is the ultimate polis, through which humans move like nematodes” – Charles McGrath

I assumed it was a science related word because McGrath used it to describe movement in humans. I encountered the word in the reading from A Literary Visitor Strolls In From the Airport by Charles McGrath on the fourth page in the first paragraph.

Controversial Criteria

Monuments essentially represent a leader or a historic event that was significant to their time period. Centuries have past or they’re sometimes deceased when they’re finally recognized for what that represented or wrongfully acquired. This is why we argue if their monument or statue should be removed. Those who feel insulted have the right to speak out but not deface or dismantle the monument. Those who honor the statue have the privileges to praise but if their way is offensive, it must be put to a halt.
Righteous monuments have impacts on cities and states where both sides fall out in racial or nationality disputes. Just like in the years 1861 to 1865 when the North and South brutalized each other because of the differences between the free and slave states of the nation. Later starting the beginning of an indivisible country. Nationality can emerge an intense controversial argument because there are a variety of races, cultures, and ethnicities. Those that belong to different groups follow a different accordance. Whether they share beliefs with the monument or the statue his or herself. Those fortunate to live in an upper social class or in an area of a specific nationality believe in different rights that better them but often infringe others. Where as those who aren’t as fortunate may need the assistance of others. This is why if the statue is offensive to a nationality or a race it should be removed after the right approval so there are no legal actions necessary to be taken.
Should an individuals beliefs and practices reconfigure or spoil others for their own justification or does it take an entire organization to get the point across.
According to Huron Daily Tribune, Justice Moore put the monument in the rotunda of the courthouse in the middle of the night two summers ago. “He was sued by several lawyers who said the monument infringed on their religious freedoms”. I agree with the last sentence from the excerpt because freedom can be taken for granted and be portrayed as a different idea. For example the lawyers who sued used the ability to take Moore to court instead of violent actions. For the convenience of the chief, the middle of the night was in his best interest but it contradicts with the principles. If the statue is intimidating or unlawful to an individual or group it shall be removed through official criteria for the state. It should be approval from a senate member or state legislature that then sends for proper removal or replacement of the statue. This person would be labeled as the overseer for their state on monuments. In Baltimore they removed statues of Robert E Lee and Thomas J Stonewall Jackson in the middle of the night after the violent weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia. “The former Baltimore mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced the creation of a special commission to review all of Baltimore’s Confederate statues and historical assets in June 2015.” I agree with the former mayor on reviewing all confederate statues and the other states that removed or relocated their confederate monuments after considering intensity in Virginia. For people whom suffered and were killed in battle or in sacrifice for their liberty, their monuments are placed to hold eternal value. They should not be affected, defaced or removed from its original site. However, if over time their legacy has changed because of truths that were told or political views weren’t obvious the statue should be reviewed. The history that makes the statue or monument significant is usually the reason for the controversy. But no actions can be taken unless approval from state. Symbols of hate, and leaders of hateful, and racial groups are direct causes for monuments being vandalized across the country. According to CNN, “Protesters gathered Monday around the Confederate Soldiers Monument at the old courthouse in Durham as one person climbed a ladder and tied a rope to the top of the statue while the crowd chanted, “We are the revolution”(Jackson). The protestors began to celebrate on live video how the felt when the statue of the nonspecific confederate soldier was brought down. I acknowledge Christopher Columbus and his monument in the city and what his conquest resulted in.
In a 2017 NY Times article, “ If you disagree with what Christopher Columbus symbolizes, you have the right to do that,” the governor added. “Don’t march in the parade. Go outside and hold a sign, God bless you. But no one, no one has the right to attack or deny our celebration or our pride of our great heritage.” I support what the governor said because that is the free will we have. Doing what you feel or want and think is right to do. According to NY Daily News Mayor de Blasio gathered a team of censors for the statues on city land that indicates racism. I agree with Blasio’s idea of reviewing statues before just removing because that shows consideration to everybody but to further pursue the removal of the statue they should consider using a state representatives approval and a faculty to store the monument. Causing less controversy in the state.

Unheralded

Unheralded:(adj) Occurring without advance notice; unexpected

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/unheralded

I encountered the word in the New York times magazine, The Way We Live Now:11-11-01; Lost and Found.”There are unheralded tipping points, a certain number of times that we will unlock the front door of an apartment.”(Whitehead) The sentence before this gives a context clue because it says “no idea” which relates to the word unaware or unexpected. Thats how I found a better understanding for the word.

The horse pulled an unheralded stop during the horseback riding
