Homework #9

After reading the article How a Search Engine Works i was surprised to see how many steps it Ā actually takes to create a search engine. Yahoo, Google and Bing which are just some of the search engines out there make everything so easy for us. Especially now when they track the things we search and give us search results that they believe is what we are looking for. Although sometimes we still spend long hours trying to find what we are really looking for, for the most part they are pretty spot on with the results they give us. But the result you get on the internet are not always and in detail as the ones in the books.

While reading Badke I gained a bettwr understanding about databases and search engines. Ā The most important thing I learned is when searching for research remember to be precise on what your using to search. Ā The more detail you are with what you search the better the answers. Ā Badke gives an example of “rock” the term rock could be a solid object but also be used in the sense of rocking a chair. Ā Being general in a search would make your life harder in finiding the perfect information needed for your research. Ā Badke also provided websites that are great databases but given that the cuny library also has a great collection of databases for almost every type of research I find it better.

HW#9

I found the article, How a Search Engine Works, interesting. I had no idea how steps it take to formality a search. A Google search takes only seconds. Now, Google search engine is kind of a mind reader. For example, if I want to search for ear ache, by time I am done typing ear, Google already provided me with a drop list of the most common search for ear. On the list there is, ear ache, ear dysfunction, or ear infection. Ā How can a process, which is broken down into four segments, then each segments has steps, be done so quickly?

Research Method on Internet

In the articleā€ Database Search with Keywords and Hierarchiesā€, Badke discusses the methods of research on internet. In fact, the author tries to make folk be aware about the errors that must avoid in order getting exactly what we search for. I myself really enjoyed reading this article because I learned a lot from this reading. For instance, I was doing research last semester; because I did not know how to search on the web, I was force to randomly go through so many libraries to find what I needed. Thank to Badkeā€™s book which provide several websites for research Iā€™m sure that I wonā€™t spend much time to find basic information I need for my research project.

Complexity Behind Search Engines – Destiny Modeste

While readings Liddy’s “How a Search Emgine Works”Ā  I learned alot about the complexity behind search engines. I knew it was a lot of work because I had spoken to an employee of Google before and she had somewhat explained how it worked. Ā Search engines always give us the easiest and more simple answers when we searched something and I always felt it left with a lot more work to do opposed to helping me out (in terms of doing more work lol). I do appreciate the great amount of work that goes behind creating a search engine and I understand that I too, have to put in more work in searching through all those pages to find more information that will better my papers or what ever I’m looking up in the long run.

Blog Post 9 – Ahmad Woods

Would it sound crazy if I said search engines controls the internet? Maybe the word “controls” sounds a bit strong nearly implying that search engines are a collective internetĀ IlluminatiĀ of sorts. However search engines do hold a large amount of power because it ultimately decides what we eventually click on. Why do you think corporations pay top dollar to have their web pages featured in Google’s first page search? I mean that has a lot to do with the fact that people normally do not look pass the first page but yeah.

The process behind searching through a search engine is rather intricate but the article explaining it excluded page ranks which is a big part of it all.

Homework_9 Database

While reading chapter 3 of Badke’s book I finally found the answer in how to do a better research while using certain databases. We all might use google, library databases and etc to find information for our research papers and may find our selves going through many given results until we find the right one. That is as Badke explained we type for example ” interact ” and we get many results that include the word interact. His insights were very helpful, to make sure we use the right keyword(s) to find the “better ” and close result to what we might be looking for.

Homework #9 ā€“ Charles Baculima-Castillo

The first reaction I had when I read Liddy’s article about search engines was that I was mind blown. I had an idea that how a search engine works would be complicated but I had no idea that there were so many steps revolving around this process. One aspect that I greatly wanted to touch on was the “stop words”. Stop words is a step that pretty much eliminates and negates common words like “the” and “is”. This step is really important because without this, someone can have a much harder time to search what they really want because these words would cause interference.

homework #9 search engine liddy

After reading the article on Liddy’s “How a Search Engine Works” I always noticed a similarity in searches and how they somehow linked to my preferences. At first I did not pay much attention to it, but now I realize how a search engine refines’s exactly what your looking for based on key terms or how something is typed into the search engine. at times, searches are on point and sometimes they are difficult to find. Now I realize it may be important to improve searches by shortening what your looking for to have a more refined search that can directly lead you to what your looking for. an “Inverted file isolates and metatags subdocument pieces.” This helps information link together for a better outcome.
