Finding Your Way (Scavenger Hunt)

CityTech campus is a place of many obvious activities and processes, but many important aspects of the building and much of the College’s programs, culture, issues, politics and ‘personality’ remain invisible to visitors and, often, even to the population of students, instructors and staff.

Visit both the Atrium in the Namm Building and the Academic building. Your goal is to scout out the perfect location for your pop-up exhibit. You are also trying to determine areas within both of these buildings that can be used to promote your exhibit and lead visitors to the exhibit. The design of your pieces should take the actual spaces and physical qualities of the buildings as well as existing wayfinding graphics, into consideration.

Just like when we were at the museum, please search for and document as many of the following items as you can, with your camera.

Put together and present a slide show of all the images you collect:

  1. Part I: Wayfinding Systems Photograph at least 6 images in each building that document parts of the college’s Signage and Way finding systems – these are design elements that help to orients visitors to the site and navigate where they can go. This include:
    • Directional signs
    • Maps
    • Large scale type
    • Digital displays or kiosks
    • Floorplans
    • Floor or wall graphics (with directional signs)
    • Information related to departments
    • Information related to events, announcements and other college programing
    • Cafeteria, Bookstore and Bathroom signs
    • Elevator and escalator signage
    • Accessibility and related directional signs
    • Aspects of the signage that relate to the college’s branding
  • Part II: Exhibition Display possibilities Photograph at least 6 images that relate to where you think your exhibit could go
    • Observe the size of the rooms and doorways. Note the scale in relation to your artwork.
    • Lighting – note how the rooms are lit. Is there natural light? Spotlights? Recessed lighting?
    • Note the flow of traffic. Be aware of rush areas and safety hazards (fire escapes).
  • Part III: Exhibition promotional possibilities Photograph at least 6 images that relate to where you think materials could go to promote your
    • Observe the size of the rooms and doorways. Note the scale in relation to your artwork.
    • Lighting – note how the rooms are lit. Is there natural light? Spotlights? Recessed lighting?
    • Note the flow of traffic. Be aware of rush areas spots and safety hazards (fire escapes).
    • Look for areas where you can naturally attract your audiences’ attention.
  • Note: You will need photographs of your environment that can later be used to show your graphics in space, so try to take well lit, high resolution photos.
