Week 8 Weekly Assignment (Thurs. March 25th)

Your assignment for this week, has two parts:

1. Find a Mentor Article! This is the article that you are going to use as an effective model for writing your own article. Look around at different print sources and choose a style that you feel would be a good match for your audience and purpose. You do not have to copy the style of writing, but you can turn to it for tips on style, word choice, tone, structure, and so on.

2. Summarize, paraphrase, select quotes from your 4 sources to answer your research questions. Start with your questions, figure out whether the key information you want comes in the form of a quote, a paraphrased section or a summary of the main idea of the piece. Try to synthesize as much information as you can from the sources to begin to get answers to your questions!

Mentor article:https://reelrundown.com/misc/5-Factors-that-Can-Cause-Toxic-Fandom-to-Arise I have chosen this article as my mentor article because not only are they pretty similar, I also like the style in which it is formatted. How the writer made bullet points for all of their points, then went on to go into deep detail on each and every point.

    Research questions:
    1. Why the toxicity comes out so severely during big bouts
    2. Why does it seem like they are fueled by racism
    3. What the good of us in the community can do to combat this hate
4.Why do they wait until the community is excited or angry to be hateful
5.Is this a community worth saving

1.And I’m fans of khabib gaethje and Connor. They’re fun to watch.
Weirdos pick sides and hate and share in the glory of victory or some sh*t. (CheifWiggum) This shows how fans get too into the action and why they take it so personally.
2.“Conor McGregor` is the posterchild for toxic Masculinity”(Aubrey Hansen) Cnor,wh is one of the biggest fighters on the planet, once mocked a Muslim fighter by intentionally offering him whiskey, which is forbidden in Islam. His fans wasted no time mocking and adding fuel to that fire.
3.”Khabib is my favorite fighter but that’s kind of where it ends. I don’t know him personally and he doesn’t know that I even exist, no point going thread to thread defending him But I could definitely see anybody who he fights getting spammed with hundreds of thousands messages from Muslim people worldwide basically saying “something something smesh”. So I can see where that gets annoying.(Sherdog)
4.”Most fight fans don’t have much going for them so they attach themselves to fighters on a personal level and take every fight as if it was actually them stepping in that Octagon.”(Sherdog)
    5. “I am beyond thankful for every moment that I have whether it’s good or bad. I am grateful for the support and even more for the critical assholes that seem to just have nothing better to do but to be a menace. Thank you UFC.”(Jesse Holland)

    Mentor Article : https://www.sc.edu/uofsc/posts/2020/04/alicia_ribar_covid19_impact.php#.YGO-0NKSk2w
This is my model article strictly because of the style of the writing, not so much the actual writing. I want to write in a similar style each section has a question as a heading, then in the little paragraph the question is answered.
1- ” While many studies have looked at the effects of the grief none have done so through the lens of vicarious trauma caused by exposure to a patients traumatic experience.” (Haskett)
2″ Honestly.. at the minute I hate being a nurse I hate the feeling of being unsafe/ exposed at work. Even more so I am petrified to having my husband and children cuddle me in fear I’m infecting them I’ve cried every shift” (Pearce)
3 ” I’m not really worried about catching the coronavirus at least not from my patients or collogues. Everything at MD Anderson is set up in a structured way we have much protective gear.” (Spacek)
4 ” I think about my former co worker who moved to New York years ago. She had been taking care of Covid 19 positive patients in the ICU. After she tested positive she was quarantined and found dead in her apartment. ” (Levine)

    My mentor article: https://www.heart.org/en/news/2019/02/20/why-are-black-women-at-such-high-risk-of-dying-from-pregnancy-complications
This is my mentor article because somehow it is not too different of many other articles but it attracted my attention due to the fact that they had to use some black females celebrities names to raise more effectively awareness around the subject.
    1) “Racism affects so many things before the patient even gets to the clinical encounter,” she said. “Both implicit bias and structural racism affect how women are cared for in the health care system.”
    2) Langer said. “Basically, black women are undervalued. They are not monitored as carefully as white women are. When they do present with symptoms, they are often dismissed.”
3)We have the means to identify and close gaps in the care they receive,” she added. While not all of the deaths can be prevented, “we can and should do more said Dr. Anne Schuchat, principal deputy director of the C.D.C.”
4)The inequities for women of color increase by age and are not affected by education levels or location, according to the CDC.

  4. Hamely Jose Taveras

Mentor Article: “Understanding Discourse Community” by Dan Melzer. I like the structure because it is very informative and it’s like a question-and-answer type of article that also has his opinion.

    By Kelley Hollard

In this article, Hollard explains how students are being shut out of the sport because of the money expense. There was that family that had to pay 18,115 dollars just to cover those money expenses. Mentor Article: “Understanding Discourse Communities” by Dan Melzer
I chose this article as my mentor article because I like the format and the writing style of it.

    1. What are the risks of having mandatory overtime for nurses?
“Worthington notes that abnormally extended periods working in a healthcare environment may cause nurses to exceed the safe limits for exposure to a variety of things, including ergonomic stressors and chemical agents.” (Stasik)

    2. Can mandatory overtime cause sleep deprivation?
“Nurses working extended hours (12 or more hours in a 24-hour period, or more than 40 hours per week) may be less likely than the general population to have an adequate amount of quality sleep.” (Eanes)

    3. Can mandatory overtime cause nurses to experience job dissatisfaction?
“Furthermore, nurses working shifts of ten hours or longer were up to two and a half times more likely than nurses working shorter shifts to experience burnout and job dissatisfaction and to intend to leave the job.” (Stimpfel, Sloane, Aiken)

    4. What health issues can mandatory overtime lead to?
“Several studies report long work hours are associated with increased fatigue, poor mood, poor recovery from work, and reduced perceived health.” (Caruso)

  6. Elma Kastrat

Mentor article “Understanding Discourse Communities” by Dan Melzer. I chose this article because I like the structure of it. It is like an article which answers specific questions but at the same time it is like an opinion article.

    Research Questions:
    1. Why are customers so rude to cashiers?
    2. Should people appreciate their work or judge them?
    3. Did they have problems and get sick because of coronavirus?
    4. Did they get better benefiting or more hours?
    5. Is there any cashier that left the job because of coronavirus?
    6. What did they experience in the beginning of coronavirus and now?
    7. What do they do to help customers?

    1. , 2. “Our View: Cashiers Shouldn’t Have to Put up with Rude Behavior” by MetroWest Daily News is about cashiers and problems they faced at the beginning of the coronavirus with customers and what they were forced to do.
-“While many grocery chains have given employees a bonus for working in a risky environment, these workers did not sign up for a job where they’re criticized for simply following company policy. An even bigger problem is not just the words that come out the mouths of some customers, but their reactions. It’s insulting, uncivil, and in some cases criminal.”
-”Two outrageous cases come to mind. There was the woman in Leicester who on March 27 sprayed Lysol in a Walmart cashier’s eyes after being informed that there was a limit on the product. Also, this week a man at an H-E-B supermarket near Austin, Texas, allegedly threw a steak and a bag of lettuce at a cashier.”

    3. 4. 5. Making an interview with a bookkeeper at my store (SuperFresh Market) I was able to find answers on these questions and understand the situation in which we have been for more than one year. She told me that there were a couple people who got sick because of coronavirus but it’s good that they recovered it without big consequences. She told me also that in the beginning of coronavirus they gave cashiers longer shifts and more hours because they had a lot of work to do in the store and they needed workers. They kept doing that for more than two months, but later when things started to slow down and when they got back their supplies with groceries and cleaning stuff they cut hours and gave cashiers back their regular hours. In addition, she told me that there were a lot of people who got scared of coronavirus and who got worried for their lives. They left work and it was very hard to find new people who would work because a lot of people were scared.

    6. “Grocery Workers Are Beginning to Die of Coronavirus” by Abha Bhattarai
-“One of the biggest mistakes supermarkets made early on was not allowing employees to wear masks and gloves the way they wanted to,” he said. “They’re starting to become proactive now, but it’s still going to be much tougher to hire hundreds of thousands of new workers. We’re going to start seeing people say, ‘I’ll just stay unemployed instead of risking my life for a temporary job.’ ”
-”In Maryland, Leilani Jordan, 27, a greeter at Giant’s Campus Way South store in Largo, died last week. “She said, ‘Mommy, I’m going to work because no one else is going to help the senior citizens get their groceries,’ ” her mother, Zenobia Shepherd, told The Post. “She only stopped going to work when she could no longer breathe.””
-Today everything is different. All stores are fully equipped with all stuff to protect their employees and all stores require their employees to use masks.

    7. “Supermarket cashiers have become critical employees amid coronavirus pandemic” from YouTube, by Andre Malok, NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
The video is about Lady Brandy who’s a cashier at a supermarket and what it looks like working at the supermarket during coronavirus. She told us that her job it’s not easy but it’s really nice. Helping people and working for them benefits our lives and gets us a better picture of the world. Although there are people who don’t appreciate cashiers work Lady Brandy tells us how she tries to help them and sanitize everything so that she can protect them at least for a little bit of coronavirus.

    Mentor Article: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/12/opinion/f-35-fighter-jet-cost.html
I like the style and how they present facts and knowledge of the F-35 Strike Fighter as well as the title of the article which makes you wonder why.

    Research Questions:
1.How Reliable is the Pratt and Whitney engines?
    2.How good is Boeings Reputation?
3.Is Boeing covering up their own issues?
4.How much does it cost to maintain a Boeing Jet?
5.Can Boeing live up to its Promises?

    1. “For nearly a century, Pratt & Whitney has occupied an important spot at the center of the U.S. aircraft industry. As well as having huge contracts with civilian airlines, it has for decades supplied engines to the military, including those used in World War II.”

2.”Last year, United Technologies, of which Pratt & Whitney was a part, merged with Raytheon. By revenue, Pratt & Whitney is the second-largest division at the new Raytheon, bringing in $16.8 billion of sales, accounting for nearly 30 percent of the total.”

3.”After investigating that episode, the N.T.S.B. placed blame on Pratt & Whitney, saying that one of its inspectors lacked the training needed to catch signs of a faulty blade, resulting in a blade with a crack being returned to service where it eventually fractured.”

4.”The 777 includes 3 million parts that come from 500 suppliers around the world. Boeing uses three suppliers for the 777-200ER’s two engines: General Electric (GE); Pratt & Whitney, a subsidiary of United Technologies (UTX); and London-listed Rolls Royce. The 777-300ER uses two GE engines each of which develops 115,540 pounds of thrust.”

But the agreement stops short of saying that this caused either crash — or even that the FAA would have done anything differently if the pilots had disclosed the information.”

  9. Hanting Hu

    Mentor article: https://www.cityandstateny.com/articles/policy/energy-environment/new-yorks-4-biggest-environmental-threats.html
I choose this piece because the author points out the problems directly, explains why it causes four key sustainability issues related to climate change.
1-“We have three times the rate of entrance into Woodhull Hospital for asthma than the rest of the city of New York … adding that the area also bore the brunt of the city’s sanitation.” say Reynoso
2-“The central design involves 50-70 Southside residents who have asthma and are involved in El Puente’s Asthma Self-Help Groups. ”
3-” Waste managers offer a variety of front load, rear load, and open top dumpster containers to help you manage waste at your commercial facility. Depending on the size and materials of your waste stream, dumpster rental companies can recommend the most efficient size and style of container.”
4-“The association found that more than 40 percent of Americans live in areas with unhealthy air. New York ranked tenth worst in the country for smog levels.”

  10. Tenzin Namgyal

Mentor Article: “Understanding Discourse Communities” by Dan Melzer. I chose this article because I like the authors style of writing. It answers questions but it also states the authors opinions which I want to also include into my own writing.

    Research Questions:
    1. What causes players to be so hostile and toxic?
    2. Why are women a big target for the toxicity in the gaming community?
    3. Is the toxicity fueled by factors other than just the game such as gender, race or sexuality?
    4. What can be done to lessen the amount of toxicity in the gaming community?
    5. Is it even possible to stop this culture of toxicity in the gaming community?

    1. “In one of the strongest sections of the book, he relates how Blizzard’s competitive team shooter, Overwatch, began with a relatively positive community whose levels of toxicity dramatically increased after the addition of its competitive mode. As he explains, Competitive Play is absolutely is’ absolutely designed in a manner that ensures toxicity as an inevitable by-product because it is based on a system where players are boiled down to their net worth'(37).” This shows how when things get competitive it causes people to become hostile/toxic.
    2. “However, men dominated the social dynamics in online video games, especially in competitive genres. The players’ hostility toward women is seen as a part of the homosocial experiences of online video gaming for male players, and a reflection of the aggressive content and context.” This shows that since men dominate the social dynamics in online video games they feel as if its ok to be hostile and toxic towards women.
    3. “Players harass one another for not performing well… Racist, sexist and homophobic language is rampant; aggressors often threaten violence or urge a player to commit suicide; and from time to time, the vitriol spills beyond the confines of the game.” This shows when playing competitive video games players will use anything to trigger other players teammate or not.
    4. To make gaming a less toxic experience some games like League of legends have installed a chat filter so players can’t say inappropriate things and verbally assault others. This shows that there a steps that can be taken to lessen the amount of toxicity in the gaming community.
    5. “But it turned out that these trolls produced only about 5% of the toxicity in League of Legends. ‘The vast majority was from the average person just having a bad day’ says Lin. They behaved well for the most part, but lashed out on rare occasions. That meant that even if Riot banned all the most toxic players, it might not have a big impact. To reduce the bad behavior that most players experienced, the company would have to change how players act.” This shows how that majority of the time players are toxic just because of things going on in the outside world not factors directly caused by playing video games and the only way to stop this would be to change how players act.

Mentor Article: “Understanding Discourse Community” by Dan Melzer is my mentor article. The reason behind this is because this was the first article I read that opened up knowledge and passion for the discourse community I am in today. It is very informative and understanding of many communities.

What are some dangers of sneaker releases?

As I read in the article about the employee shot in Chicago I learned that the sneaker releases aren’t always safe due to an angry customer. “Chicago police said the shooter got into a verbal argument with a 22-year-old man inside the Foot Locker store around 1 p.m. The suspect then pulled out a handgun and shot the 22-year-old man several times.” goes to show how scary it can be. The last thing the employee thought was going to happen was being shot.

    Are sneaker raffles effective?

“In a move to combat bots, Nike Inc. this week unveiled a new online system that will be linked to its in-store sneaker launch events.” This definitely helps customers have a fair chance at getting shoes since it isn’t easy for bots to enter the shoe.

  12. Pedro Flores

The Mentor article I chose is “Rare sneakers. Bots. Insider connection. This scandal has it all.” By Ronald D. White
    https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2021-03-22/nike-sneaker-reseller-scandal
is my mentor article because I like the way the author structure this article. I also like how the author added pictures so his audience can get a better understanding of what he is talking about.

Why are people not getting sneakers through the app/in-store?
“The story, which appeared online Feb. 25, detailed how Hebert acquired sneakers using bots to make bids for him, including on Nike Inc’s SNKRS app where the company launches new products.” This tells us why not a lot of resellers are not getting the shoes they want.
Who has an advantage in getting the sneakers?
“Now, a scandal involving a Nike executive and her reseller son is roiling the sneaker world, highlighting worst suspicions about a booming market in which shoes can be traded like stocks. For serious sneaker collectors, this is more than a tempest in a shoebox.” This show is that these celebrities kids have the opportunity to get the latest sneakers but take advantage of it.

  13. Christina Bethelmy

Mentor Article: “Importance of Online Discourse Communities” by Kristofer Brozio
I chose this piece as my mentor article to create an understanding with how my discourse community relates to a wide variety or diverse opinions and members that can take part in it.
Can each member in your group have the same exact goal as you?
“The goals of a discourse community are commonly assumed to be definitive, as they are shared by all the members.”
Can you change the way you want your group to be viewed or does it have to always stay the same? “The communication between the discourse members evolves itself each day, continuously defining and redefining the discourse goals.”
Is it normal to experience a negative impact on your business, etc. in your discourse community? “It is assumed that the quality of discussions takes a negative course in the discourse communities, when the participants are anonymous. “
Can we have an anonymous blog or review? “
“it has been seen that anonymity in a discourse community may lead to mob behavior by an otherwise normal group of participants”

  14. Arlene Perez

In my mentor article, “How to Read like a Writer” by Mike Bunn a tip that I learned is that implementing extra details in my writing can help the reader understand better the piece. This also helped me as a reader understand why authors do not get straight to the point and their use of added information in their writing. The purpose of the article was to explain “how and why you might read like a writer” and I think this helped me understand it better. The genre for the article was informative and was similar to the tone I tried to use in my piece.
