Location Choice

The location I chose is the Brooklyn Bridge. Its just a few blocks away from City Tech. Its very beautiful and taking a walk on the bridge would be a dream come true. I always heard how Brooklyn Bridge is really a place to go and see and when I found out my college is next to it I was really excited. It was opened for use on May 24, 1883 and is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. That’s what I find fascinating about it. The view of the East River and The Statue of Liberty also makes it want to go there.

“You start building your private New York the first time you lay eyes on it”. I chose this quote because even though I was born here there are many places in New York that I have not seen yet and many places are still a dream come true. Brooklyn Bridge was one of it and when I saw it made me happy and to think how beautiful New York is.

“Maybe we become New Yorkers the day we realize that New York will go on without us”. I chose this quote because when we come to New York it takes time getting around and knowing it well. As time passes by many things change. The day you see that even without you New York will go on is the day you are a New Yorker because you know how the city is changing day by day.

Location

The location i chose is the Federal building and post office that is a cross the street from the bookstore entrance of the city tech building.  I noticed it not too long ago when I went to buy books for class and saw a style that was of a time passed. There are also two parts to the building, one is the original and the other is the expansion. The original has more detail on the face of it with arches, towers and engraving. The newer section is more focused on functionality and has less of the style found on the old. also being across from a technical based collage and a court building covered in glass and steel seemed to fit well the idea of old and new. This was the main juxtaposition that I saw there. the following 52 photos were taken at various locations, heights and times to show case the entire building and the surrounding area.

It is also the site of the Brooklyn Theater Fire on December 5, 1876 where 278 to 300 people died. There is sing or memorial at the location and few would even know about it. We can not see the past but it is there, where a court and post office now stand a play would go on into the night.

Location Choice

My location choice is the Brooklyn War Memorial. It’s one of the Cadman Plaza parks. Here are the directions to get their:  When you get out of the college from the Namm Building, You head north on Jay Street towards Tillary Street. Then turn left onto Tillary Street. Then turn right onto Cadman Plaza W.Then turn right at Clark Street. Then turn left and then finally you will reach your destination.

This monument is dedicated to the ones who died serving the during the war. The memorial was meant to be a larger plan to show this area of Brooklyn, which included the Brooklyn Civic Center building, new municipal facilities, and expanding housing opportunities.

The Quote’s I’m using from City Limits are:

  • ” Maybe we become New Yorkers the day we realize that New York will go on without us.”
  • “History books and public television documentaries are always trying to tell you all sorts of “facts” about New York.”

I chose these quotes because they relate to my location choice. The second quote really relates to this because this monument is history. These are the people who helped out during the World War II. It shows interesting facts about New York City. The first quote it basically says how no matter where we are in the worl…New York City will never change. It will remain the way it is. This relates to the Brooklyn War Memorial because even though the people who died during the war New York still kept on going. it didn’t stop because of them. So for their honor, this monument was built.

Homework Sept. 30

IMG_4763[1]  Brooklyn War Memorial, Two Statues on each side. In the center the inscription reads “THIS MEMORIAL DEDICATED TO THE HEROIC MEN AND WOMEN OF THE BOROUGH OF BROOKLYN WHO FOUGHT FOR LIBERTY IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1941-1945 AND ESPECIALLY TO THOSE WHO SUFFERED AND DIED MAY THEIR SACRIFICE INSPIRE FUTURE GENERATIONS AND LEAD TO UNIVERSAL PEACE.” Steps and field of grass and trees surround this memorial.

The location i chose for project 2 is Brooklyn War Memorial, located in Cadman Plaza Park. I will use this location to depict the juxtaposition of celebrated and forgotten. The walking process from City Tech is simple. Begin at the entrance to the Namm building of City Tech. Make your way to the corner of Johnson street then make right and walk along Tech Place. Once you’ve reached that corner turn right onto Cadman street and walk about 450 feet until you get to the corner. Then make a left onto Tillary street and walk 50 feet. Cross the street and enter Cadman Plaza Park and make your way to the center of the park where you will see the main attraction of the park and that is the Brooklyn War Memorial.

Colson Whitehead states in City Limits “They are a part of the city we carry around”. This relates to my juxtaposition of celebrated and forgotten because at one point my location was celebrated and looked up as something huge for the city. As the years went by it wasn’t celebrated as much but whatever person that witnessed this memorial and spent time analyzing what it represent would surely carry this part of the city with them. Now a days you don’t really see people celebrating this memorial as much as when it was once celebrated. At times when you’re at this location, you still witness some people admiring it and others just bluntly ignoring it. This is where the celebrated and forgotten comes in play because although it’s still standing not everyone celebrates it or forgets it.

Whitehead also states “Seek ourselves in this city each time we reminisce about what was there fifteen, ten, forty years ago, because all our old places are proof that we were here.” This relates to my location because this memorial was dedicated 62 years ago in 1951. Some people who once celebrated this memorial can probably still seek themselves in this monument because they were present at one point which is proof that they were a part of this city. Others who probably weren’t present when this monument was a big deal probably don’t reminisce as much as other people would because although they might have seen it in the past, they don’t care about it as much. This is what brings out the celebrated and forgotten.

9/30 Homework

The location I chose for my second project is called Dumbo. The name of this location comes from the acronym “District Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass”. On September 25th, I decided to take a well needed walk around my campus. I started by walking out of Namm Hall and started walking up Jay Street. I walked bass Tillary St and continued walking. Along the way, I saw the entrance to the Midway Building and as I continued walked I arrived in front of the Voorhees Building. Around this general area is where the Manhattan Bridge starts. I walked under the beginning of the bridge then walked under an overpass. The next thing I know, I was standing in from of a guide map that explained the area in which I just entered. It was Dumbo and it looked very interesting. It was a modern area where modern building architecture clashed with Old Brooklyn architecture. I would go more in depth but I’ll save that for the essay!

“You start building your private New York the first time you lay eyes on it”. – The Colossus of New York by Colson Whitehead
Even though I’ve been building my private New York since I arrived here back in ’00, I’ve still to explore thousands of areas around it!
Dumbo proves my case because I’ve never been to such area before. Usually, I’m use to being around houses and apt buildings but living right next to a bridge and the ocean water is something entirely new to me. This quote will be reflected in my writing in the sense that I’ll be describing some of the features that make Dumbo entirely new to me and how small windows of past Brooklyn accent the modern parts.

“Yet, as I came to understand the place where mentoring, criticism , and producing overlapped, I moved into the sphere more gracefully than I’d ever imagined”.- Fort Greene Dreams by Nelson George.
Dumbo is a mixture of a residential and commercial area. It has bars, clothing stores, an art gallery, a bank, event areas and other small stores. You can do a lot of activities in this area so it would come to no surprise that a lot of age groups over lap in this area. In my essay, I’ll be writing how this location has changed from a manufacturing district to a habitable area.
