Be open minded

To whom it may concern,

Being the this class made me look at Brooklyn totally different. Before I came to this college I thought the college was located in Manhattan. I hadn’t made too much research on my college I just knew I was accepted and that was it. When I found out it was located in Brooklyn , I didn’t like it at first. I had a bad image of Brooklyn, I thought it was a bad city. When my professor Rosen told me we had to walk around the college and see a place that interested us that was near the college, I didn’t like the idea at first. I was used to coming out of college and going straight home. But as soon as I started walking around I started to notice the city was beautiful, i was looking at a totally different image of Brooklyn, like the unknown part of Brooklyn . I never imagine viewing this city the way I was looking at it for the first time. It had its nice view of the east river, I could see the tall and colorful buildings. I saw people eating outside of the restaurants I enjoying the view the city had to offer us. Like the saying goes “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” I learned that wit his city of Brooklyn. And after they told us to go visit the place where we choose to talk about in our persuasive speech , I didn’t have a clue where the Brooklyn bridge was. I had a friend that had to guide me towards the bridge. That shows I was really new to the city. My friend told me it was easy to walk towards the bridge but I still wasn’t sure on how to get there. So he walked me there, when I got there I was amazed on seeing such a breathtaking view. I hadn’t imagine seeing the bridge, the way I seeing it was. It showed me I need to explore the world more. My advice to any student sitting in my seat next year is, be opened minded, give this city a I chance to inspire you in your life. That’s what I learned in this opportunity that was given to me.

Summary of The Visions of the Brooklyn bridge

The Brooklyn bridge was and still is a historical landmark, that many don’t appreciate it. Many don’t know the usefulness that bridge is to both cities New York and Manhattan . It made it easier for people to go across the east river. Before the bridge was built , they only could get across by taking the ferry, and even there sometimes there was no space. And when it snowed , it was impossible most of the time to use the boat. The east river would freeze , but not solid enough to walk across. They were many ways of looking at the new bridge that was constructed. The Bridge gave many people visions on how the bridge could of been useful to themselves. One of those who had their own vision of the Brooklyn bridge was the biggest showman in the 19th century P.T Barnum who wanted to use the bridge to promote his business and also display how safe the Brooklyn bridge is. Washington Roebling son of John Roebling also had different visions of the bridge. His vision was to make it easier for people to get across from one city to the other. Although both had different visions ,They wanted the bridge to be a success.

Letter to Future Student

Dear future student, the learning community is great for freshman. I found that the course was much easier and helpful than my other classes since it is designed for new students. Especially since Professor davis and Professor Rosen are so helpful to the class. In the Being in Brooklyn course you will learn many new skills to improve your writing. It was also helpful for me spending one on one time with Professor Rosen going over my work for improvement, which i suggest you do. The course focuses on Brooklyn. The readings and essays you will be writing are all about Brooklyn, so if you are not from here you will become really familiar with Brooklyn. I also learned a lot in speech class about how to give an organized speech which will be very useful to you throughout college and later on in life. If You are a shy person like i am you will not be comfortable at first but that changes over time. Do not stress over this like i did, which effected my grade in a negative way. Especially since professor Davis is a really friendly and tries to make you feel comfortable. During the semester we took two trips to the Brooklyn Historical Society. We learned many things and had access to Brooklyn history. On our way there we had a walking tour which was a great way for us to learn about the neighborhood. Especially for those of us who are not from Brooklyn. My advice to you is to take advantage of the opportunities these two courses offer. The two trips to the Brooklyn Historical Society are a great experience and you should attend them. Also, speech class offers you a chance to come out of your shell and loose the fear of speaking in front of large groups of people. This was the number one improvement i have made since coming to college because of speech class. I hope that you enjoy these two classes and have a positive experience like i did.

The curse of the Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the most famous bridges worldwide. It opened in 1883, connecting from Brooklyn to Manhattan. John Augustus Roebling designed the bridge, but after an accident that resulted in Roebling’s death, it was continued by his son Washington Roebling. Ever since this death, a series of other deaths have accured on the Brooklyn Bridge. One being the Brooklyn Bridge stampede on May 30, 1883. Rumors began to spread that the Bridge was about to collapse which resulted in people running in fear and trampling others. A legendary showman named P.T Barnum offered to walk his circus elephants weighing approximately 42 tons across the brooklyn bridge to prove the Brooklyn bridge was not a danger. Over the years many have attempted to jump off the Brooklyn Bridge, some succeeding and others failing. Robert Odlum, a swimming instructor was the first person to jump the Brooklyn Bridge on May 19, 1885. Although Odlum survived the fall, a few hours later he was reported dead due to internal bleeding. According to Odlum’s friends, he did it for fame and money. Following this incident many also tried to do the same, Larry Donovan was the first to succefully jump off the Brooklyn Bridge and survive the jump. The Brooklyn Bridge has a history with interesting stories that have resulted in tragic accidents.

Letter to future students

Dear future learning community students, my name is gerald Palmieri and if you are lucky enough to be a part of these duel wielded classes them pay attention. I learned a lot in my English and speech classes. Having good professors helped but also the new matieral is very useful in life. I really enjoyed my speech class because it helped me overcome a fear of speaking in front of people confidently. You will be learning a lot including the different types of speeches like persuasive and informative. English class was also very interesting to me because of how I learned a lot about the history of Brooklyn. You will read many types of stories, explore their meanings and their authors and why they wrote them. One of my favorite stories was about the music and culture of fort greene park back in the day. I am not a Brooklyn native and after learning more about the area I was really intrigued and intend to learn and visit more. Both these classes coexist as many assignments you will do in one class will carry over to your other class and will be similar. My advice would be to find a place you really enjoy around the area because many projects that you will be doing will revolve around memorable places in brooklyn around city tech. All in all the learning community program was a success because of all I’ve learned and I made some pretty great friends too.

Letter-Advice for students

Dear upcoming students,

What comes to mind when you see the title Being in Brooklyn? Maybe it means how life is in Brooklyn or maybe looking deeply in Brooklyn right? Since our college is in Brooklyn it doesn’t mean you know everything about it, but after taking these two classes you will feel you were raised here and you know every single thing about it. In these two classes Effective Speaking (Professor Davis) and English 1101 ( Professor Rosen) you will be seeing new sites that you never saw or knew about in Brooklyn and learning so many new things about Brooklyn. I myself didn’t know that much but now I can tell Brooklyn is a more enjoyable borough then Queens. You will also get to know your fellow classmates since both classes are combined classes. You will learn a lot about places like The Brooklyn Bridge, Dumbo, Columbus park, Brooklyn Historical Society etc.  The professors also take you on a walking tour around City Tech which was really fun because I got to see many new things and landmarks I never saw before. The work that you would do like essays and summaries are posted here on Open Lab so there cant be any excuse that your ink ran out. Just kidding its better posting it here then wasting paper. I would recommend that you guys should do your work and not procrastinate a lot because it will be a burden on you since you we have 5 projects to complete in English class. In Effective Speaking you will be doing a few speeches and your fear of talking in front of a class will be gone because its the same students in both classes and hopefully you all will be friends with each other. The professors are great and you will have a great time with them. If you are having a problem you can contact them and they will help you out with something. Well I hope you guys have a good time in these classes.

Advice for future students

The title of the class says it all. get ready to know brooklyn. Being in Brooklyn is a great class to start off your college carrer with. Since it is a learning community it is easier to understand and do the work. There is a lot of projects to do but of course you need to know how to manage your time so you can get them all done. In Being in Brooklyn you get to do a lot of site seeing and really explore brooklyn and find out things you may have not know existed and it really interested me becasue I’ved lived in brooklyn all my life and was still introduced to new thinggs which made the class that much more interesting. You get to go on a wonderful tour of  BHS or the Brooklyn Historical Society, and gain acess into its vast collection of knowledge it has about brooklyn dating back to the 1700’s.  Effective Speaking and English 1101 are both great classes. I used to have a real problem with speaking in front of a large group of people but because of the tight knit commmunity that these two classes provide(and the excellent instruction and lessons from Professor Davis.)  I was able to overcome most of my fears when it comes to public speaking. Professor Rosens english class is also very enjoyable. We have lots of readings which are not that hard and she often goes into greatly detailed discusions about the readings and is always asking questions and provoking thought so we can understand something or rather to look deeper into a subject. You are going to have a lot of fun in both classes and you should look forward to it.

Advice for future students

Get ready to explore the great opportunities that you will observe in Brooklyn. I know when you hear about Brooklyn, it may seem boring. but it really isn’t. You can find so many interesting things. There are tons of sight-seeing adventures you can go with your families and friends. Unlike Queens or Bronx there aren’t much places you get to see. So why not visit Brooklyn. You will get a lot research that you guys have to work on. Both of these classes Effective Speaking and English 1101 (Prof. Davis & Prof. Rosen) are great classes. You will have the most amazing time within these two classes. In English, you will get to learn sources, summaries, and how to interpret essays. I mean hey its college might as well get used to it. The one thing I recommend you guys to do is when you get projects you guys should start it the first day because there are outlines and drafts that are due within a day or so earlier after the due date. One great experience I had was when our whole class went on the Walking Tour around City Tech. It was really fun and amazing. Professors took you to the places where you have never been to before. For effective speaking, you will get over the fear of talking in front of a group of people. You will have to do a few speeches that is part of the course and theirs only 2 exams. This class was pretty fun and interesting. the speeches were actually a motivation for us to do better and get over our fear. I mean I did it, but I still need to improve a little bit more. Good Luck and Enjoy!
