Test of Time Summery

In Test of Time the difference between primary and secondary sources and what they entitle are compared. The center point of the comparison is what is included of the events within the Brooklyn Theater fire and what is not. The events starts with the fire taking hold just before the last act of the melodrama “The Two Orphans” with 1000 people attending the performance split over 3 tiers of seats. They are not told of the fire and the show goes on as the fire becomes a blaze. However the Blaze becomes an inferno and is now seen by the audience who start to panic and run for their lives. However the theater had no direct way from the top tier to the ground floor to the only exit. This led to people collapsing down the steps and being trampled, blocking the stairwell. While this was happening the upper tier was dying from asphyxiation and the falling debris. The conclusion in both is also the same with over 300 dead and the theater being no more. What is in Kate Claxton interview with the Philadelphia Times 9 years later and what is in the historical archives at the Brooklyn Historical Society is the same event but told in different ways.

Advisement Letter

Dear Next Year Students,

Everybody is scared during their first semester of college. You don’t know what to expect and your really clueless. You really want to do well and don’t get distracted and keep a high GPA for your first semester. One thing I can tell you is that college is nothing like high school where the teacher will chase after you for your work. You have to be on your work and you can’t be lazy and think that you can’t slack or be careless on your work because you won’t get a good grade. In English and effective speaking it involves a lot of writing and presentations. In English you will have to write six papers which two are the midterm and final exam. The midterm and final exams are basically the same format you have to follow. You will have to write a summary for the first part and the second part you have to write an essay comparing the essay question to the story and your life. The papers you will write will be based off a location you will choose and you will use that location to write your papers for English and your speeches for Effective speaking. Make sure you choose a location in Brooklyn that has a lot of information on it because it will benefit you a lot in writing your essays and speeches. Take the advantage of the doing all the HW’s that involves you in writing a summary because it will really help you a lot in passing the class. For effective speaking make sure you follow the speech outline and time yourself saying your speeches and you should receive a good grade in the course. For the midterm and final exam for speech make sure you study for the exams because you may think it’s all common sense but it’s really not it’s a lot of information that you have to know. So remember don’t be lazy, be on your work, and don’t get distracted by anyone.

Sincerely ,

Brandon Jaspaul

Letter of Advice

Location? That is a word you should be getting used to as you begin your semester as a member of this Eng 1101 Course. This Eng 1101 course revolves around certain locations in which you will further expand your knowledge on them so that you can be able to further expand your reading and writing skills. The process of it all is very overwhelming since you will have to do things you wouldn’t normally do in your other classes. These things include going out and searching for a location that catches your eye and doing research on it for a project, taking photographs on your own instead of using Google as your source. Here’s more advice, the writing isn’t particularly difficult but don’t wait until the last minute to try and finish your work. This course consists of a lot of preparation and thinking on all projects. As long as the work is completed on time you shall be fine. One new thing that you can look forward to is blogging. Before this course, i had never in my life written a blog post and now at the end of the course, i can say i have written more than enough. Towards the end of the semester, you might feel the urge to not give it your all since focusing on the same location over and over again can be tiring but that won’t be the best choice. You have to find something new that interest you so that you can finish the course out strong. One thing would be varying locations if you’re able to so that way you won’t get tired of writing about the same place over and over again. That’s something i wish i could have know at the beginning. The last piece of advice is to bring some creativity to this course as well as a positive attitude. It is an enjoyable course as it opens up your thinking box and revolves it around locations that surround us in our everyday life.

Summary of Project 4

In the Project 4 research essay, I as the author discussed and analyzed two storied accounts in the history of the Brooklyn Bridge. These stories were the death of John A. Roebling and the Stampede of 1883. I first analyzed them and explained the stories in complete detail. Then i compared and contrasted them as this was the only way to see how different and similar these accounts are. The similarity in the two stories were that both of them resulted in huge tragedies. The death of John A. Roebling was tragic since he was the men responsible for the Brooklyn Bridge while the Stampede of 1883 resulted in the death of various human beings and put fear in everyone’s mind. However the aftermath is where the differences come in to play. The death of John A. Roebling resulted in more people dying from working on the bridge and his son becoming ill as well. More tragedy seem to come their way. In the Stampede of 1883, the deaths resulted in people testing out to see if the bridge was safe thus preventing such event from happening ever again. In the essay i stated “history can be defined as an argument on how we interpret the past” which shows how others view this differently.

Summary Of Project #4

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the most historical and valuable landmark in Brooklyn that has so much history behind it. I decided to talk about the reconstruction and construction about the bridge for project number 4. The construction of the Brooklyn Bridge was so long and arduous that it came out to be the world’s longest suspension bridge in world at the time. It led to so many benefits and achievements that classified it as one of the most valuable man made structure made in the United States. The Construction of the Brooklyn Bridge was made to satisfy the needs of the 19th century not the 21st century. The reconstruction is occurring because the bridge is no longer the eighth wonder of the world, though it holds historic significance, it holds little to no value to the average New Yorker. Ultimately the renovation is necessary to provide New Yorkers with full functionality; however it is arguable that the old bridge is causing interference of its potential as well as more expenses to the city for renovations instead of replacements. The Brooklyn Bridge will always be a great place to visit to see all the features it has to offer to you.

Summary of Project 4

Brooklyn Bridge Park is full of history and is such a wonderful park. This is why I decided to write about it for project 4.  In my essay of the Brooklyn Bridge Park is about its past on how it used to be before, and how it is viewed today. What’s also mention on my essay is about the event when hurricane sandy hit Brooklyn Bridge Park. In Update, Brooklyn Bridge Park The author described the hurricanes attack on the park. “Winds toppled a few trees, but most survived, and the railings, benches, and posts were unscathed. But in exceeding the projected 100-year storm-water surge by nearly two feet, Sandy ruined most of the waterfront park’s electrical system.” Even though the Parks neighborhood was badly damaged, Brooklyn Bridge Park stood up against the storm. It is amazing how much Brooklyn Bridge Park has changed over the years, that centuries back it was not even park just old piers. Even today it was debated if Brooklyn Bridge Park was actually a park, which In Debate Rages on Housing at Planned Brooklyn Park by Sam Roberts talks about. Well in the end, Brooklyn Bridge Park is a park and haves to be the best and biggest park in Brooklyn!

Posterity

Noun:

People in the future, all future generations

” We cannot celebrate his memory the way a posterity ought to, by acknowledging a debt we’re called upon to honor, and so we want to celebrate his memory by confessing to a bankruptcy that dishonors us”

I now understand that that the people from the future should acknowledge his memory by accepting or confessing to a bankruptcy that may dishonor them.

Defenestrated

Verb:

To throw out of a window

“I once defenestrated a guy. The cops got all pissed off at me. I was drunk, but they said that was no excuse.”

I now understand that the man threw a guy out of the window and that is why the cops where pissed at him.

The parachute jump is a defunct amusement ride in Coney Island.

Project # 1- Introducing Yourself

My name is Jaime Junior Garcia Martinez, I am18 years old and I am currently attending the New York City College Of Technology. This is my fist year in college and while I am not the first one out of my family to be in college I still believe it is an achievement worth celebrating. While growing up I never really had the chance to live in the place that I was born in which is New Jersey so I really can’t say that I “come” from New Jersey, instead I had the chance to live in Mexico and therefore I learned Spanish before I had the chance to learn English. While living in Mexico I also learned how to play Soccer, Tennis, and Kickball, I even got to learn some of their typical dances too but if I were to be honest then I would say that I am not a good dancer, so therefore I guess you can say that I am more Mexican than American and also a terrible dancer. Some of my hobbies include playing sports such as Soccer and Tennis, I also like to play video games and read books, I am also a big fan of scary stuff. People who get to know me really well will find that I am a very emotional person who does not actually like to show those emotions to other people who are not friends.

I chose this avatar because it had a video game character reading a book which are two of the that I enjoy to on my free time. Another reason for this choosing is because I grew up looking up to sonic, not because of his cocky attitude but because of his hatred towards injustices and evil.

Some ways in which people can misinterpret the picture that I chose has an avatar are  thinking that I am a person who is addicted to video games, that I am a nerd or that I don’t like putting pictures that actually depict myself.

My goal in life is to become a professional video game designer, this is due to the personal feeling that I have which is: video games are a form of art which can make people have reactions towards the games themselves. That is the main reason why I spend as much time has I possibly can playing and researching the ways on how to make a product that I can be proud of.

My profile is meant to convey that I am a person who likes to play video games, read books, and even a person who likes to scare himself from time to time. With this description of myself I hope to better inform the people who don’t know me and wish to know more about me.
