Tips and tricks for ENG 1101

If you’re taking ENG 1101, then you’re going to find out a few things about New York whether you like it or not. If you’re new to this part of New York then you’ll learn about it eventually. Your best bet to an easier time in class is to find someplace that you’re really interested in. If you have the time, then take a walk around and see what looks nice or fun. If you don’t have the time to do that then I’m sure you can be creative. There are a number of things that you can write about, especially the historical landmarks. A large amount of my class mates did their research and projects with the Brooklyn Bridge as the topic. This is defiantly a safe bet, since there is so much to write about it, but if you want to be more noticeable or stand out, then you may want to write about a different place in New York. No matter what location you choose, don’t pick a location that you find boring. If you do that then, you’re likely to put yourself to sleep when writing or presenting your project. You have to feel that you can talk about this topic for hours and hours. When you have the location for your topic, then you’re next step is to do some research. You have access to a number of sources that can tell you about your topic. You can go see a location as it is today, but you also want to know how it was like before you heard about this place. The history can be just as interesting as the place is now. Assuming you pay attention in class, you should do fine. If you hold interest in the location that you chose as your topic, then the essays and speeches write themselves. You can write your assignments in minutes if you are interested in the topic. You’re success in this class is heavily influenced on your topic. After that, then everything should be fine. With that said, good luck! Have fun with the endeavor known as college.

Summary of Metrotech Center

Metrotech Center is a fascinating place with a lot to offer. Originally, this was a place built as a non-profit improvement district and has grown to me a commercial and academic hub. It has some good conveniences, a great location, and an interesting community. Metrotech Center is a real help. You can find a number of restaurants and shops here. I have gone to the Subways restaurants for lunch fairly often. There are also shops to get supplies and materials. The location is one of the best benefits about being in Metrotech Center. The Metrotech Center commons has been the easiest and fastest way to get from the train station to NYCCT. Metrotech Center has a great number of trees, sculptures, and other decorations strewn about. During my two months of college I have seen many events and gatherings such as concerts, charity organizations and many other activities. We can find a number of conveniences in the area such as our next lunch. The location of Metrotech Center has made our commute to our classes easier. Even if we do not understand the sights and sounds of Metrotech Center we still see them as fascinating projects and events.

A piece of advice for freshmens

Dear Incoming students,

One of the course which is required to take in college in ENG 1101. This course enhances your ability to write essays, summaries, read different texts etc. As we all know the reality that college is not easy. But one can get lucky by getting enrolled in a learning community during their first semester which by taking ENG 1101 & SPE 1330. Starting of a fresh new life in college and hearing that your class title is actually “Being in Brooklyn” might seem pretty boring at first especially when you are from another neighborhood. But as we all know we should never judge a book by its cover. This class is designed in such a way that incoming freshmen students who have no knowledge about the neighborhood get the chance to know it in a pretty deep way. One of the most important thing to do in this course is to actually go out on a walk and find a place which excities and thrills you from inside  in learning more about that place. This is the most important thing in both the classes because the word “location” is going to come back and forth almost every other day in the classes. Picking up different locations, changing your location frequently might give you a very hard time during the semester. The best idea is to stick with one in which you are interested and stay focused. A lot of time is given to choose the location and a lot of opportunities are provided by both the professors. Giving out stories on places in Brooklyn, reading articles on place in Brooklyn, a tour with class near the campus, a library session with the whole class is done and many different things to help you out. One good thing about the class is that nothing is due to once everything has a deadline which gives you heads up that how you should plan on your schedule. Never plan on doing the paper a night before because you will end up screwing yourself. Try to stay in touch by asking them to look over your work by an email. Lastly, never ever hesitate asking help about anything because both Prof Rosen and Davis are very kind and generous. They are always ready with a solution to help you no matter what your problem is about.

Summary Of Project #4

The New York Transit Museum. For some people it is a museum, for others it can mean more than that. Court St was a train station that was located close to Borough Hall and Jay St Metro Tech, the station also had connections to other trains that went into Manhattan just like like Borough Hall, Jay St Metro Tech. Due to those other stations being placed into the convenience of the public Court St did not really had much ridership and was forced to close down, this occurred on June 1946. After being abandoned for years, the transit authority came up with the bright idea of using the Court St station has an exhibition, the exhibition consisted of showing the history of the public transportation such as buses and trains.  While the exhibition was meant to be temporary it has still continued until present day due to the increase in popularity among the people and tourists alike. With this information in mind I proceeded to pick two articles, one article was written by Edward Rothstein and in this article he describes the things that can be found on the museum. The other article was written by Melissa Noble and in this article she explains her point of view on the museum which mainly consists of facts ratter than describing the stuff that can be found on the museum.

Summary of Project 4

Brooklyn Historical Society is one of the few examples of the 19th century kind of a combined museum and library still in existence. The written piece by me compared three major renovations which were done to the building since it was built. Each renovation done by a different individual consisted of different ideas, proposals and theory. The first renovation done by George B. Post which used terra cotta and red bricks to support the central ceiling of the building and came out to be known as one of the first building to use locally produced terra cotta . Another renovation which took place by Jan Hird associates in 1999-2003 focused more on considering the benefits to its interior to preserve the historical resources. For ex: Installing climate control, renovating the clock tower and replacement of stained glass lay light. A last additional renovation was completed recently by Christoff which consisted of a new classroom with advanced technology, two new gallery spaces and newly built 200 seat auditorium. In conclusion, all three renovations done to the building were made to add more glory and splendor. However, all three renovations differed from each other because every individual has its own unique perspective of approaching to a similar thing.

Letter of Advice

Dear Incoming Students,

Everyone is nervous about their first semester of college, I know I was without a shadow of a doubt. You don’t know what to expect how you will be instructed by your professors because it’s a whole new environment. My first piece of advice is that the moment you step into your institution of education whether it be a university or a college, everything is completely different from the once familiarized high school procedure. When you enroll into Eng 1101 you better familiarize yourself with the word “location” because this course revolves around certain locations that your professor will announce and will require you to further expand your knowledge around this area especially if you are new to the neighborhood. This process can be overwhelming if underestimated because incoming students will find out shortly that they much do things that they’ve never done before in high school such as taking a 10-15 minute walk exploring the designated location, choosing a location that interests you and to take pictures of the location or landmark that interests you. Depending on the student the writing assignments can be very difficult if you plan to do it the night before, this course requires you to do things in a organized fashion IF you want a pleasing grade. This course also requires tons of preparation and discussions that will be done at home and in class with the professor and your fellow classmates. As long as you complete the assignments on time you will not be overwhelmed because as soon as you turn it that assignment, you are almost immediately handed a new one for the next couple of weeks. I have one last piece of advice, you must do your best work, and give it 100 percent it can be a bit boring nearing the end because you’ve been stuck on this one location/neighborhood for the last 3-4 months so pick a location that has a lot of historical value in which interests you. The professor I had, Professor Rosen did quite at good job explaining and discussing the projects and what we had to do which made our lives much easier. I hope you all have the best of luck!

Advice

When you first take on the location-based paper and before when you have to walk about the grounds near City Tech that is what you should do. Walk around and look for something that you think is interesting and that you would be able to talk about and not mind doing so.
First of all, you should find a place nearby City Tech. There is a lot of interesting sites in Brooklyn that you would be interested in researching, writing and talking abut like the Brooklyn Bridge, Dumbo, Coney Island area Verrazano Bridge and etc. But, most likely, forty percent of the students in your class will take Brooklyn Bridge as their topic and you don`t want to be among them. Coney Island and Verrazano bridge, for example, are interesting but far away from City Tech, so it does not satisfy location criteria.
You should do careful research and find sufficient number of documents and information about your topic, before you choose your location because otherwise you would have difficulties to find enough facts to support your topic and because you will have to work on your topic on and on during the semester and modify it. The papers and their topics will change overtime but should have similarities and you should be able to use what you had before to modify it. So if you do not love or at least not mind writing and talking over the same thing thing over and over again then you have a good spot. However if you are not then you should find something that you can do so with. Also be creative when approaching any of the projects because there maybe a very interesting story if you look at it from the right angle. Also if you believe you have found a better way of doing something or writing about a slightly different focus talk with the professor first and avoid any problems.

My fellow student, I would like to share with you the seeds of wisdom that I achieve through my own experience.
First of all, began to study from the beginning. Even though after lecture you might think that you understand everything your professor have told in class, take the notes in class and read your notes often. Read the assigned pages from text book. Do not look at your fellow student, who come unprepared to the class because “professor is not going to ask them”. Do and submit your assignments on time. Yes, it is a lot of work. But, hey that`s why you went to college, right. You want to be prepared to face professional competitive adult world.
Second of all, whatever you do, do not miss your classes. I understand you want to enjoy your student life with your friends and do fun staff. But if your grade will be “good” because of absences it might turn into “satisfactory”, and if it is “satisfactory”, because of absences it might turn into “unsatisfactory” and you will fail the class and will have to take it again.
The next important issue is, if you feel that you are not doing good, look for help, from the professor, from your fellow students, or from tutoring. You even, might withdraw from the class around the time of midterm, but try not to fail your classless, because it brings your GPA down.
The next important issue is, choose your major right away. Even if you do not know or not sure what you want to do, declare your major and take some classes. Only then you will understand if you like that area of study or not. Do not waste your valuable time on taking classes that you don`t need.

Project 4 Summary

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the greatest landmarks in Brooklyn and contains so much historical value. In Project 4 I, the author of my own discussed and analyzed two accounts based on the history and the physical attributes of the bridge. I decided to talk about the Stampede of 1883 and the deaths that occurred on the bridge. After I had analyzed and discussed the two accounts, I compared the two events to find out that both of these accounts do in fact are similar and have their own respective differences. A similarity is that the two stories resulted in death, the death of John A. Roebling the architect of the Brooklyn Bridge, while the Stampede of 1883 resulted in the death of many innocent lives and terrorized the population. However the difference between these two accounts is that after the Stampede of 1883 the “test” that P.T. Barnum executed prevented anymore false claims about the stability of the Brooklyn Bridge thus, prevented further deaths. In this essay I claimed that there were many tragic events that have happened in the bridge’s history but people are so blinded by the physical beauty of the bridge that most of them wont analyze any further and disregard these event.

Project 4 Summary

Hurricane Sandy can be said to be one of New York City’s greatest storms and it affected many people all around the city. People were left homeless and people were evacuated from their homes into shelters. One of these shelters is Brooklyn Technical High School. Brooklyn Tech took residents at Chai Home and Surf Manor and shelter them in the school for over two weeks.  These patients were greatly affected by the storm. They lost their homes and most of these patients were of special needs. This storm turned out to be a disaster for these people. However despite the devastation of the storm to these people, students of Brooklyn Tech were given a blessing by this storm. Students got over 11 days off from school and when they returned the period and class times were shortened. To the students at Brooklyn Tech, this may be more of a boon than a tragedy.  Students were even given an extension to college applications because of this storm. This storm helped most of the students at Brooklyn Tech more than it hurt them. Despite this storm hurting and badly affecting the lives of the patients at the adult homes, it affected the students of Brooklyn tech in a positive way.

Letter of Advice

Dear whomever it may concern:

By now you should know this is a course that requires you to take both speech and this specific English course. This course will focus very heavily on Brooklyn itself and almost every project you do for both classes are going to be on Brooklyn. The best advice I can offer you is actually walk around the area when you get that assignment. Walk around and find something you are actually interested in. This will help you so much because you can use that one place that you picked out for every piece of work you do for the semester in both classes. It will become twice as much work if you pick a place last minute and a few projects in, you decide you don’t want to do that specific place anymore. It’ll be a waste of research because you will have to do a final paper and a very important speech regarding that topic. Besides picking out a place early, the next best advice is to read the stories that Professor Rosen gives you. There is alot of in class discussion regarding these stories and if you don’t read them, you will have nothing to contribute to the discussions. There are quizzes and hand outs to do for these stories, so just read it. Some stories are pretty tedious but they’re not very long. The stories are usually stories about places in Brooklyn, the course is heavily revolved around Brooklyn hence the course being named “Being in Brooklyn.” You also need to learn how to write summaries. In this class, you literally write a summary for everything. You will be writing summaries for each story you read and you will even have to write a summary for the things you did in class that day. The final for English class is also a summary based essay and a thesis driven essay. With all of this said, Professor Rosen is one of the best professors you can get for this course and I wish you all the best of luck.
