Final Assignment Part 1 and 2 – Sal Mindiashvili

For my final project, I was inspired to choose the story the Ant and the Grasshopper by Aesop (http://read.gov/aesop/052.html). This fable describes how a hungry grasshopper begs for food from an ant when winter comes and is refused because while the ant was working hard during the fall season preparing for the winter, the grasshopper was playing the violin and did not seem to care about a thing.

The change I will be making to this story is the setting. Instead of some field out in the wild, I will be placing my characters in New York City. The ant will still be a hard working guy and the grasshopper will be the one not planning ahead. The demographic for my proposed book will be children living in New York aged 7-10.

Here are all my rough sketches:

The working ant is trying to tell grasshopper to stop messing around and start thinking about the future.
The ant is trying to warn the grasshopper about the harsh upcoming winter but the grasshopper is looking at his phone, not bothered.
The grasshopper is actually making fun of working ant.
Here the grasshopper is taking a picture of a hardworking ant and laughing at him
The winter has come and the homeless grasshopper has showed up at ant’s house for help.

Concept sketches:

I have chosen two of my favorite concept sketches below.

Character Design Concept – Jia Wei Wang

Here is a design concept of my Little Match Seller Girl. For reference, I’ve looked up some 18th-century winter fashion with the addition of looking up some character designs such as the little red riding hood. For this character concept, I gave her a hood and a winter jacket as you can see, in addition, gave her a little skirt, socks, and boot to fit the winter setting as the setting of the Little Match Seller is in winter in a Semi-urban setting. In addition I also made sure that my line art and the character design is consistent to the chibi look as my spin of the story is to make it chibi with a happy ending as I am not to fond of the ending from the original story.
