Reflective Weekly Photo Journal #3

It’s been a month since my arrival and it honestly felt like I’ve been here for quite a while. Over the past two weeks, much to my surprise I was homesick. I missed New York City and everything that makes New York City a place like no others. Even though I miss my friends and family back home, I also enjoy my experience at Disney College Program. By now I am already used to my role as an outdoor quick service vendor. However what I am not used to is working 30+ hours per week, living on my own and taking classes online and with Disney. I realized this is all part of my poor time management and not prioritize my task accordingly.

My first day of class was creativity and innovation. My instructor Ellen Tetlow started her career at Walt Disney World company as a cast member at Animal Kingdom.   She worked as a driver at Kilimanjaro Safari then got accepted to being an instructor due to her prior experience of being a professor at University of St. Louis. I find this class particularly helpful especially when it comes to not only being creativity but expand our thought process to be innovative as well. My instructor encourage us to write down our ideas and even sketch them whenever and wherever.

The second class I am taking is Human Resource Management. I was pleased to find out that our instructor is very humorous but also knowledgeable in the HR field. The reason why I took this class was to extend my knowledge on Human Resource Management and how it will pertain to my major in Hospitality. Most of my classmates are international students and majority of them are from China and Korea.  Being from New York City, I really enjoy the diversity of the class. Although it is only the second week of class, I learned a lot from business morality and values to what it takes to be a successful leader in the future.

P.S. We refer to our instructor by their first name since Walt Disney is a first name company.

Rewind Wednesdays at House of Blues, roommate bonding over music from the 80’s, 90’s and 00’s

My first week in Florida has been eventful, from arriving to Florida and meeting and bonding with all my new roommates, and starting training as a quick service food and beverage cast member at Pecos Bill cafe and inn at Frontier land in Magic Kingdom. The week started on Monday morning on August 17th with my 6AM flight to Orlando, from checking in and finding out that I will be residing at Vista way to casting where I received my training schedule and got my fingerprints taken all the way to my trip to Walmart to purchase a comforter set and food marked the beginning of my four month stay in Florida. On Tuesday I attended a housing meeting to learn about the basic rules and regulations that must be followed on property including anyone not living at the property must be off grounds at 1AM and if they are not apart of DCP they must be signed in by you and you are responsible for them. We were also warned away from party buses and were told that previously a cast member who was drugged and found naked in the bushes. Wednesday was the day I was able to completely unpack and settle down into my room slowly adjusting to life in a new house. While putting up my Polaroids I reminisced about my friends back home and the moments each picture was taken. Wednesday was also Rewind, Wednesdays at House of Blues in Downtown Disney where I attended with my roommates and bonded over music from the 80’s, 90’s and 00’s. Thursday was officially my first day working at Disney, traditions day. While attending class at Disney University I learned some fun facts about Disneyland and Walt Disney World. “Safety begins with me,” is one of the four keys they emphasize the most on, the other three are show, efficiency and courtesy. I also received my Mickey ears and also met the boss himself, there is only one Mickey. Friday was an eventful day, meeting up with several friends that came to Florida from Buffalo and traveling to Universal Studios for the day. While at Universal Studios I experienced the rides and it was exciting, they were interactive because you could feel the heat and it felt like I was in an movie or film, it was not something I believe I could have experienced on any rides in New York. Saturday was my first day of training, where we were introduced to operations, they explained and reviewed the basic understanding of how people should act or react in certain situations. Sunday we were given a tour of Magic Kingdom and also we were able to ride on the haunted house ride, my first Disney ride. Afterwards we were given a presentation on food and beverage and a trick to help remember the menu with a box method. I was also given the menu of my location and a picture of the uniform, looking at the picture I found out I was doing BOH (back of house) in the kitchen. I was excited because after conversing with my trainer she informed me I would be trained in both front and back of house, giving me more experience and a better understanding of how my location works and operates.

The “Traditions” was a great start of role training at Walt Disney World. After our three days of training classes, I was schedule to be on the job training. This is my first time at Hollywood studios as a cast member so I didn’t know what to expect. I thought to myself, “outdoor vending shouldn’t be that difficult, the tasks are simple such as selling the products and provide a great customer service.” Later did I know I underestimated this role as an outdoor food vendor. Ever since that day I’ve never worked so hard in my life before.

There are a lot of details to remember when it comes to fulfilling my role. Since I’m a CP intern, they gave us closing shifts most of the time. My training days were pretty successful. Even though some explanations were vague but I was glad that me and my training team worked until the end of the shift without complaining despite the weather conditions. I am also grateful for my trainers for being so kind and patient with the trainees. They made the working environment a friendly place to be in.

“Traditions” at Disney is the most talked about event in the Disney College Program. When I first heard of “Traditions” I thought it is a special orientation welcoming a new group of cast members that has been part of a tradition in the Walt Disney World Company. Even though part of my assumptions are right, it was more than what I expected to be. “Traditions” is  not your ordinary work orientation, it is beyond the simple concept of introducing the cast members to the company and going over the basic rules, guidelines and employee benefit.

Our instructors played an important role of being a Disney cast member to make “Traditions” for truly what it is. From their self introduction, they had been in our shoes as a Disney College Program participant and decided to pursue a career in the company ever since. They had inspired me to consider my career and continue my journey in the Disney Program and also expand my position in one of Disney’s partnered company as well.

The Four Keys were introduced to the new cast members and they are Safety, Courtesy, Show and Efficiency. It is not only important for us to remember but we have to perform the Four Keys while fulfilling our role on “stage”. These Four Keys are the keys to success of the company. It is our job as cast members to create magical moments for our guests everyday. The highlights of the Tradition was the tour the tunnel under Cinderella’s Castle, after all not a lot of people get to say that they’ve been there. At last, we finally got our Mickey Ears, name tag and the blue ID that grant us entrance to the parks.

In the article”Create Company Loyalty with New- Hire Practices”, I find it humbling that the president of the company had a humble beginning and worked his way through to position today. By creating loyalty in the company, the company puts their employee first by providing an anonymous hotline for any input or suggestions that will improve the company. In order for the existing staff to bond with the new staff, the break room had a portrait of the new staff and their history to helped them bond.

First Week of Disney College Program.

11802102_10153734793420466_1195079800_n

It’s been over a week since my arrival to the Disney College Program. The process of adjusting into a new state and new environment was easier than I expected. I do admit the life in Florida is on a slower pace than I was used to in New York. Speaking of New York, I was surprised to meet a lot of fellow college program students from New York such as Long Island or Upstate.

Being in the Disney College Program so far taught me how to be independent. Although there are resources to make our stay easier, we  own the responsibility to get our priorities right at the end of the day. The first week of the program includes seminar then followed by our training orientation such as “The Tradition”.
Disney Traditions is an important seminar that introduce everything that we need to know about the Walt Disney Company from past, present and future. We as “cast members” are responsible for creating the magic alive while we are on “stage”. They emphasize on the four keys which are Safety, Courtesy, Show and Efficiency. These four keys were repeated numerous time throughout Traditions. It is important for the cast members of Walt Disney Company to follow these four keys to guide us through success. A success that this company had built on since the opening of Disneyland in California.
One of the four keys they emphasize the most is SAFETY, the company created a slogan “Safety Begins with Me”. This slogan can be seen almost everywhere at the backstage of each park where the cast members have access to.
The most rewarding part about Disney Traditions is a tour in the tunnel below Cinderella’s castle. I finally received my badge with my name and my college on it. Also, a blue card that work as a park’s Main Entrance and last but not least Mickey Mouse made a surprise guest appearance.
P.S. There is only one Mickey.

Electronic Portfolio

My name is Chandanie K. Ramsahai. I currently major in Hospitality Management at the New York City College of Technology where I expect to receive my Bachelor of Technology in December of 2015. I would like to utilize my current volunteer and work experience to enhance the operations for a well renowned company within the Event Management industry. I think my organization skills and keen eye for detail will help me reach my career goals. This will also impact my work environment by making it a clean, serene area to work in. Once I put my mind to a task I give it my all and I go above and beyond to ensure the task gets done in a timely and efficient manner.

Journal 15

I’m still unsure of what my future holds, unsure of where I will be working one day, where to live and what to do to push forward however, coming to Florida has taught me so much. I learned how to become independent because sometimes you have to risk it all to move forward and perhaps even suffer a little. Florida has left a big footprint in my heart, I have never been happier else where. I loved the blue sky, tall palm trees filled with coconuts, warm water and the environment is so pure like I’ve never seen before. Although I’ve always been a city-like girl I think it’s time to think outside the box because life in New York is changing rapidly. Over saturated madness where is becoming very expensive to life in a cage, I’m thinking long term. Thinking that’s not what I would like for my prosperity, for now I must find ways to make money in the big apple and then when I am financially stable go life a relaxed life in a place like no other endless summer Florida.

Thanks to this internship I’ve learn to fly, be wise and enjoy life a bit more. I had the pleasure to be able say I lived else where and now I have a different perspective about life overall. I always taught I was open minded but I was wrong, I recently became really open minded ever since I completed my internship. I can’t wait to see what the future holds, for now I must keep working hard to pursue my own magic.

Thank you for all the support from everyone!

After having the time of our life’s in Miami we drove to the keys, each out of the 13 keys has very unique beauty. The keys are great for fishing, watching exotic birds, iguanas and manatees. The water of the Gulf of Mexico is very clear and warm, the sea food is to die for! The keys are a great place to get away from it all.IMG-20150604-WA0008

The southernmost point of the US was a beauty .IMG-20150604-WA0003 The end of route 1 had a special meaning for my boyfriend and I since this route runs all through the East coast along with I-95. By coming to Key West we have officially drove all through the East Coast twice! Poor car.
