Journal #8

After being at Pop Century Resort working as a housekeeper in one of the training buildings for two months, I have been relocated in another building with a different manager. I am kind of nervous, because each manager has different rules and leadership style. However, I am keeping a positive attitude knowing that this new change is going to end up teaching me even more about t my role, but also about leadership. Somehow I like changes; I believe that changes always bring good opportunities for us. In regards, to my classes we have a labor exception that ended up today. Now that we are just a couple of week before the finals, we can feel the excitement in air. It has been challenging to work as a full time and go to school at the same time. I am super happy having this opportunity of growing everyday not just in my personal life, but also as a professional that is looking forward to be a leader into the hospitality field.

  1. You mentioned that you were in a “training building” at Pop Century. Can you explain that statement more as students have not mentioned that in the past. Do they manage new employees in one concentrated area and then move them on as they develop greater skills? How do you feel about this style of training and management? Do you think it is effective?

  2. Sure!! The fact is that Pop Century Resort is the biggest resort at Walt Disney World. So, in order for our leaders have a more effective management style into the operations, they decided to have three of our ten buildings as training buildings. Therefore, they keep the new hires part/ full time and college program students together during their first 90 days in the company, while getting the special training. After those “90 days of probation,” we are supposed to be relocated in other buildings, however with the college program students that process is slightly different. Since we are here just for a small period of time, they try to keep us all together in the training buildings. In my personal opinion, I do like this style of training and management for several reasons:
    1. It is more organized
    2. It is more effective when it comes to time management and Quality inspections for our leaders/ managers
    3. With this particular training style we receive regular feedback from not just our leader but also our trainers whom regularly are keeping in those building too.
    4. Moreover, it is a super effective way of management because our leaders are able to keep us on track. They are able to keep a better record of our development and evolution throughout the training process. It also allows them to know more about us and evaluate our skills closer.
For me, it is somehow more like a personal commitment in which the managers and the trainers get together in order to train us in a specific way, in which we can be able to reach and accomplished the standards of the company.
