Working exhaustion

Classes are finally over and instead of me thinking I will be having two whole days off, I am scheduled to work on my days off.  As summer approaches a lot more guests are staying here at Disney World, and over at my resort a lot of people have been transferred to Disney art of animation resort, so we have all been working crazy hours.  I will be putting in about 55 hours this week and am completely exhausted already.  Since my position has been changed to consolidated GT, i work about  10 hours a day, and am always the last one out of the office.  Even though I’m working working extreme hours I do love my job and I learn something new everyday.

If any management positions are in your future, your going to wish for 10 hr days as 12 hr shifts seem to be the norm when it comes to the hotel industry. Just keep in mind that as a young professional, putting in the hours now is more realistic than say 10 years from now when settling down and starting a family may be what you desire. So hopefully when that time comes, your career will be at a level in which balancing work and family is possible.

    • Very true, while “paying your dues” remember that during your early career that networking and making decisions that balance risk and commitment is vital to reaching the management positions you desire.

What does GT mean? Art of Animation Resort is new, can you describe the resort?

GT means “General Teller”. By being a Gt I are responsible for all the funds at your location, for example we have five locations at Caribbean Beach; Food court, sit down restaurant, pool bar, room service Delivery, and merchandise. As a General Teller you are responsible to bank all these locations out, Collect their money at the end of their shift, make sure their revenues and EDS are correct, drop their money in the TCR machine, and file out all their paper work. During the day though, you are also responsible for your cashiers. Making sure they are rotated from register to register, making sure they took their breaks and making sure they have enough money/coins in the registers at all times. Even Though the food court closes at 11pm, I get out around 1:30 because of the money that must be counted and sorted and filed into the system. It is a very big step for me to be doing this position but I know it will be beneficial to me in the future.

You are very lucky. I wish we are that busy in Epcot for attractions. I am hoping for at least 60 hours a week and I’m getting barely 40. Ever since Test Tract closed down, we have a lot of cast members and not enough hours. You should take advantage of all the hours given to you, the more you work the more chance you get to prove yourself worthy of your job and being able to handle anything they request of you. Keep up the good work and show them the City Tech pride!
