Are you, or do you know, a motivated, collaborative undergraduate scholar at any of CUNY’s 2 or 4 year campuses? Then consider applying for the CUNY Peer Leaders program!

CUNY Peer Leaders is a program housed at the Graduate Center that welcomes 30+ undergraduate students annually from across CUNY colleges. The program supports their leadership and mentorship skills, which they in turn use to to create pathways for humanities based scholarship with a core component on elements of self-care, wellness and social justice. CUNY Peer Leaders develop a culminating project of their choice and create a portfolio of public writing pieces or other creative works on the program blog, with guidance from peers, staff and faculty. 

CUNY Peer Leaders are required to attend a community building orientation in late January, where students learn about important resources and acquire vital skills that will aid them in their service as a CUNY Peer Leader, attend biweekly meet-ups (hybrid) on Friday afternoons (3:00pm to 5:00pm), and workshops and events designed to build community and leadership skills. 

Students will receive a stipend of $500 for their participation in March 2026, as well as support for other modest funding opportunities for additional projects students may work on, if financial circumstances permit. 

All CUNY undergraduate students are welcome to apply by completing the online application form by Tuesday, September 30, 2025.

Young Scholars in Writing: Social Media Team

This message comes to us from the editors of Young Scholars in Writing: Undergraduate Research in Writing and Rhetoric:

Hey, all! Please pass this information along to any students who may be interested in joining the social media team for Young Scholars in Writing. We’re looking for volunteers to help manage the blog and social media sites during the summer or year-round. 

During the summer, we’ll feature the authors recently accepted for the newest volume of Young Scholars on the website’s blog. Year-round, we’re looking for anyone interested in creating new content on the blog or social media sites that helps promote the journal or the mission of undergraduate research. Undergraduates and graduates of any major are welcome to apply!

Anyone who volunteers will get credit for the content they create and will be referenced in the masthead of the next issue of Young Scholars in Writing (due to be published by the beginning of next year). If they have questions, they may email Charles McGregor at charles.mcgregor@utrgv.edu. The deadline to apply is May 8th, and we’ll have our first Zoom meeting around the third week of May.

Department of the Navy’s Summer paid internship opportunity

It’s not too late to apply!  The deadline is Friday, November 8th at 11:59pm. The Department of the Navy’s HBCU/MI Student Internship Program (SIP) Application Web Portal is now open for students to apply for paid summer 2025 internships. Due to program expansion, students now have the opportunity to apply to 10 diverse internships programs with wider focus areas including engineering (electrical, mechanical, chemical, nuclear, aeronautical, and civil), medical to include dentistry and nursing, law, computer science, data science, cybersecurity, business, logistics, biology, and chemistry. We encourage all HBCU/MI students to apply for these valuable paid internship opportunities. Please share this information widely within your academic and social networks.

Hudson River Park Internships

Hudson River Park is hiring paid seasonal Environmental Educators and seasonal Field Science Assistants! Hudson River Park’s River Project team conducts research and offers hands-on STEM programming to communicate the ecological importance of the Park’s 400-acre Estuarine Sanctuary as a living laboratory for community engagement, stewardship and learning. These seasonal positions are a great opportunity for college students or recent graduates to gain experience in environmental education, science communication and field science.

NASA Internships

Today at the 20th Semi-Annual Research Mixer, a representative from NASA came to talk about internship opportunities! He recommended checking out Intern.NASA.gov and look at the Opportunities/Projects. The closest location is at Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) so filter for that Center, and for the Summer 2020 session. There are many opportunities available, so do some research and prepare your application (remember, get your letters of recommendation and transcripts for the application). Applications are due March 8th, so add this to the top of your to-do list! New internships are being added all the time, so keep reading!

Apprenticeships at Ugly Duckling Presse

Ugly Duckling Presse is seeking to fill two part-time paid apprenticeships to begin March 2019. Working closely with the UDP Collective, apprentices will undertake important and varied work while learning how a small press operates from every angle and helping to shepherd UDP titles through the editorial, production, and publicity process.

Apprentices play an essential role in running a small press on the day-to-day: from packaging and mailing books, preparing promotional materials, and website maintenance, to executing publicity initiatives and providing production assistance. However, apprentices’ tasks are not limited to in-house administration: they also contribute essential design and editorial work for a range of projects, and work with a high degree of creative and professional flexibility on self-guided projects. Ideal candidates will be exceptionally detail-oriented, organized, and able to self-direct in accordance with time sensitive schedules.

Apprentices must be communicative and open to constructive feedback, passionate about the arts and poetry in particular, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment while juggling diverse responsibilities. We especially welcome applications from people of color, with disabilities, and of the LGBTQ community.

Apprentices commit to two days per week in the UDP studio, as well as assisting at occasional events, book fairs, and our open-house volunteer days. Apprenticeships are for 15 hours per week at $15/hour.
