About Me:

I have a very strong background in magazine development and pre-production work (Photoshop touch ups). I understanding close to all of the Adobe Creative Suite programs. I hope to work in a large fashion magazine house doing exactly what I love to do: edit photos and magazine column organizing. I would like to come in at a designer or artist position and eventually build up to an art director. I love New York for the financial/corporate aspect of it, and that’s the type of environment I hope to work in.

I can easily say that after looking through multiple sites and job descriptions, I had a completely different expectation. I can say this with both good and bad feeling. One of my personal fears in life was that when I graduated with a degree, it would be nearly impossible to find a career related job. Literally, this is a life long fear. But there are jobs out there related to my career. While searching for jobs I realized that there are jobs in my field. Not necessarily in magazine development, but definitely in the Advertisement Design field overall. The one concern I do have though, a lot of the jobs I found were for senior positions, not entry or regular positions. Of course with senior positions means a large amount of time and experience in the field, which as a college graduate, I don’t necessarily have. Sure, one day I would love to be a senior project manager or senior art director, but it would be something I work up to. I don’t even think I would want the position even if it was offered to me, simply I’m not the type of person to jump into something I know I don’t have experience with. That part of the job search does concern me. Another concern came with the entry or regular entry jobs that I was able to find. Like I mentioned earlier, the jobs were not necessarily in the magazine development area, where I would like to ideally be. But, more importantly, all of the jobs were in the online web advertising, or marketing. In today’s day and age, I get it. Digital and web plays a huge role in advertising. But, print is still a massive part of it. Until this day, companies pay a humongous amount of money for print ad’s over online marketing/ads. That is exactly where I want to be, with print ads. I personally HATE any sort of web design work. So again, I expected far worse before this mini job search. I was expecting to find little to nothing to be honest. It’s great to see that there are jobs out there.

Mini-job search :)

As a candidate for any/all employment opportunities my main qualifications are that I am a fast learner and I adapt swiftly to my new work environment and duties. I am excellent at time management and therefore punctual. I am also fully bilingual as I am a native Spanish speaker which facilitates my adaptability and diversity to a work place. I am presently looking for employment within my field which is the legal world. Although, I do have experience in the legal industry this was many years ago. My last employment title was Administrative Assistant, I am knowledgeable and skillful in the office setting and knowledgeable with chain of command and what is expected or required as office employee.

Most of the employers which I listed below, are legitimate jobs which I am capable of attaining. The jobs require experience in the office setting, some require a bachelor’s degree others just require experience which means I am a candidate. Legal offices in real estate, divorce, and litigation, some even require an additional language. However, because I know my legal job was many years ago, I am also applying to job postings that are in the office setting. I do not want to sell myself short and want to explore all my possibilities. If I do no find a suitable legal job to my liking I will then continue to work in the office setting until the desirable legal position is available to me and my needs.

https://www.linkedin.com/jobs2/view/35092462?trk=jserp_job_details_text

My major is electrical engineering, and in the field that I am pursuing, I believe that what my employers are looking for is people with an associate, bachelor or master degree in engineering, or electrical engineering. My main qualification is an associate degree that I have earned in engineering from another college which gave me a lot of knowledge on what engineering is. My strength will be from classes that I have taken before, for example circuit analysis which taught me the way electricity flows, and what is required to make it happen; this class also taught me how the light works, for instance, if the light wires are connected in series, then if one light goes off, the other lights will also; on the other hand, if the lights are connected in parallel, then if one light goes off, the rest will stay on. One of my skills is learning a task very fast, especially something that I like. I am very good at technology, so anything that requires using technology, I believe I will grasp very fast. The type of position that I am currently seeking is an entry level position so that I can learn everything from the bottom and work my way up. My professional goal is help create something new that will either save several lives or improve the way people live; secondly I want to be one of the leaders in whatever company that I am working for; the type of work that I am mostly interested in is field work because I find that to be more fun, or, half of my time in the field and the other half using a computer software, but I don’t want to sit at a table all day looking at a computer.

The qualifications and skills that are most desirable in engineering is someone with experience, which is sadly one of my weaknesses because I haven’t had an engineering job before. In addition, someone who went to a trade school will also have an advantage when applying. Furthermore, earning an associate degree or better is most desirable. Several of the position that I visited on job posting websites require over three years of field experience and either a bachelor or a master degree in engineering. Because of that requirement, it is kind of difficult for me to find a job in engineering. Some of the title of these jobs are called operating engineer, automotive technician, electric field engineer, electric system engineer, and security analysis. Some of the organizations that are currently hiring are Con Edison, MTA, Major Chryster Dealership, Occidental Petroleum, Liebert Services and Turner Construction.  The kind of content-specific skills that these companies are looking for are people who have the ability to coordinate, design and built moderate to large projects dealing with electrical distribution system, able to layout electrical system using AutoCAD, and have experience with electrical load calculation; moreover, companies are seeking people with good working knowledge of SAP, rectifiers, NERC and SERC regulations. Also, recruiters are looking for people that are technical expert in electrical system. Verbal communication is best needed at these companies. I believe that my education and the hands-on experience here at City Tech will help me be prepared for these employers’ need because even though this is my second semester here at City Tech, I have spoken to one of the professors from the electrical engineering department and he told me that the equipment and the machines that companies such as Verizon, MTA, and Con Edison are using is the exact same thing that we are using in the lab, which I believe is one of the best hands-on experience.

Ajani’s Mini Job search

My ultimate goal is to one a have a successful career as a Production Manager for a Publication. Ideally, I would want to work for a comic publisher, or a tech magazine. My major in Graphic Art Production Management will help me some of the way in obtaining my goal. However, I have never been the type of person whom learn solely through lectures and reading. I’m one of those people who learns better “with their hands”. As I mentioned in the previous post, I work as a Prepress operator for a printing company. I have gained a lot of knowledge not only about printing but design.

One of the most important lessons that I have learned is that that no matter how beautiful the design is, if it can’t output (print or display) it means nothing. The only unfortunately thing is that I can’t get to where I want to be by working for this company. To obtain my dream job I know it going to take the right combination of work experience and technical skill in production. I also know that going to have to start at an entry level position so that I can build on my skills. I know it seems like I plan on doing double the work, but I believe that managers can gain more respect from their subordinates it they have relatable work experience. I have often worked for managers that had no idea about the operations they were responsible for. I find that this type of manager rarely are prepare for issues that may arise, and are quick to blame others.

A careers in graphic arts will continue my development, and hopeful the I can get an entry level graphic designer position at a publication. So, I started my job search Graphic Art/Publications, to which I found lot of Graphic Design oriented position. Some results did vary, as not all were for Publications. The overall qualifications are 1-5 years in a design environment (prepress for some), 4 year degree, organizational skills, technical skill using the Adobe suite or Quark Xpress, Verbal and Written communication skills.

Katherine Pena – Mini Job Search

My qualifications include a Bachelors of Technology in communication design. I am bilingual- fluent in English and Spanish. I have extensive knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud- which includes programs such as Adobe Photoshop CS7, Adobe illustrator CS7, and Adobe InDesign CS7. Skills include photo retouching, color correction, strong typographic sense, vector imaging, packaging design and logo creation. My areas of interest are all things design including portrait and landscape photography with comprehension in studio lighting and basic knowledge of all modes of video production- pre production, production, and post production. Other non-design related skills include knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. I am able to take initiative and work with tight deadlines. I am also highly conceptual. I am seeking an entry level position in a graphic design firm or ad agency as a graphic designer. Specifically a jr. or assistant graphic designer. My professional goals include doing a lot of freelance work to build clientele. Once I have established a name in my field I’d like to become a creative director. Possibly, one day become a professor at a college or university. I am most interested in working with contemporary organizations with a highly creative workspace.

Employers in my field are looking for creative individuals with a bachelor’s degree in a graphic design related field. Companies are mainly looking for individuals knowledgeable in Adobe creative cloud. Employers stress knowing different mediums is a must. Being able to work on anything from a mobile app to a magazine spread to a website banner is what makes you versatile, and the more versatile you are the more prominent and useful your skills become to the company. Besides design skills they’re looking for applicants with good written and verbal communication skills for communicating with clients, colleagues and employers. They stress time management skills as a lot of projects have to be executed in a certain time frame. Positions available for a recent graduate are limited to jr. and assistant graphic designers. We’d help higher up designers conceptualize and weed out through bad ideas, then help with execution by working or smaller projects. When applying to these jobs, a resume and a strong portfolio are musts. While at City Tech, My knowledgeable professors have helped me fine-tune my skills. I also enjoy that the school offers a segment called ‘Meet the Pros’ where professionals from the design world visit the school and speak about their life as designers/artists. It lets us as students and designers know a bit about the potential hardships we may go through and also how to build contacts. This semester I’m learning how to build concepts to potentially run campaigns. It’s a bit different from my other classes due to the fact that the professor consciously chose to not let students touch the computers but instead focus on the ideas themselves, whether it be drafting, sketching, or content planning. I am hoping I will be able to get an internship or two before landing an actual job.

After searching for job postings in my desired career field, I realize that CEO’s are looking for COO’s  who have the able to lead the execution of the CEO’s mission for the company. The COO is responsible for providing leadership, organizational management , creating new programmatic strategies, and managing an operational aspect of the company’s annual budget. A COO must have at least a Bachelor’s degree with ten years of experience and a proven track record of success in a senior management position. Some of the key areas of expertise a COO must possess would be Finance, Human Capital Management, Data Reporting, Budgeting, Public Speaking, Fiscal Management, Human Resources, Program Development, and Project Management.

Some of the companies that are hiring COO’s are company’s that are in hyper-competitive marketplaces. Most big name companies like Facebook, Microsoft, McDonald’s, the NFL, and Ford Motor Company employ a COO, who’s overseeing the day-to-day operations of the company; and making sure the overall function is aligned with the company’s goals.  Additionally, some of the world’s most notable COO’s are Brian Turner, Robert W. Pittman, Roger Goodell, Mark Fields, and Sheryl Sandberg.

Other the other hand, CityTech and my education with CUNY hasn’t fully prepared me for this position as COO. After CityTech, I planned on attending Hunter College where I will major in English. And then, after Hunter, I would like to attend either Baruch’s graduate Master of Public Administration program with a focus in Finance and Operations Management or Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs with the same area of focus.  Therefore, I am still continuing my education with CityTech, who’s teaching me some of the fundamentals needed to go beyond.

Overall, COO’s are mainly second in command. A COO would be the CEO’s right-hand-man. As a COO, you’re viewed as the number two person; however, your position is developmentally critical to any company that’s wanting to grow and go beyond.

I understand the design community is very competitive, but I also believe that no one person has the same view of the world as another, which makes design a unique skill to have. I know I have a lot to learn and practice still but I hope by the age of 25-30, I have set myself in a field I am very happy with and love doing for the rest of my career.
