When living in New York City there is something that we all will always come across even though it is always mutually resented. That being, traffic. This is something that can easily be seen on my commute from to and from the college. Be it many various cars blocking the bus route, or the amount of people that are trying to get to and from work or school in this area, it can sometimes be a nightmare. There are several different things that can be done to avoid this traffic. One being that you can come off the bus a stop or two prior to your destination point and then walking the rest of the way there. It is even said that walking is good for your health especially when most Americans are overweight or obese. This alternate can really help in the transition to a healthier lifestyle.

For my commute to City Tech, I usually take the bus from the first stop, at Myrtle-Gates, all the way to the last stop, Myrtle-Jay Street, and while the commute is mostly smooth, when coming to the ending portion, it can be a tedious wait as we wait for the cars or people to get out of the way. An alternate suggestion would be to get out a couple stops prior at Navy or Prince Street and walking through the Myrtle promenade. Thereby adding some natural beauty into the commute as there are many trees and a lot of greenery there during the spring, summer and autumn months. This can also serve as an entry point to the various stores and restaurants that are along the strip.

In the article ā€œGive Your Ideas Some Legs: The Positive Effect of Walking on Creative Thinkingā€ by Marilyn Oppezzo, there was research done on the effects of walking when compared to creativity. There were four experiments done which linked more walking to an increased amount of creativity in the person. This can be very useful if your school or job demands a creative sense of work ethic but can also help your mind when going through the mundane activities of each day.

Another really good reason for adding the walk would be for the added value of seeing the greenery of the various parks that litter the city. It can be a change of pace when all you see are the tall grey buildings of our metropolis. You can see other animals like squirrels and various birds instead of the rats and pigeons that are always over the city streets. If you are a morning person, the chirps of the morning birds can be a pleasant background noise instead of the usual hum and revving of the almost industrial sounding vehicles that everyone is using to get to work in the mornings.

On the other hand, throughout the walk there are many types of people that can also be observed in the district. From the often loud and obnoxious sounding screeching and hollering of the middle and high school kids to the somewhat calmer and collected college students in the area. A vast difference can be observed. While it is understandable, or some might even say excusable for middle school children to behave in such a way, you can really see the difference in attitudes as they are usually in packs of all the same gender and retching at the other. As you morph into the high school kids you see they are more mixed while some of them remain in the loud middle school mentality. Going further up in line when observing the people of college age, they can be more mature than the others that share the streets with them, however, unfortunately, you can see that some never outgrow the immaturity that has been with them all their lives. It can be hard sometimes to differentiate the three groups as there are middle schoolers who look and dress well beyond their years and there are some college aged people who you would never guess are their age. The ones who you can never confuse though, are the business types that are always in suits along with the ones that are going to court. Although they may not wear suits, if you pay close enough attention, you can sometimes see that they wear their worries on their faces. They can appear timid and meek due to their circumstances or they can appear annoyed or irate. It can be interesting to see the various types of emotions people display when in the same situation as it can reassure that, yes we are all uniquely fashioned. The business types can be headed into the courtroom that is next door to the college or could be headed into any of the various buildings in the adjacent areas, but they all have one thing in common. Most are very uptight and snotty. They believe they are better than others. They can be seen pushing others out of their way. Some may say ā€œTheyā€™re in a rush.ā€ A simple excuse me would do. When anyone tries to approach them they have such disdainful looks upon their faces. A person should go and make their own inferences though as it can help you learn more about others

All in all, adding a walk into your daily routine can be a great experience as it will add some clarity and creativity into your day. It can keep you calm and collected and will be an overall great experience for your life.

The overlapping piers

As our countryā€™s economic rises, changes started to happened whether itā€™s new construction happening or new project getting planned to replace an old department or a house. Ever since our country is discovered, changes and development start to take place to create a community for us to live in. For new developments to happen today, our community will often strike down an old building for a new one to rise one, we replace the old one for a better and improved one. Though some old buildings are being replace, there are also mass amounts of old building being kept for ages. With the changes, it bought some major effects to the community and the area. Whether what kind of effect it is, positive and negative outcomes will alway comes with it.

While you taking your sweet slow walk through your neighborhood, youā€™ll probably will notice thereā€™s some changes in the community you live in. Whether itā€™s the deli across your house use to be another house or the apartment next door turn into a laundromat. These changes take times, it can be a year or less or maybe more. Not only just a community that changes, New York City is often evolving. One area contains the biggest change in my opinion is DUMBO. When you first enter DUMBO, youā€™ll notice the peaceful and quietness in that area but also itā€™s the most popular place for tourist to visit. DUMBO is a really huge park, when youā€™re standing in front of the entrance, the first view youā€™ll see is Manhattan, which the where tourists gather together and take a picture with the view. The park is divided into two different part in my opinion and each part has itā€™t unique environment. When you make a right turn in front of the entrance, you will enter the peace and quiet part of the park. This part is where most tourist gathers around and take pictures. Thereā€™s a indoor merry-go-round. Beside that, thereā€™s a giant yellow sign of the word ā€œONā€. This part of the park is best for people who want to relax, thereā€™s a lot of grass field around, whenever youā€™re tired, you can lay on the grass and enjoy the breeze.

My first time visiting DUMBO was three years ago when my friend decided to give me a tour. When I first step out the station, I notice the peacefulness around the neighborhood. There are variety of restaurant around the area but most of it are closed during daytime. Itā€™s a peaceful community and very high classed until all the bars open up at nighttime. Even though itā€™s winter, the park is still fill with locals and tourists. The breeze coming from the river gives me a chill in the vein. Thereā€™s a restaurant at the entrance, they have their own little garden seats which attractive tourists to have a brunch there and which bought some light to the area during nighttime. While I was walking down towards the pier, I saw some wooden docks are standing still in the water, some of it are covered in green seaweed. The wooden docks has a strong existences at DUMBO, itā€™s like a ugly duckling in the swans groups. There are larger amount of piers, each pier is a different sport. I was surprise at the size of the pier. Aside from the size, when youā€™re tired from playing, thereā€™s benches at the end of the pier for you to sit and enjoy the view of Manhattan.

The DUMBO we see today are totally different centuries ago. The piers we see today used to be shipping docks. Long ago, ships traveled through the ocean, enter the East River and stopped at the piers to drop the gigantic packages and thatā€™s the reason why the size of the piers are big. The wooden docks we also use to be part of the docks. Itā€™s hard to imagine the pier we stood on today used to be a place for trading and labor work. Every new developments brings either positive or negative outcomes to the area.

In my opinion, replacing the docks into piers does not completely affect the community. DUMBO is a quiet community, with ships coming in can chase the peacefulness away. It might be the easiest way for the ships to drop packages because the East River is right next to it. However, the noise can affect not just DUMBO but also Manhattan. East River is between these two boroughs, if DUMBO is affected by the noise, Manhattan have a high chance of getting affect also. No one will like to live around the shipping docks. With that thoughts, the area will turn into a no manā€™s land anytime soon. The price of the community will decrease which will brings negative affect to the economic. The DUMBO today is choose as one of the best view for wedding photoshoots.

There are a lot of overlapping in our city but we never bother to stop and clearly look at it. Our community change frequently, what might be across your house might be gone the next day for new constructions. Some overlapping can bring negative or positive effects for the community but it all base on oneā€™s opinion. In my opinion, turning the docks into a sport place has a positive outcome. The noise thatā€™s occurred by the ship can ruined the peacefulness in the community and tourist will no longer stop by DUMBO and enjoy the view.

Statue Criteria

On August 11th-12th, a ā€˜Unite the Rightā€™ Rally took a violent turn after white supremacist groups clashed with counter protesters ranging from members of Antifa, an anti-fascist group that is dedicated to ā€œsupporting oppressed peopleā€ and fighting ā€œthe amassing of wealth by corporations and elitesā€ (Jessica Suerth, CNN.com) and ordinary civilians when a car plowed into a crowd of counter protesters. The incident left a woman dead and over a dozen injured. What were the groups fighting over? A statue. After the incident, Bill De Blasio, the mayor of New York City, said on Twitter, ā€œAfter the violent events in Charlottesville, New York City will conduct a 90-day review of all symbols of hate on city property.ā€ With this action, a question has been in the minds of many Americans: What about the person, group, or ideal should be taken into consideration when creating a new statue or monument? The personā€™s impact on a certain event in American or world history should be taken into consideration when statues in America are being created. The individual(s) should also be relevant to the area that their statue/monument will be placed. A final piece of criteria would be taking into consideration why an individual may be celebrated by different people.

Every monument or statue dedicated to someone or a group has some sort of historical or religious significance. The statues that donā€™t represent people will usually represent a certain ideal. For example, the Statue of Liberty, a gift from France, was a symbol of democracy, enlightenment ideals, and the abolishment of slavery in America. But, as with many monuments, the meaning and story behind quite a few statues are interpreted differently by many. For the majority of those 14 million immigrants that entered America between the years of 1886 and 1924, the Statue of Liberty represented not democracy and the abolishment of slavery, but a sign of ā€˜welcomeā€™ that told them they were about to begin their new lives. Itā€™d be quite difficult to argue that the Statue of Liberty is a symbol of hate, so weā€™ll mention a famous controversial symbol: the Confederate Flag. The Confederate Flag is seen by many Americans as a symbol of hate. Conversely, Americans in the south see it as simply part of American (specifically in the south) history and a form of southern pride. What is called the Confederate Flag is a battle flag, it is what confederate troops marched to, fought in the name of, and died alongside during the Civil War. Some southerners celebrate the flag to pay homage to their ancestors that fought for a cause they believe in whether the cause was just or unjust, and thatā€™s reason to celebrate in itself. (Ben Jones for NYpost) It is, however, important to explicitly state that modern American values are not that of the values of the Confederacy. What should be supported is the spirit of fighting for a cause and the celebration of ancestors, not the archaic philosophies that have proved to be outdated and generally looked down upon. The Confederate flag can not only serve as historic symbolism, but an ode to revolution. The Confederate flag is significant to American history and thereā€™s no denying that fact. Though the symbols may still be flown in support of unjust and immoral actions or beliefs, keep your mind open as to what else the flag may mean to others.

The removal of statues in America isnā€™t a new phenomenon. Jacey Fortin from the New York Times claims that ā€œjust five days after the Declaration of Independence was ratified…soldiers tore down a gilded statue of King George III in Manhattan.ā€ The toppling of the statue was in the name of defiance to an old ruler. With that statue destroyed, the patriots felt a bit freer. Ā Another statue is at risk of being toppled. At the center of national controversy is the Robert E Lee statue in Charlottesville, Virginia. Lee was a general in the Civil War on the side of the Confederacy and was widely known for his military expertise. Some believe that Robert E. Lee is undeserving of a monument because of his position on slavery (in support of it) during the Civil War and because of that, he is a symbol of hate. Because he is considered a hate symbol for some, he is one of many controversial figures facing threats of the toppling of monuments and the renaming of places that were previously dedicated to and named after him. Because of the fact that we as humans have emotional impulses, I believe it is very important to look at what history an individual brings to a specific place. For example, Robert E. Lee was a prominent figure in the Civil War, and he was known for being from and representing Virginia during the Civil War. Residents of southern states are usually proud of the statues they have, not just because of the aesthetics of the monuments, but because the monument makes the state of Virginia – and in this case Charlottesville, VA – historically significant.

When it comes to monuments being divisive, the only ā€œfairā€ way to deal with a statue is to keep it where it is or to either transfer it to a museum or destroy it. So, in light of the recent events, many polls were done to assess how Americans felt about Confederate monuments. A poll done by Marist College found that 44 percent of African Americans, 65 percent of Latinos, and 65 percent of white Americans believe that the Confederate monuments should remain as they are for the sake of historic symbolism. Eleven percent of African Americans said theyā€™re unsure while 40 percent said to remove the statues. Twenty-four percent of Latino Americans and twenty-five percent of whites said that they could be taken down, respectively. While that poll was done after a racially fueled incident in 2017, another poll was done by CNN on the 26th-28th of July 2015, 10 days after the Charleston church shooting by Dylan Roof. After the shooting, images of Dylan Roof posing with a gun and the Confederate circulated on the internet, portraying the flag in a very negative light. Despite this, the poll found that 57% of Americans oppose ā€œredesigning state flags that feature Confederate emblems or symbols to remove references to the Confederacyā€. This shows that even today most Americans, in the face of a demoralizing situation would still allow the flag to be flown or for statues to remain because of not only their historical aspects, but because of what they main mean to those in the south.

In all, the historical importance, the location of a monument relative to their impact on an area, and how a certain symbol can be interpreted should be criteria when evaluating statues.Ā One cannot simply think about all of a personā€™s faults in their evaluations because then one can argue that Martin Luther King Jr. doesnā€™t deserve a statue because he cheated on his wife and is therefore an immoral figure. I say that the personā€™s historical impact, be it by way of discovering land like Columbus, fighting for civil rights like MLK, or even by creating military strategies like Robert E. Lee, is the most important thing to pay attention to when considering these statues and monuments for removal. Itā€™s also just as important to have the location of the statue/monument coincide with the personā€™s historical endeavors (areas they were known for occupying or where they were born) as it wouldnā€™t make much sense for there to be a Henry Ward Beecher statue in Montana if he never impacted that area. Finally, how someone interprets a symbol is important. Yes, people use the confederate flag when committing acts of violence, but that doesnā€™t mean that it’s a symbol that only incites violence. For some, the American flag represents unity and freedom; for others, it represents the very evils that corrupt this world such as greed and narcissism. In cases like this, it’s just a matter of perspective.

The life of Brandon

To introduce myself I am a freshman at New York City College of Technology pursuing a bachelorā€™s degree in Computer Systems Technology. Since young I had a robust passion for computers, I would always tinker with my old PC which was considered a relic to all the other ones out at the time. Since then I wanted to learn more on how computers work both hardware and software. I have a very strict mindset when it comes to school and social life. Basically, I feel free to do whatever I want if I have good report card at the end of each semester. I’m not like everybody else who has that set goal in life. I do look forward on becoming an IT Specialist for a high-end tech company such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, etc.Ā  You could call that a goal if you want, I see it more as a plan.Ā  One of many plans I have for myself, another plan I have is to maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher. If Iā€™m really motivated this semester I know it’s something I can achieve. I also plan on taking summer classes next year so that I can reach the achievement of an early graduation. Thus, taking me a step closer to living a rich and opulent lifestyle in the “Golden State”, also known as California. I want to move to the west coast because I feel as if thatā€™s where all the opportunities are for me, career wise. California is well known for having its vast number of technologically-based cities. Also, because I have dreams of living on Rodeo Drive in a big mansion.

Enough about my academic life and onward to the communal aspect of my life. I live in a full house which consists of 3 brothers and both my male and female progenitors. Living in Mill Basin has its pros and cons. I live near many buses so public transportation isn’t a hindrance. I graduated from John Jay Secondary School of Law, which is in Park Slope. But I feel as if Iā€™m far from everything. I have strong passion for music as well with some of my favorite rappers being A$AP Rocky, Playboi Carti, Max B, Don Q, and many more the list can go on. I also enjoy listening to old 80’s rock and soul music, only when Iā€™m with my dad though. Iā€™m heavily inspired by music because I feel like itā€™s more than just song lyrics and a produced beat. Itā€™s a way of art and thatā€™s how some artists portray their lives, through music. Thereā€™s underground rappers that I listen to daily such as ThouxanbanFauni, UnoTHeActivist, SkiMaskTHeSlumpGod, etc. I would consider working in the music industry if the IT field fails to comply with me thatā€™s the backup plan. Probably become a studio engineer or music producer.

In my profile picture, thereā€™s several high-end tech companies that are well known throughout the world. My intention is to get my degree in computer technology and work for one of these companies. I know I must work hard in college to complete this quest especially if I want to be a computer technician for a brand like Apple. I feel as if Apple doesnā€™t want to hire just any computer nerd, they want people willing to make change to the world, same goes for the other companies.

Some people may get a false idea and think that these are the only tech companies that I would want to work for in the future. There are over 100ā€™s of tech companies I would like to take my experiences to after I graduate college, some not even in the U.S. I just want to expand my horizons and make the world more technologically advanced.

I hope that after reading this you will gain a better understanding of who I am as a person and what I intend on becoming in the distant future. Overall, I am an easy person to get along with and Iā€™ve been told countless times that Iā€™m good at keeping conversations interesting. Throughout my years of college, I hope to meet tons of good people that can benefit me in the long run. I wish to just enjoy myself and have fun all the while working hard and staying focused.
