Walt Whitman Plaque

The monument that we chose was the Walt Whitman plaque on the Eagle and Warehouse storage building. This building was constructed in 1893 and was originally home of the newspaper Brooklyn Edge, which was edited by Walt Whitman. The plaque explains his story and how he was one of Americas greatest poets. Our article is from Biography.com. Whitman was born in 1819 and lived in Brooklyn and Long island with his family in the 1820s and 30s. At a young age Whitmans parents took him out of school so he could work with them at the family business. He started to love reading and became familiar with the works of Homer, Dante, Shakespeare, and the Bible. He started to teach for a couple of years but he wanted to put his full time into journalism. He started his own newspaper called the “Long Islander”, later he became an editor for the brooklyn daily eagle”. He had a set of ideas and opinions  on topics such as Womens property rights, slavery, and immigration. He wrote a poetry book called Leaves of Grass, “it was an attempt to embrace and welcome all people and races into one vision”. Whitman was considered one of Americas most influential poets and this is an important monument.

Why Collaborate

In the article Why Collaborate by Ellen Lupton she explains her views on the ups and downs of collaboration. The author loves to collaborate only under one circumstance, the other members need to have different skill sets and roles. Ellen states that ” A museum exhibition, like a Hollywood film, can’t be produced by one person; everyone involved must learn to get along (curators, educators, designers…” Basically everyone involved in the collaboration is like a piece to a puzzle. Also everyone needs to weigh in and do heavy lifting in the collaboration. Early in the article the author says ” I’d love to collaborate, as long as i can work alone. I often have felt that way about collaboration. Sure its a great idea as long as it doesn’t violate my personal work schedule or on my sense of control and authorship.” Basically she was a lone wolf and didn’t really like to work in groups. As the article goes on she tells us that collaboration is very important, for example Lorraine, Louise, and Rick are in a partnership and they work together to tackle big commissions that draw on all of their talents. Collaboration is important because you can come up with different ideas together with other group members.

I first came across this word while we were going over ENG 1101 English Comp 1, City Tech Library paper in class today. I have heard this word a couple times before, I kind of knew what it mean’t but couldn’t really give myself a perfect definition. The first half of the word is expert and that is basically someone who is an extraordinaire at doing certain things. After that i looked up the words and i saw these two definitions. I felt like both definitions weren’t complete so i put both. Both of these definitions give the perfect meaning.

“I’d love to collaborate, as long as I can work alone. I Often have felt that way about collaboration. Sure, its a great idea, as long as it doesn’t violate my personal work schedule or on my sense of control and authorship.”

I first came across this word while we were reading this essay in class called Why Collaborate by Ellen Lupton. As always I tried to use context clues to try to figure out what the word meant. Iv’e obviously heard the word author a million times but i have never heard of the word authorship. I split the word in half, I already knew what the word author meant but I couldn’t figure out what authorship meant. The first sentence did not make any sense to me because the author said that she loves to collaborate but she wants to work alone… As i continued to read she said it was a great idea as long as it doesn’t violate my personal work schedule or my sense of Control and authorship. Once i read the word control i kind of got a better understanding of the word authorship. I looked up the word in class and found out that they are very similar and are basically the same. Authorship is the state of being an author. I think that this is a great word that I can add to my vocabulary.

I believe this project will be pretty interesting because it focuses on problems in our world other than hurricanes, which are being mainly talked about in the media currently. There is a lot of controversy with these monuments weather they should be taken down or left alone. We get to learn about the monuments and form our own opinion. Another thing I am excited about is that we get to work with each other and get to build ideas together.

Hey my name is Sarique Headley and I am currently a freshman attending the New York College Of Technology. I recently graduated in June from James Madison High school and wanted to take a big step to brighten my future so i thought city tech would be the best option for a commuting college. In high school i wasn’t the type of person to do a lot of extra curricular activities. Also in high school i wasn’t the best student in terms of grades, i could of definitely gotten better grades if i took high school more seriously. Basically my grades were alright but they could of been a lot  better if i applied myself. The most i did for extra curricular was take a guitar class and we used perform shows for the students and parents. I used to have a strong passion for playing electric guitar back then but i just don’t have the time for it anymore.

My major is currently computer systems technology. I am currently am taking a remedial math class so i have a little bit more time to decide if i want to stay in the major i am taking or switch to another. I want to make the right decision so this predicament that i got myself into wasn’t bad after all. I originally wanted to take computer science or computer engineering but as you can see i am not that good in math… I apply myself but some things don’t come that natural to everyone. Some of my interests are watching Youtube Videos, buying Sneakers/Clothes, and playing Basketball.

I’ve been interested in this field for a long time. Computer systems was my backup major and it is actually pretty interesting. These fields are pretty similar so I am not that mad about it. I really like the fact that you can choose the specific areas in the major that you like. Hopefully this journey towards success will be a good one. I definitely will take college a lot more serious than high school. I honestly don’t know where ill be in 5 or 10 years, Predicting where you will be in that amount of time is really challenging and impossible, but i will definitely have my associates or bachelors degree but I guess well have to wait and see to find out.

My sign is Sagittarius and I think that is why i am so quiet and laid back. I picked this picture because i feel like it represents me the most. If you don’t know already this is the Sagittarius sign. I feel like if you first looked at the picture and didn’t already know what it was you would get an aggressive vibe from it, but that is not true. I love meeting new people but i am very quiet at times and it takes me a while to get used to people. I feel like the picture/sign is responsible for my personality. For example if you look up the sign people say that we are very independent, dependable, etc. People also say that we are very cold and don’t like to express our feelings… I feel like the picture relates to my personality and how i act.

As i was writing this profile i kind of got to see the type of person i am in a different look i guess. But overall i want to become a successful person in the future and i want to Always Strive and Prosper.

The word was found on the First page of the Guidelines for Blogging on the Openlab Packet, it is the first Title in Bold.

“Blog Frequency, Quantity, & Deadlines”

When i received the handout i immediately skimmed through the first page and saw the Bold title “Blog Frequency, Quantity, & Deadlines” I Definitely heard and knew what the word was but i just couldn’t think of a definition at the time. It was always one of those words that i knew but could never really define. I tried to read the rest of the page to see if i could figure it out on my own and i thought that the word was similar to persistence I was kind of correct at the time but i looked up the word to see for myself, i know know the true definition.
