stealing

In response to ā€œThe Plagiarist Tale,ā€ it explains the many authors who plagerize and take particular parts of other novels to incorporate to their literary works. However, for Quentin Rowan, it became an addiction and a ā€˜comfort blanketā€™ for writing novels. I thought it was interesting to read the life of Rowan and observe his process of taking pieces of other novels in his own because ā€˜the lifted paragraphs perfectly fit his narratives.ā€™ It was also interesting to read that Rowan had seen a psychiatrist for his plagiarism because it became out of hand, and how the psychiatrist related his addiction to plagiarism to being a pathological liar. However, he did not categorize himself as one; it was because his own work he organically wrote wasnā€™t getting the positive feedback he expected and no one was impressed. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but fully imitating someoneā€™s literary work can pay the price.

Copyright Laws

Copyright laws has set a standard of understanding that the hard work of one individual shouldnā€™t be stolen and taken advantage of by another. These laws were set in place in order to be sure that the provider of creativity receives all significant rights over all use of their work, but when does these rights go over board? We have all experienced hearing the news of a specific cooperation that has one millions of dollars due to strict copyright laws. Another example is downloading music. We all have downloaded something that is looked at as ā€œillegalā€. Everyone does it. I personally believe there should be come a point where if everyone is performing a specific act why should it even be considered illegal. The law isnā€™t being respected anyway.

Alternative Media

Some would ask what is considered Alternative media? In definition Alternative media is considered the alternative from mainstream media such as: Zines, pamphlets, blogs, wikis etc. Anything that is published with the purposed of delivering personal opinion to a mass of people is considered Alternative Media.
At times Alternative Media can be dangerous. If someone has a strong opinion on a specific topic which isnā€™t necessarily ethically or morally correct and creating a blog or zine expressing that passion. It can poison the minds of the weak or young creating propaganda. Depending on the demographic of the audience that is receiving the information being produced, researching the author producing this information is highly necessary. Alternative media is open for anyones self expression and not everything you read is necessarily correct.

Web 2.0

Web 2.0 has created a sense of engagement within the material that is being defined within the website. The purpose of creating this sense of engagement is to have a better grasp and understanding of the information.

In terms of interactivity of web sites and web material, using Web 2.0 is creating a chance of better understanding between the reader and the material. We all know that having a more hands on experience with information creates a greater chance in actually learning the material at hand.
How dangerous can all of this interaction possibly be? Blogging at times can be a bit too personal where we can be losing our sense of simple human to human interaction .We are being pushed to interact with the web. All of this web interaction can create a physiological effect taking away from our basic human instincts and normalities.

Convergence

Within the reading three common themes that were discussed were Convergence.

Ā  Ā The definition of convergence is the coming together of things that were previously separate. Within
the book there is more of an emphasis on more of the everyday uses of digital media such as: I
tunes, Google, Wiki etc. This leads to the usage of the term convergent media which refers to media
content, industries, technologies that are both practiced and networked.

The word convergence has been studied and analyze by many different people creating many different definitions. For example Klaus Bruhn Jensen describing convergence as a migration of communicative practices. Other authors have stressed convergence of computing.

Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Many different opinions on the actually definition has been expressed by many different
authors but simplified this seems to be the changes and separations found within media.

Non text media

Social media seems to be taking over the world. Now that people have so much access to social media they are using it as their best friend and confining in social media as a way of life. The amount of time people spend on social media on the day to day basis is almost equivalent to the amount of time we spend sleeping.Ā

Ā Apple realized and studied the amount of time spent on social media and used it to their advantage in marketing apple and it services and products. Their study was pureĀ genius. Why would they have created another software? Realizing the way the operating system on a computer has converged Apple created simple all in-one application in order to make thingsĀ simpler. Apple utilized that same aspect and applied it into their marketingĀ scheme.Ā

Ā Ā  As humans our thoughts evolve we become wiser we grow and hopefully become more
intelligent as the years go by. Apple has done just that, by understanding there customers need
for simplicity and portability and creating just that!
