homework#8- joey

Videos like a fairy tale use was great way to explain copy right laws.  The video is fun to watch but at times was difficult to listen, being that every word was read by different characters voices.  The video talked about that when something is copy righted we couldnt use it for our own benefit.  In the case they used disney characters to show how every movie made was copy righted and others couldnt use it to enhance or rewrite like walt disney did for most of his movies.  Something can be copy righted to death, then 70 years after.  This has become a huge problem in our culture,  this stops many new artist to be limited and not use the art that inspire them.  The law was to maintain money for the owner when in reality most used copy righted work except back then things would stop being copy righted after 25 years.  People need to realize that being greedy is affecting new artist and making it very difficult on them.

Homework #8

After watching the ” A Fair(y) Use Tale” it explains that a person can’t use a article or an idea with out credit till after it enters the public domain. Which can then be accessed by anyone. Now it would have to take a 100 years just to be put into the that domain some also may never enter the domain. I think that a 25 year limit would make more sense or at least to where that information is now a common knowledge amongst people. The thought will ever work especially in this day in age because people are more concerend in making money off anything they possible can instead of information being used freely by the public which all information is intended for. The argument to where you shouldn’t have to give credit to the writer/author shouldn’t be a big deal so a person has to write/type a few more words, that i think should be left as a rule since so many people would just use their ideas instead of their own.

I never knew copyrights had an expiration date. I always thought once something is copyright that’s it. The copyright is forever. Another thing I had the no idea of was the guidelines behind copyright laws. The guidelines are very strict. To think I could get in trouble for a using a few minutes a movie.  When if the use was for educational purposes. The video on fair use which used parts of Disney movies really makes a point of the fair use laws. Law does not allow much use of the movies, only a few clips.  Many people are outrage on the copyright and fair use laws. They said the laws are too strict and buts a stop on creativity. I could understand, but it not a big deal. I want to give people credit for having the ability to come up with ideas.

Copyright/ plagiarism- Miguel Olivares

The idea of copyrights is one I find very interesting. After watching the videos, I kept thinking back on two things from the previous class. The first was the idea that kaavya Viswanathan plagiarized her book. Part of me wants to believe that her explanation was legit. Maybe she did unknowingly write similar passages because she had read the novels back in high school. Then again, if she had read the novels more than once back and enjoyed them as much as she claimed, shouldn’t the similarities have become more obvious?.  After the lecture and the videos, I did some research and found that its estimated that 85% of all work published in the U.S between 1923-1963 is now in the public domain. That seems like a really high figure and it makes me wonder whether it’s because the publishers want to share their work or because they deem it not worth the trouble to copyright.

The videos that were posted were very informative on copyright laws. It definitely gave me a better understands and more knowledge towards the actual law itself. Before viewing the video I did not know that dancing can have a copyright law. It really showed me that pretty much anything creative can be copyrighted. I believe however, that copyright should have a limit and that people should not be able to have copyright after their death. The videos explain the reasoning to this and that is because companies own copyright to peoples ideas that help them make money as well. A great example from one of the videos was Walt Disney. Walt Disney has been deceased for many years however, his memory and creativity lives on through the company walt disney. I think if there was a limitation to how long something can be copyrighted, it would create more value because nothing can beat the originality. If the material is that good or entertaining where it causes demand, then it will still be lucrative in itself.

The three videos were absolutely informative, entertaining, and thought-provoking. I loved the use of all the various Disney movies in “A Fair(y) Use Tale” by Eric Faden, it kept me interested throughout the entire thing and explained the idea of copyrighting. As for how long someone can copyright something, I believe that it is absolutely preposterous to a certain extent. While watching, “Copyright: Forever Less One Day” by Lessig, I noticed that the longevity of the copyright keeps the originality of these great works. Everyone always says the first one is always the best, so why mess with them; possibly changing the original writer’s idea. Copyright does prevent others creativity but also keeps the originality of the work.

Homework 7.

Copyright: Forever Less One Day

Was a very interesting article. Because some of this stuff is really new to me? 1710 was when the first form of copyright was. It gave control to authors on who was allowed to make and print copy’s of their work. I tend to think copyright laws are good, because now you cant use titles and movies of things unless that author or director lets you……..  an example of this would Be J.k Rowlings Harry Potter Series. Another great ex, is George Lucas’s Star Wars, even though his copyright ended, its still going. This is because it was Re-Released so many times, due to squeals, Dvd versions, Blue Ray/Special Editions, Etc. Some stuff you can use like Romeo And Juilet, you can use that but just have to make it your own works.  Like i said before the copyright laws are good but could be alittle more inforced/stricter. Some people are clueless as to if there infringing copyright, like the girl from the video in class basically stole lines from her favorite book series, then lied and said she didnt know, and that it was inspired by her favorite books. She Basically lied.

Copyright was defined as a “contract between authors and society” in the video Copyright: Forever less one day. This law of copyright was constructed in 1710 , here society can not copy from any authors work or remake it for they have control over their work for a limited time (25 years). I understood better for what copyright law meant when the example of wanting to remake the harry potter book, this book was published in 1998 having copyright protection which can not be used yet for any remaking. This was a good idea because it gives the right of authors to control over what they have done, & giving them also the privilege to keep their recent work out there for a limited a time before any other author wishes to remake it.
