Today we discussed standards, methods and styles for citing text and non-text media. Slides from today are available here. We will continue our discussion of documentation on Wednesday with a discussion of the practical applications of documentation.

Your assignment for Wednesday is the draft of the research paper, either handed in at the beginning of class or emailed to me as an attachment by 10 a.m. on 11/28. I will post the guidelines for the final version of the research paper on the site later today and distribute paper copies in class on Wednesday.

As a non writer this is continually a difficult process, there is so much to read and digest, that must then be turned into something informative but not being “regurgitated”. I have made slow progress, this is a a very heavy writing term for me. Conveniently, searching for information and using libraries is nothing new for me, im quite sure its the only reason why i’m still surviving this class. Knocking out this paper and a passing grade in the class will allow me to de-stress , that is, until next semester starts. I like to think that a topic as dynamic as mines is helps because theres always something new going on. An example is a recent email facebook uses have been sent regarding policy.

I normally use Google scholar or the database provided by the college, when doing a research paper.  I regularly use Yahoo as my main search engine due to the fact that I find it to be helpful and very easy to navigate and getting my ideas together.  In general I find that most search engines (i.e. Google, Bing, Explorer etc.) are not reliable.   At the times it is unknown who is providing the information. Let alone if the person is knowledgeable in the field.  As for scholarly sources, it is reviewed by experts in their field of study.  One of the problems I encounter while searching on Google scholar is that some the scholarly sources have to be purchase.

Citing information is important and necessary for several reasons and one of them being the most impotant, to me, is acknowledgment for the author. While reading a excerpt from Howard, Hot Type: A Modern Scholar’s Ailments: Link Rot and Footnote Flight, I realized that there are many reasons one should cite informatiom, that are all equivelantly important. Cititng reliable sources also validates conclusions that are made or presumed. We can not state facts that can not be supported by proper research. quality should also be considered when citing  source.
