Project 2 – Primary and Secondary Packaging Design

PROJECT 2 – PRIMARY & SECONDARY PACKAGING DESIGN

Dates:

Start: October 5th, 2021.

Hand in: Tuesday November 9th, 2021. (TBD in person or online)

Objective: Research, define and design primary and secondary packaging of tea following a brief.

Materials needed:

  • 1 Small 20 pack tea box. Any brand, any flavor. (Around $3).
  • 1 Tea bag of same brand and flavor of box chosen.
  • 1 Bristol board 14x17in or larger.
  • 1 Black pencil.
  • Eraser.
  • Scissors.
  • Triangle and ruler.
  • Double sided tape.
  • X-acto knife or utility knife and blades.
  • Double Tack – Double sided adhesive film (for Step 4 > Deliver)

Phone or camera, sketch book, color pencils, watercolors, markers or any other drawing tools you may choose. Computer.

Technical Skills: Thumbnail sketching, color drafting, digital imaging. Illustrator and Photoshop programs.

Design Process:

Step 1 > Discover

Step 2 > Define

Step 3 > Develop

Step 4 > Deliver

Step 1 > Discover

Make a trip to the store of your preference and buy a tea box.

Observe the whole tea section. Take pictures and analyze shelf impact. Standing a couple of feet apart from the gondola, see if the box of your choice stands out from other brands or blends within the section. Is the flavor recognizable from a distance?. What’s working? What’s not working? Which brand is the one that stands out? Why?.

Analyze how is positioned on shelf or wall. Is it horizontal? Vertical? Piled up? How many facings?.

Think about packaging materials and finishes used in the tea section. Look at the use of images.

Evaluate recyclability, reusability, sustainability, biodegradability. Research about new materials that could be applied to this project.

Post to the Class Blog:

• Under Categories (on right hand side), choose “Project 2- Step 1 > Research & Discover”. Post your images.

  • Upload the images of the tea section and the tea you bought.
  • Write about shelf impact. Explain what works and what doesn’t.
  • Don’t forget to spell-check and grammar-check.

Step 2 > Define

Choose (1) your target audience between the options below:

  • Animal lovers
  • Tech people
  • Artists
  • Environmentalists

Write a description of your target consumer.

Make a detail description imagining your chosen consumer. Who is that person? What kind of activities does, personality, style, age. What do they care about, etc.

Sketch to size the shape of label/s and packaging on a page. Always thinking what would grab your consumer’s attention.

In Illustrator create the die line of your primary and secondary packaging following the actual shape and size of your package.

Sketch different ideas actual size on printed die lines.

Step 3 > Develop

We will be constructing a tea box prototype and die line in class.

Follow steps:

  1. Disassemble the box and carefully without braking it.
  2. Flatten it face up on a 14x17in (or larger) Bristol board and tape it to the board with double sided tape.
  3. With a pencil trace all around the border. Make a mark where the foldings are. Folding lines need to be dotted lines.
  4. Do the same with the tea pouch and tag.
  5. Take measurements of all parts of flattened box, pouch and tag and write them down.
  6. Take a picture. You will need all this info to re-create the die in Illustrator.
  7. Looking at “3 Common Types of Boxes” in OpenLab class site, under P2, determine which kind of folding carton is the one you are working with.
  8. Cut and tape neatly the box die and fold it following folding lines, taping the parts needed with double sided tape.
  9. On Illustrator make all 3 dyelines needed for you project. Tea box, tea pouch and tag.
  10. Print the die lines to sketch different ideas actual size.

Once finished the design development step, Based on peers and instructor’s critique, refine both primary and secondary packaging design. proceed to make the final prototypes.

For the Tea box: Use Double Tack to mount careful and evenly your printed design on Bristol. Cut first and help yourself with a triangle to fold the box panels.

For the tea pouch: Use the printed design to make the pouch by cutting first and folding and mounting the sides after

For the tag: Use Double Tack to mount careful and evenly your printed design on Bristol, cut and fold last.

Post to the Class Blog. Under Categories (on right hand side), choose “Project 2- Step 3 > Develop”. Post your images.

  • Upload design sketches.
  • Write a description of your target consumer.
  • Don’t forget to spell-check and grammar-check.

Step 4 > Deliver

Present in class. Hand in uploading to your Dropbox:

> Color printed mechanical die lines ai file CMYK of your primary and secondary package design actual size. Adobe Illustrator or pdf layered files.

> Bring to class color prototypes actual size of your primary and secondary designed packaging.  Tea box, pouch and tag. Upload in Dropbox a photo of your prototypes (primary and secondary packaging) previously described.

> Write, print and upload a description of your target consumer.

> Upload to your Dropbox folder all files listed above. Name all files of your project following naming guide on OpenLab.

• Be prepared to present, discuss and talk about your finished work in terms of design process, concept, craft and what you’ve learned.

• State your name, what you are presenting, which parts are successful and why, which parts are unsuccessful and why.

• Your peers and the professor will provide feedback.

Post to the Class Blog:

Uploading all work process and commenting on peer work also is part of your 15% participation grade.

  • Under Categories (on right hand side), choose “Project 2- Step 4 > Deliver”. Post your a photograph of all prototypes (jpg/png format). Name them accordingly.
  • Write explaining your full design project and process.
  • Don’t forget to spell-check and grammar-check.
