PROJECT 3 – A RANGE DESIGN

Start: November 9th, 2021.

Hand in: Tuesday December 14th, 2021. Online Zoom Class

Objective: To design a range of 3 different flavors of bar soap packaging inspired by the concept of “Singing in the shower.”

Materials needed:

  • Printed die line. Download from OpenLab class website under Project 3 > Die line of primary package wrapper.
  • Black pencil.
  • Eraser.
  • Scissors.
  • Triangle and ruler.
  • Double tack and/or double sided tape.
  • X-acto knife or utility knife and blades.
  • Cutting board.
  • Images (from magazines or internet) to create a Concept Board.

Phone or camera, sketch book, color pencils, watercolors, markers or any other drawing tools you may choose. Illustrator, Photoshop.

Technical Skills: Thumbnail sketching, color drafting, digital imaging. Illustrator and/or Photoshop programs.

Design Process:

Step 1 > Research & Discover

Step 2 > Define

Step 3 > Develop

Step 4 > Deliver

Step 1 > Discover

Make a trip to the store of your preference, search and analyze the personal hygiene isle.

Observe the whole bar soap section. Analyze how is positioned on shelf. Is it horizontal? Vertical? Piled up? How many facings?. Take pictures and evaluate shelf impact. Standing a couple of feet apart from the gondola, which brand’s packaging is the  one that stands out from other brands or blends within the section. Are flavors recognizable from a distance?. What’s working? What’s not working? Which brand is the one that stands out? Why?.

Think about packaging materials and finishes used in the personal hygiene section. Look at the colors and use of photography, images, illustration techniques, etc.

Evaluate recyclability, reusability, sustainability, biodegradability. Research about new materials that could be applied to this packaging.

Post to the Class Website, under Categories (on right hand side), choose “Project 3- Step 1 > Research & Discover”. Post your images.

  • Upload the images of the bar soap section you’ve researched.
  • Write about shelf impact. Explain what works and what doesn’t.
  • Don’t forget to spell-check and grammar-check.

Step 2 > Define

Thinking about the widespread habit of singing in the bath or shower. Write about your research and discovery.

Why do people sing in the shower? What are the emotions connected to singing in the shower?. What does the experience of bathing brings? What are the cultural, social and religious meanings of bathing? Is there a spiritual, psychological feeling? Physical? Is it a pleasant experience? A happy one? Or…? Is it a ritual? Habit? Necessity?

Define a target audience and search which music would that person like to sing or listen to when in the shower.

Which one is the music? Are there fragrances, textures connected with this experience?

Make a detail description imagining your chosen consumer and the music that target audience would select for singing or listening in the shower.

Who is that person? What kind of activities does, personality, style, age. What do they care about, etc.

Once defined your target audience and music, choose either 3 songs, 3 music styles to design a promotional range of 3 bar soap boxes inspired in singing in the shower.

Step 3 > Develop

Develop a concept board. Capture in a collage (digital or made with paper/mix media) color images that represent your consumer, the emotions, mood, scents and elements to capture the feeling of singing in the shower the songs chosen.

Create a concept board with images and words that conceive your concept behind the 3 flavor bar soap designs. Not smaller than 11x17in.

This concept board should be inspiring, creative and should give a clear reference of the concept behind the design. Think that you are presenting this Concept Board to the Marketing Team that has no imagination or visual reference of your ideas.
