Be open minded

To whom it may concern,

Being the this class made me look at Brooklyn totally different. Before I came to this college I thought the college was located in Manhattan. I hadn’t made too much research on my college I just knew I was accepted and that was it. When I found out it was located in Brooklyn , I didn’t like it at first. I had a bad image of Brooklyn, I thought it was a bad city. When my professor Rosen told me we had to walk around the college and see a place that interested us that was near the college, I didn’t like the idea at first. I was used to coming out of college and going straight home. But as soon as I started walking around I started to notice the city was beautiful, i was looking at a totally different image of Brooklyn, like the unknown part of Brooklyn . I never imagine viewing this city the way I was looking at it for the first time. It had its nice view of the east river, I could see the tall and colorful buildings. I saw people eating outside of the restaurants I enjoying the view the city had to offer us. Like the saying goes “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” I learned that wit his city of Brooklyn. And after they told us to go visit the place where we choose to talk about in our persuasive speech , I didn’t have a clue where the Brooklyn bridge was. I had a friend that had to guide me towards the bridge. That shows I was really new to the city. My friend told me it was easy to walk towards the bridge but I still wasn’t sure on how to get there. So he walked me there, when I got there I was amazed on seeing such a breathtaking view. I hadn’t imagine seeing the bridge, the way I seeing it was. It showed me I need to explore the world more. My advice to any student sitting in my seat next year is, be opened minded, give this city a I chance to inspire you in your life. That’s what I learned in this opportunity that was given to me.

Letter to Future Student

Dear future student, the learning community is great for freshman. I found that the course was much easier and helpful than my other classes since it is designed for new students. Especially since Professor davis and Professor Rosen are so helpful to the class. In the Being in Brooklyn course you will learn many new skills to improve your writing. It was also helpful for me spending one on one time with Professor Rosen going over my work for improvement, which i suggest you do. The course focuses on Brooklyn. The readings and essays you will be writing are all about Brooklyn, so if you are not from here you will become really familiar with Brooklyn. I also learned a lot in speech class about how to give an organized speech which will be very useful to you throughout college and later on in life. If You are a shy person like i am you will not be comfortable at first but that changes over time. Do not stress over this like i did, which effected my grade in a negative way. Especially since professor Davis is a really friendly and tries to make you feel comfortable. During the semester we took two trips to the Brooklyn Historical Society. We learned many things and had access to Brooklyn history. On our way there we had a walking tour which was a great way for us to learn about the neighborhood. Especially for those of us who are not from Brooklyn. My advice to you is to take advantage of the opportunities these two courses offer. The two trips to the Brooklyn Historical Society are a great experience and you should attend them. Also, speech class offers you a chance to come out of your shell and loose the fear of speaking in front of large groups of people. This was the number one improvement i have made since coming to college because of speech class. I hope that you enjoy these two classes and have a positive experience like i did.

Letter-Advice for students

Dear upcoming students,

What comes to mind when you see the title Being in Brooklyn? Maybe it means how life is in Brooklyn or maybe looking deeply in Brooklyn right? Since our college is in Brooklyn it doesn’t mean you know everything about it, but after taking these two classes you will feel you were raised here and you know every single thing about it. In these two classes Effective Speaking (Professor Davis) and English 1101 ( Professor Rosen) you will be seeing new sites that you never saw or knew about in Brooklyn and learning so many new things about Brooklyn. I myself didn’t know that much but now I can tell Brooklyn is a more enjoyable borough then Queens. You will also get to know your fellow classmates since both classes are combined classes. You will learn a lot about places like The Brooklyn Bridge, Dumbo, Columbus park, Brooklyn Historical Society etc.  The professors also take you on a walking tour around City Tech which was really fun because I got to see many new things and landmarks I never saw before. The work that you would do like essays and summaries are posted here on Open Lab so there cant be any excuse that your ink ran out. Just kidding its better posting it here then wasting paper. I would recommend that you guys should do your work and not procrastinate a lot because it will be a burden on you since you we have 5 projects to complete in English class. In Effective Speaking you will be doing a few speeches and your fear of talking in front of a class will be gone because its the same students in both classes and hopefully you all will be friends with each other. The professors are great and you will have a great time with them. If you are having a problem you can contact them and they will help you out with something. Well I hope you guys have a good time in these classes.

Advice for future students

Get ready to explore the great opportunities that you will observe in Brooklyn. I know when you hear about Brooklyn, it may seem boring. but it really isn’t. You can find so many interesting things. There are tons of sight-seeing adventures you can go with your families and friends. Unlike Queens or Bronx there aren’t much places you get to see. So why not visit Brooklyn. You will get a lot research that you guys have to work on. Both of these classes Effective Speaking and English 1101 (Prof. Davis & Prof. Rosen) are great classes. You will have the most amazing time within these two classes. In English, you will get to learn sources, summaries, and how to interpret essays. I mean hey its college might as well get used to it. The one thing I recommend you guys to do is when you get projects you guys should start it the first day because there are outlines and drafts that are due within a day or so earlier after the due date. One great experience I had was when our whole class went on the Walking Tour around City Tech. It was really fun and amazing. Professors took you to the places where you have never been to before. For effective speaking, you will get over the fear of talking in front of a group of people. You will have to do a few speeches that is part of the course and theirs only 2 exams. This class was pretty fun and interesting. the speeches were actually a motivation for us to do better and get over our fear. I mean I did it, but I still need to improve a little bit more. Good Luck and Enjoy!

Advice to incoming student

To the incoming student:
Before talking about the class, I want to tell you an equation, college student is equal an adult. When you are a college student, people expect you are responsible and knowing what to do. Therefore, the excuse that you used in high school is not so useful at the college anymore. Grow up, guys.
As a freshman, I feel lucky I have this class. I live in Manhattan five years since I move in New York; and I never step out of my bubble. “Being in Brooklyn” really gives me a new vantage point of New York. You can learn more about the Downtown Brooklyn, the new environment, and learn how to give your school life more color. As a new student, you might have a problem that no friends from your old high school have the same class with you. Yes, this is the problem I have at the beginning of the class, but now, no more. Since you have same classmates in both Speech and English class, you can meet new friends, chatting with them at that 15 minutes break. When God makes time, it makes plenty of it, so use that time.
If you want me to rate this course, I think it will be nine out of ten. So where does that one point go? It probably the speech and the Open lab; personally, I do like speech, and I don’t like to use computer to do the daily homework, because the computer is always distract me. So if you cannot bear that temptation as I did, I suggest you to open another account on your computer, with icon of Microsoft word only. Do not miss any assignment, not matter how small percentage they are, it still have power to affect your grade at the end. More importantly, DO NOT ABSENCE, because more than four absences, you cannot take you final test; and you if fail your final test, congratulation, you have to take the same course again.
Hoping you enjoy this class, and gain a good grade.

Sincerely,
Student in fall 2013

A piece of advice for freshmens

Dear Incoming students,

One of the course which is required to take in college in ENG 1101. This course enhances your ability to write essays, summaries, read different texts etc. As we all know the reality that college is not easy. But one can get lucky by getting enrolled in a learning community during their first semester which by taking ENG 1101 & SPE 1330. Starting of a fresh new life in college and hearing that your class title is actually “Being in Brooklyn” might seem pretty boring at first especially when you are from another neighborhood. But as we all know we should never judge a book by its cover. This class is designed in such a way that incoming freshmen students who have no knowledge about the neighborhood get the chance to know it in a pretty deep way. One of the most important thing to do in this course is to actually go out on a walk and find a place which excities and thrills you from inside  in learning more about that place. This is the most important thing in both the classes because the word “location” is going to come back and forth almost every other day in the classes. Picking up different locations, changing your location frequently might give you a very hard time during the semester. The best idea is to stick with one in which you are interested and stay focused. A lot of time is given to choose the location and a lot of opportunities are provided by both the professors. Giving out stories on places in Brooklyn, reading articles on place in Brooklyn, a tour with class near the campus, a library session with the whole class is done and many different things to help you out. One good thing about the class is that nothing is due to once everything has a deadline which gives you heads up that how you should plan on your schedule. Never plan on doing the paper a night before because you will end up screwing yourself. Try to stay in touch by asking them to look over your work by an email. Lastly, never ever hesitate asking help about anything because both Prof Rosen and Davis are very kind and generous. They are always ready with a solution to help you no matter what your problem is about.

Letter of Advice

Location? That is a word you should be getting used to as you begin your semester as a member of this Eng 1101 Course. This Eng 1101 course revolves around certain locations in which you will further expand your knowledge on them so that you can be able to further expand your reading and writing skills. The process of it all is very overwhelming since you will have to do things you wouldn’t normally do in your other classes. These things include going out and searching for a location that catches your eye and doing research on it for a project, taking photographs on your own instead of using Google as your source. Here’s more advice, the writing isn’t particularly difficult but don’t wait until the last minute to try and finish your work. This course consists of a lot of preparation and thinking on all projects. As long as the work is completed on time you shall be fine. One new thing that you can look forward to is blogging. Before this course, i had never in my life written a blog post and now at the end of the course, i can say i have written more than enough. Towards the end of the semester, you might feel the urge to not give it your all since focusing on the same location over and over again can be tiring but that won’t be the best choice. You have to find something new that interest you so that you can finish the course out strong. One thing would be varying locations if you’re able to so that way you won’t get tired of writing about the same place over and over again. That’s something i wish i could have know at the beginning. The last piece of advice is to bring some creativity to this course as well as a positive attitude. It is an enjoyable course as it opens up your thinking box and revolves it around locations that surround us in our everyday life.
