On Thursday 19th, a speech was hosted in City Tech, for extra credit Professor Davis gave us a list of things we could do for extra points. The list consisted of setting up the rooms for the competitors, to participate in the competition, or show up for the final round and write about it. Professor Davis encouraged us to participate in the competition and that if we managed to make it to the final round, an unholy amount of street credit was promised. My schedule did not permit me to be part of the competition because it first began at 12:15pm and my first class does not end until 12:45pm. I was lucky enough to make it to help my classmates with whatever they needed to set up and spectate the speakers. After the first round we were called to room 10-03 for refreshments. There most of the Competition Coordinators congratulated those who went and participated in the competition. The final round was said to start at around 3:00pm and was supposed to end, I couldn’t take part in that event because I had an upcoming class at 2:30pm which finished at 3:45pm even though I wasn’t able to earn all the extra credit I’m satisfied that Professor Davis even offered a chance for extra credit.

Summary – 10/28/13
Since it was a double session for both classes, we observed other students give presentation including myself. We learned about many places and their historical background. After everyone finished giving their presentation. We were informed about how important it is to register for you classes for the spring semester. Professor David explained of the importance to plan ahead, to think of what classes you are required to take, and what classes not to. He explain we should review the classes we want with our advisor. After that announcement, we were told, the students that went up today for presentation should go check on Openlab to check out their video of how they did in their presentation and to afterwards fill out their informative speech self evaluation. The students who didn’t bring those sheets in weren’t going to receive back their grade for their presentation. We were also told by Professor Rosen to make sure we answer one of the 3 question she wrote and to answer in a summary. We have to read “Reading Lucy”, at the end Professor Davis said, it would be a “good idea” to start reading chapter 9.
Speaking class summary on 10/23
On October 23, in the Speaking class, we first got our test scores back and then we start to talk about the visual aid. There are few important things we need to concern when we doing a visual aid or powepoint for our project. First, on PowerPoint, we should not distract the audience; and tip to keep the audiences’ attention off the screen is to show them a blank slide. The second thing is about how you choose your pictures, we should not choose a pictures that’ve is too busy, which means not too many things on the same picture, because the audiences cannot get the information from it. It is bad if you cannot send your message to the audiences. And the third thing we need to keep in mind is to show where your source come from, to make youspeech more creditable. The last thing is try not to use the completed sentences, but use short phase or word to send your message.

Summary For SPE
On Tuesday October 15, 2013 we went to the Brooklyn historical Society. While in the Brooklyn Historical Society we were given clear instructions on how to handle the maps because they were very delicate, that we were to point on the maps with our finger not with a pencil, not to hold up the maps, we were asked to leave our bag packs in a small place to avoid any undesired disasters, and lastly to treat the materials with respect. Groups were asked to look at maps that depicted how Brooklyn looked in the past, we also had to answer some questions about those maps in a handout that was given to us. Right towards the end of class Prof. Davis surprised us with an announcement, he stated that we were to create a speech based on the maps and that we had about 15 minutes to do it, the speeches overall were great and were presented professionally to the audience. In the end we heard some feedback from both Prof. Davis and Prof. Rosen that help us become better speakers and departed from there.

Summary of SPE Class-10-16-13
Today in Effective speaking class Professor Davis let us do peer review on our outline that was due today. We were supposed to review for the midterm but we did that instead. He told us that the midterm is gonna be on Monday and it will consist of 35 multiple choice questions and 15 true and false questions. It will cover chapters one through six. In the peer review we had it helped a lot we got to work one and one with a classmate and they gave you back a feedback on your outline. Like if it needed more details or if something is missing. Also if you wanted prof. Davis gave you a feedback too that even helped more and made it more clearer on what else you needed in your outline. Then he decided since we didn’t review for the midterm today we can review on Monday morning from 9-10. You have to meet him in his office before 9 which is located in A-630 and then we will go review in another room. The last thing we did was he passed around a sheet of paper that had our names and what day we had to go for the speech either 10-28 or 10-30. On 10-28 we have a double session of effective speaking so more people will be going on that day rather on the 30th.
Summary of BHS
On Monday our class went to a small field trip to know and learn of many places including the BHS. While we walked we came upon a really big court house. Prof. Rosen explained to us that that court house was once a big movie theatre but sadly it burned out. We learned that there were only 2 main exits thus, the people couldn’t get out on time. There we about 300 bodies found the next day! Then we crossed the street and saw a statue of Henry Ward Beecher. He looked so brave and with his eyes straight forward like if he was someone very important. there were Also kids trying to reach out to him like if he was their only hope. That’s when prof. Rosen explained to use that he was a very important preacher who use to help slaves. He received a lot of hate from people for trying to help slaves but many people use to cross on boats from Manhattan to Brooklyn just to listen to him. We also saw one of the church that he used to preach at. We also walked up to the edge of Brooklyn were we observed from across all of Manhattan. We was even able to see the Statue of Liberty. Lastly, we visited the BHS. it was very pretty and historic. There were heads of very important people surrounding the building. When we went to their library it was quite unique. Gladly I got to see these things in person not only through pictures. Its always better to see things in person that can see many more details that in a picture is not visible.
Speech Class Summary 9/23/13
On 9/23/13 we were given a topic which was the “Importance of Good Hygiene” and we had to construct a speech to target the audience we were assigned. We were allowed 7 minutes to prepare for the speech and Prof. Davis has written down comments on our evalution sheets. We will get these sheets back tomorrow to see what we need to work on as a public speaker.
