Project #5- Summary

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the beautiful landmarks in New York. Built by so many workers with so much hard work this bridge is the one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. According to the World Steel Association it’s the first steel wire bridge ever built in the whole world. It is 1,595 feet long. The designer of this bridge John Roebling died because of a foot injury which leaded to an infection. His son Washington Roebling then took over the work but unfortunately died later on also from a disease. This bridge stands out to most attractive tourist sites in New York. There have been many stories of people who jumped from the bridge. Films have also been shot on the bridge. Giorgio Pessi piloted a Caproni Ca.5 under the bridge. The bridge has also had anniversary celebrations which held for about 5 days. Many American poets also use to Brooklyn Bridge in their poetry. As of being New Yorkers we should have some knowledge of the bridge and of other famous historical buildings our states has. We should also go visit these historical areas instead of leaving them abandoned and also enjoy the beauty our state has.

Project 4 – Brooklyn Bridge Park

The Brooklyn Bridge Park has a lot to offer from its very rich history surrounding to its lush family friendly parks and activities you can do now. The Brooklyn Bridge park is one of the nicest parks in Brooklyn and is a popular spot to go to for people of all ages around the year. With that being said Brooklyn Bridge Park is becoming very popular and there are many things to tell about the park that a lot of people might not know about.

The Brooklyn Bridge Park has a very rich history. In 1742 the first ferry landing opened on the land that is now the Brooklyn Bridge Park’s empire ferry sections. On August 1776 it also served as a important and crucial strategic point for George Washington and the Continental army in the Revolutionary War. When the 18th century came to a close even more ferry services were made and added to the waterfront community. One of these ferry landings were made by Robert Fulton and became known as the Fulton ferry landing. As this water front community continued to grow it developed what is now known as Brooklyn heights as a residential area. By the 1850’s Brooklyn city railroad lines were added to the Fulton ferry landing to help with better and more smoother transportation of goods from the landing to warehouses that stored these goods. In the 1950’s over 130 total warehouses and 25 finger piers were unfortunately demolished along Brooklyn’s waterfront. This was done in order to accommodate for larger ships and larger cargo that were being delivered to the piers. The New York Dock Company built 13 new larger piers to accommodate for these larger ships and cargo, and this was done from 1956-1964. At its peak, the New York Dock Co. owned or managed over 40 piers and approximately 150 stores and warehouses, making it the largest private freight terminal in the world. But in the 1950’s shipping in the area began a steady decline in use because of competition. By the late 1970’s Piers1-6 were warehouses and generating revenues for the Port Authority. This development includes piers 1-3 and piers 5-6 of what is now currently Brooklyn Bridge Park. Pier 2 was not developed until 1958. However as technology advanced so did trade routes and because of this by 1970 Brooklyn’s water front developments were largely barren and decrepit causing the port authority to close down the waterfronts operation in 1983. Many of these warehouses and piers were demolished, but by the end of the 20th century however, the warehouses on the piers compromising Brooklyn Bridge Park were not demolished until the parks opening in 2010.

Since then the Park has grown immensely located at 334 Furman Street with 85 acres of land and a 1.3-mile water front there are now there are 6 separate piers in which many travel everyday as you can see right now so many people here. The Park now features things such as sand volleyball courts, bicycle and running paths, a dog run, a boat launch where they give free kayaking lessons and a pool. These activities become really popular when the summer strikes, so remember when the weather gets warmer you can come here and enjoy it to the maximum. All provided with a spectacular view of the New York City skyline. The Park also provides over 400 free activities throughout the year ranging from performance arts and fitness classes to children’s education programs to performance arts and fitness classes. The park is a getaway from all of Downtown Brooklyn’s gray buildings with beautiful scenery and green hills, colorful playgrounds and now a pool. It is the perfect place to visit on a hot summer day with a picnic basket and bathing suit or a walk through during the fall or winter. It serves as a year round attraction for its people of Brooklyn and others who wish to visit each year.

Some things about the Brooklyn Bridge Park might not be so good and may be something that a lot of people would want to forget. Hurricane Sandy struck the Northeastern United States also hitting Brooklyn Bridge Park In an article by the New York Times, The author described the hurricanes attack on the park. “Winds toppled a few trees, but most survived, and the railings, benches, and posts were unscathed. But in exceeding the projected 100-year storm-water surge by nearly two feet, Sandy ruined most of the waterfront park’s electrical system.” The park did stand up to the Hurricane that caused absolute damage to neighborhoods. That was just one of the problems that the park had to endure, years before there was a debate on housing that was being planned by the park. This hurricane also caused problems for many people looking to build apartments along the Brooklyn Bridge Park.  People didn’t want  housing to go up because they didn’t feel like it would be a park anymore. Others felt that it gave the park a sense of life. Many believed it was going to be viewed as an industrial site instead of a city park. With the building of housing some believed that it would be a great addition and the project is now scheduled to begin during the fall of 2015.

Brooklyn Bridge Park is one of Brooklyn’s most beautiful places to visit and see. Its rich history mixed with its urban environment makes it a very popular tourist destination. Its also close to a very nice neighborhood in Brooklyn Heights. The park has been through a lot in its history but its all turned out for the best.

Extra Credit – Speech Competition

On Thursday 19th, a speech was hosted in City Tech, for extra credit Professor Davis gave us a list of things we could do for extra points. The list consisted of setting up the rooms for the competitors, to participate in the competition, or show up for the final round and write about it. Professor Davis encouraged us to participate in the competition and that if we managed to make it to the final round, an unholy amount of street credit was promised. My schedule did not permit me to be part of the competition because it first began at 12:15pm and my first class does not end until 12:45pm. I was lucky enough to make it to help my classmates with whatever they needed to set up and spectate the speakers. After the first round we were called to room 10-03 for refreshments. There most of the Competition Coordinators congratulated those who went and participated in the competition. The final round was said to start at around 3:00pm and was supposed to end, I couldn’t take part in that event because I had an upcoming class at 2:30pm which finished at 3:45pm even though I wasn’t able to earn all the extra credit I’m satisfied that Professor Davis even offered a chance for extra credit.

Class Summary Speech, 10/4

On October 4th, in the class Speech-1330 taught by Professor Davis, was the day of the speech midterm. Which to my surprise was a documented multiple choice exam because I was expecting The Midterm consisted of questions in chapters 1-6 of the textbook. The test was a bit rough for me because I was not ready for the way Professor Davis worded the answer choices and I think I could speak for a good portion of the class. I must admit thought I didn’t spend too much time studying and I ended up biting the bullet. But, Professor Davis, being the nice guy that he is, sees that the entire class average was a mere 49% decided to boost everyone’s test grade by 20 points because he saw that the entire class was putting in a respectable amount of work into our class blog. When I was finished I caught up with people who had already finished the test and almost everyone said that the wording answer choices were the biggest problem and were the most confusing. In conclusion, my speech midterm was on October 4th and it surely caught me off guard along with some of my friends but thanks to Professor Davis boosting our grade by 20 points I had a better grade than I would’ve hope for.

Letter-Advice for students

Dear upcoming students,

What comes to mind when you see the title Being in Brooklyn? Maybe it means how life is in Brooklyn or maybe looking deeply in Brooklyn right? Since our college is in Brooklyn it doesn’t mean you know everything about it, but after taking these two classes you will feel you were raised here and you know every single thing about it. In these two classes Effective Speaking (Professor Davis) and English 1101 ( Professor Rosen) you will be seeing new sites that you never saw or knew about in Brooklyn and learning so many new things about Brooklyn. I myself didn’t know that much but now I can tell Brooklyn is a more enjoyable borough then Queens. You will also get to know your fellow classmates since both classes are combined classes. You will learn a lot about places like The Brooklyn Bridge, Dumbo, Columbus park, Brooklyn Historical Society etc.  The professors also take you on a walking tour around City Tech which was really fun because I got to see many new things and landmarks I never saw before. The work that you would do like essays and summaries are posted here on Open Lab so there cant be any excuse that your ink ran out. Just kidding its better posting it here then wasting paper. I would recommend that you guys should do your work and not procrastinate a lot because it will be a burden on you since you we have 5 projects to complete in English class. In Effective Speaking you will be doing a few speeches and your fear of talking in front of a class will be gone because its the same students in both classes and hopefully you all will be friends with each other. The professors are great and you will have a great time with them. If you are having a problem you can contact them and they will help you out with something. Well I hope you guys have a good time in these classes.

Summary of Project #4

Dumbo has the New York City’s highest concentration of technology. This place is a beautiful place. You can see a lot of old buildings there and more narrower streets that they had long time ago. You can find many things their. You can find the Brooklyn Bridge Park their. There’s also the merry go round where kids can go and ride on it. Dumbo has art galleries and boutiques, restaurants and cafes. There are super markets there as well but they are a pretty pricey. When you go to the park you can see the beautiful skyline above the city. You would see The Brooklyn Bridge on one side and the Manhattan Bridge on the other side. There is a water ferry that goes from the other side of the ocean to the other end of the ocean. The area that eventually became Dumbo often used to be referred to as the Bridges that I have mentioned earlier. The landmarks included almost the whole neighborhood in what it is called now is Dumbo Historic District. Overall this area is still known to so many people. A lot of people go their just so they can relax and enjoy the whole view and the calm environment especially during the summer time.

Summary of Projec#4

Fulton Street is named after a successful business man, Robert Fulton, who own a monopoly steam ferries business. And two streets linked with the ferries are called Fulton Street. Although the monopoly business did not exist now, the monopolistic businesses still continued on the Brooklyn Fulton. From the past century, there are plenty of retail stores along Fulton Street; it is a successful economic model to the local African Americans. However, Fulton Street recently moves to the next step. Because of its fantastic transportation, attracting thousands of visitors a day, Fulton is no longer a market place for local retailer, but also a mix market with both national chain stores and local retail stores. The joining of national stores attracts more visitors to Fulton mall, and also the fresh, new renovation make Fulton more international. On the other side, because of the national stores are too powerful and rich, many poor local stores are defeated by the high rent, and out of the market. Some people worried about the change of Fulton Street, but according a survey by Vicki Weiner, deputy director of the Pratt Center for Community Development, the construction of Fulton still function like traditional market place where people socialize as they shop.

A Wise Advice

As a freshmen coming into City tech, I was nervous but soon that nervousness turned into excitement when I got my syllabus of my ENG 1101 class. The reason for my excitement was when I saw all the things we were going to do where going to be fun because the class was going to work on a course that was fun and interesting. The course was called “Being in Brooklyn”. Now I was in Learning community which meant that my ENG 1101 and SPE 1130’s class work will over lap. This added to the fun even more and life easier. This ENG 1101 class will help us enhance you skills of writing long essay to short summaries and also reading. This class also helps you in doing your research more easily and also how to research in more credible ways. In this course called being in Brooklyn you guys will learn about the neighborhood of city tech and also learn a lot about rest of the Brooklyn. This course will cover some interesting sorties of past so be ready to learn some amusing facts. In this class we used one word almost everyday,”Location”. Since this course requires you to do a lot of research on various locations so be ready to be picking a good location on which you will have to do a speech and also write an essay.  This class also requires you to go on a few walking tours, some with class and some by yourself.  These walking tours make the class very interesting and fun so be ready for a lot of walking. This class might get little challenging but than if you have professors like Professor Steve Davis and Professor Jody Rose than you will be fine. They will help you anytime and in anyway possible. Another advice will be to ask them whenever you need help and also don’t leave your until the last day. It won’t be your best work since you won’t put our full effort to the work.
