Summary of Project 4

Brooklyn Bridge Park is full of history and is such a wonderful park. This is why I decided to write about it for project 4.  In my essay of the Brooklyn Bridge Park is about its past on how it used to be before, and how it is viewed today. What’s also mention on my essay is about the event when hurricane sandy hit Brooklyn Bridge Park. In Update, Brooklyn Bridge Park The author described the hurricanes attack on the park. “Winds toppled a few trees, but most survived, and the railings, benches, and posts were unscathed. But in exceeding the projected 100-year storm-water surge by nearly two feet, Sandy ruined most of the waterfront park’s electrical system.” Even though the Parks neighborhood was badly damaged, Brooklyn Bridge Park stood up against the storm. It is amazing how much Brooklyn Bridge Park has changed over the years, that centuries back it was not even park just old piers. Even today it was debated if Brooklyn Bridge Park was actually a park, which In Debate Rages on Housing at Planned Brooklyn Park by Sam Roberts talks about. Well in the end, Brooklyn Bridge Park is a park and haves to be the best and biggest park in Brooklyn!

Advice for future student

Dear, Students

I was in your situation I didn’t know what to expect from college. The time does go quick! That’s your only enemy in college time! So make sure you use it wisely because you don’t want to be wasting it by getting home taking a nap, watch TV, play video games, and then last minute start to panic because you have an essay or a project due the next day. College is nothing like high school so take that off your mind. The only person who cares and should care for your education is no one but yourself! Professors are not going to be behind you and telling you to finish your hw or reminding you to read a chapter or when an assignment is due. You are going to have to be responsible for all you’re school work. Some of you may think what you already want to study for your career. Some have no idea what they want to major in and that is completely normal so don’t feel that you should know what you want to major in. Most students may think they know what they want to major in, but then after a year or so they plan to change majors. So there is no rush because you may think you know what you want but there is a chance you will change your mind, don’t take too long you want to major in though. You are going to have to try hard in college it is not like high school if you are borderline passing and your high school teacher feels sympathy and passes you with a 65. No professor will feel sympathy for your lack of work and effort, you will get what you deserve! So try your best make sure to use your school resources because they do come in handy when it comes to assignments. One of my high school teachers gave me some words of advice that I always remember, and I would like to share them with you to “It doesn’t matter where you start from, but where you finish at!”

Sincerely,

Gabriel Perez

Brooklyn Bridge Park

The Brooklyn Bridge Park has been a historical park in New York City for many years it has attracted tourists from all over the world. What used to be old Piers, sold off have now turned into a site that people from all over would love to see. The termination of Old Fulton Street was the site of the original ferry that linked Brooklyn to Manhattan. In 1900, the New York Dock Company consolidated almost all of the waterfront property between Fulton Street and Erie Basin. At its peak, the New York Dock Co. owned or managed over 40 piers and approximately 150 stores and warehouses, making it the largest private freight terminal in the world. But in the 1950’s shipping in the area began a steady decline in use because of competition. By the late 1970’s Piers1-6 were warehouses and generating revenues for the Port Authority.

In Strategies for Enhancing Marine (and Human) Habitat at Brooklyn Bridge Park Matthew Urbanski and Rachel Gleeson state that “Brooklyn Bridge Park, which opened its first completed segment to the public in June 2010, is the first major park to be built in Brooklyn, New York, USA in over a century replacing derelict pier sheds and paved upland areas with new public access amenities and natural landscape elements, the park will bring new social life and ecological vitality to a waterfront that has long been dominated by commercial and industrial uses.”(72) The article explains two studies that were conducted in the 1900’s that focused on fish population in large piers on the lower Hudson River on marine habitat they were influential in placing public policy with respect to new construction structures that were over water in the studies fish counts were conducted to determine specific species distribution throughout a number of years. With the building of the piers they also wanted to make sure that the wildlife had room to spread as well. “In evaluating the potential of the environmental impact of the proposed park, the design team recognized the Brooklyn tidal shoreline ecology was an integrated system, where ecological enhancements in one particular are could produce a net benefit on surrounding habitat systems. This idea led to a plan to permanently remove large areas of existing overwater platforms, where strategically introducing new floating walkways connecting the outboard ends of piers that were designed to avoid the negative environmental impacts that had been observed under large piers.” (72)

Since then the Park has grown immensely located at 334 Furman Street with 85 acres of land and a 1.3-mile water front there are now there are 6 separate piers in which many travel everyday as you can see right now so many people here. The Park now features things such as sand volleyball courts, bicycle and running paths, a dog run, a boat launch where they give free kayaking lessons and a pool. These activities become really popular when the summer strikes, so remember when the weather gets warmer you can come here and enjoy it to the maximum. All provided with a spectacular view of the New York City skyline. The Park also provides over 400 free activities throughout the year ranging from performance arts and fitness classes to children’s education programs to performance arts and fitness classes. The park is a getaway from all of Downtown Brooklyn’s gray buildings with beautiful scenery and green hills, colorful playgrounds and now a pool. It is the perfect place to visit on a hot summer day with a picnic basket and bathing suit or a walk through during the fall or winter. It serves as a year round attraction for its people of Brooklyn and others who wish to visit.

As we can remember that on October 29,2012 hurricane Sandy struck the Northeastern United States also hitting Brooklyn Bridge Park In Update, Brooklyn Bridge Park  The author described the hurricanes attack on the park. “Winds toppled a few trees, but most survived, and the railings, benches, and posts were unscathed. But in exceeding the projected 100-year storm-water surge by nearly two feet, Sandy ruined most of the waterfront park’s electrical system.” The park did stand up to the Hurricane that caused absolute damage to neighborhoods, meaning that it was built very well. That was just one of the problems that the park had to endure, years before there was a debate on housing that was being planned by the park. In Debate Rages on Housing At Planned Brooklyn Park Sam Roberts asks the question “If 1,200 or so high-rise apartments, a hotel and other private buildings occupy about one-tenth of the land reserved for a park project, is it still a park?”  His article views both sides of the argument many didn’t want housing to go up because they didn’t feel like it would be a park anymore. Others felt that it gave the park a sense of life. Many believed it was going to be viewed as an industrial site instead of a city park. With the building of housing some believed that it would be a great addition and the project is now scheduled to begin during the fall of 2015.

Brooklyn Bridge Park is a great site to see whether it is during the day or at night, summer or winter this park has been a very positive addition to Brooklyn and its urban feel to it matches perfectly with its Brooklyn Heights neighborhood. The park is filled with much history and the process of making this breath taking landmark was not easy, but as you can see it was worth it.

I came across this word on today’s group worksheet. It was on the last question which was 6 and the question was – “Look at one photograph of the photographs of the Brooklyn Bridge. Does the photograph exemplify Lopate’s discussion of the Brooklyn Bridge?”

At first I didn’t know how I was going to be able to answer the question since I didn’t know what it meant. Since I figured it out was to give a response to the question and it was yes that the photographs of the bridge was able to show Lopate’s discussion of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Obscenity

noun

Definition: an offensive word

source:  http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/obscenity

In English class we were assigned to read a passage called “How to tell a true war story” while reading i came across the word obscenity. The word is located on the first page in the fifth paragraph ..”You can tell a true war story if it embarrasses you. if you don’t care for obscenity, you don’t care for the truth”

since obscenity definition is an offensive word/language. Now i can conclude that the narrative is trying to say to tell a good war story you need to say all the details no matter what even the offensive language. The narrative also states that if you don’t care for the offensive language then you don’t care about the story and to hear the truth of how a war story really is.

I encountered this word on a normal day looking through my Instagram. One of my friends posted saying, people are always complaining and whining about the cold weather. He dont complain because he is impervious to the cold weather.

Since i didnt know what impervious ment i looked it up. Since i know what the word means now i understand what my friend was stating. That he dont complain about the cold weather because the cold weather doesnt affect him or does not feel any type of coldness, so he feels impervious to the cold.

Deficiency

Noun

Definition: a lack of something that is needed : the state of not having enough of something necessary.

For my Psycology test i had to studty theories and terms. One of the terms was colorblind. the definition was: A deficiency in the ability to distinguish among colors. I know what was colorblind but i didnt know the word deficiency. To have a better understanding of the definition i wanted to know what the word deficiency ment so i searched it up.

Deficiency is another word for lack of something needed, so this helped understand more the definition of the word colorblind. Since the person is lacking in the ability to see colors cause of less cones they have, it’s more likely of being colorblind.

Autopsy

I came across this word when my friend came up to me and asked if i wanted to see a video of a autopsy. Since i did not know what it was, i was curious and decided to watch the video.

i did not really have to check in a dictionary to check what was an autopsy. The video made it pretty clear to me of what it was. Knowing the definition of an autopsy helped me understand the purpose of a autopsy.

Summary of speech class 11/6/13

Today in speech class we had a normal lesson In the class, the only abnormal thing of today’s class was that there was a guy evaluating Prof. Davis. Other than that we went went over types of persuasive speeches. for example if your specific purpose includes the word “should” then it falls into the Policy part of speech. If the specific purpose contains the word/s good/bad, better/worse, right/wrong etc. then it falls into Value. Thirdly if the specific purpose contains the words of statements such as  will, will not, is, was, can etc. then it calls into the category of fact. We also reviewed the five steps of Monroe Motivated Sequence. the first step is attention, second step is need, the third step is satisfaction, fourth step visualization, and the last step of Monroe Motivated Sequence is action. After we went over these steps we reviewed the different types of reasoning’s. Prof. Davis also went over the Logical Fallacies which are, invalid analogy, hasty generalization, red herring, ad hominem, bandwagon, false dilemma, and slippery slope. This is important to memorize or have a clear idea of these terms. Since Prof. Davis told my class that there will be questions based on this and mostly on chapter nine in our final exam.
