According to Jennifer Egan in âReading Lucyâ, Egan met a friend named Luccile Kolkin, by the old letters from her in Brooklyn Historical Society. By reading Lucyâs letters for her Husband, Egan knew about Lucyâs life and felt there were lots of similarities between Lucy and her, and she really like Lucyâs passion. Both of them liked to write âto-do listâ, they live in Brooklyn and they âboth work hard and struggled to find time for practical necessities like cleaning and shoppingâ. In addition, while reading the letters, Egan also tried to guess Lucyâs personalities, what did her like and what did she interest with. Though Lucyâs life, we saw there were a lot of facts which reveal the society in that time. âI (Lucy) went to college. So what. I look for a job and people say, âYes, yes but what can you do?â âNuttinâ say I.â  This showed the college education did not really matter; people were more willing to employ the men, because âmenâ are not equal at that time. Just like Minnie, a Negro who wanted to become a fitter in Navy Yard got rejected because she is a woman and a Negro. At the end, by reading Lucyâs life, it helped Egan to approach her Novel researching, a woman worked at Brooklyn Navy yard during WWII.

English Class Summary on 10/30
On Wednesdayâs English class, we discuss Jennifer Eganâs âReading Lucyâ and go over how Egan incorporate the source material in her article. At the beginning of the class we talk about how did our experiences in BHS are different with Egan. Most of us agree our goal, the purpose in the BHS are different. Then we discuss about incorporating source material.
The block quotation rules:
1.Started a new line.
2.Indent it on inch on the left, not at all on the right.
3.Keep the spacing the same. If it is prose paragraph, use regular formatting.
4.If it is poetry or something that takes a particular form, maintain that form.
Look at the example on page 22; we see there is a list, which quoted without quotation marks. It gives us a sense of what the source material look like on the page. Moreover, we use colon (:) to set off a large quotation.
(Colon: signals an example)
If you only want to use part of a passage, use an ellipsis to indicate that something is missing; be careful not to miss leading the audience, and moreover at the end of the sentence, there are 4 dots, because one is the period.(for example: âxxoo##âŚ.â)
When a quotation inside a quotation, we use single quotation mark inside the quote and the double quotation mark for the outside.
“Reading Lucy” by Jennifer Egan
From the article of âReading Lucyâ, we see Jennifer Egan learn about the history by the old letters from the past, For example, she put the letter about the African American girl on the article, showing the problem in the society in that period. âNot only does she have to fight as a woman, but as a Negroâ. From this we have little background about the civil right movement. Moreover, even Lucy went to the college, but she still cannot get a better job than a man does, which showed the inequality of the races.
Lucy is just an extraordinary person that Egan interest in, they live in different time period; however, both of them are Brooklynite. Egan strongly believes that Lucy and she have powerful friendship, even though she knows Lucy well, but Lucy knows nothing about her. They both have similar life style, such as the same method to write âto-do listsâ; they âboth worked hard and struggled to find time for practical necessities like cleaning and shopping⌠because of these connection, bonding Egan and Lucy, both of them develop the friendship over the time difference.
From this article, Egan conveyed Lucyâs story by her letters to her husband. And this not only conveyed the life of Lucy to the audiences, but also the life of Americans in 1944 and the problems on the society that people facing.
Speaking class summary on 10/23
On October 23, in the Speaking class, we first got our test scores back and then we start to talk about the visual aid. There are few important things we need to concern when we doing a visual aid or powepoint for our project. First, on PowerPoint, we should not distract the audience; and tip to keep the audiences’ attention off the screen is to show them a blank slide. The second thing is about how you choose your pictures, we should not choose a pictures that’ve is too busy, which means not too many things on the same picture, because the audiences cannot get the information from it. It is bad if you cannot send your message to the audiences. And the third thing we need to keep in mind is to show where your source come from, to make youspeech more creditable. The last thing is try not to use the completed sentences, but use short phase or word to send your message.

reflection on my experience with Brooklyn Historical Society
On October 15, we went to Brooklyn Historical Society and it gave me a new experience on doing research on map. From different type and different period of the map, I realize the maps can tell us a lot about the history, which we could not find on the reading. Such as the change on Pearl Street; and how a family view their neighborhood in their own family map. From the experiences in this semester, I learn a valuable lesson that things are not the same from different vantage points. Â Because people have different point of view, even that was the same place, but we still see them differently by different time period. Such as the map of the 9th Avenue on New Yorker magazine, his view of the world is different from what we see today, because the time and our thought are different with him. Thus, we should learn about the community by ourselves, analyzing the creditable resource and get to know what this community real likes. Brooklyn Historical Society is a great place to study the history, even we have internet, but there still have many material, resource that is not on the website. I think I will go back there when I need to research.

Fulton Street, Overlapping New York
My high school teacher always said the life in city universities is like the high school; you go to school and go back home. Now, this became part of my life; I never explore the neighborhood near the City College of Technology, because I think Downtown Brooklyn just is a college town, since I saw many school on my way to CityTech. However, everything had changed after I crossed the line, and found the Fulton Mall, the center of the Downtown Brooklyn. Fulton Street not just a street full of department stores, its heavy value proves the changing of the New York and also shows how New York overlapping.
How to arrive the Fulton Street? Starting at the entrance of General building from our school, turn left and walk straight down to the Fulton Street, approximately four blocks away; when you passed the Willoughby Plaza, make a left turn to the Fulton Mall. That is where I begin my adventure, the central area of the street.
When I first got there, the first thing I capture in my eyes is people. Even that was the weekday; people were still walking through the street, and shopping in retail stores unstoppably. I like frame a photographs from the view of my eyes, as I walking on the street, I take new things and interest things in my photographs
My eyes follow the walking people and I start to focus on the department stores on the Fulton Street. There were some famous brand chain stores I knew very well, such as Modell, Starbucks and Gaps, etc. however, there was also many unknown local retail stores that I never heard of, most of them are the clothes store, and they were selling very unique and stylish clothes, very different with the brand store. I suddenly understand why people concentrate at here; unlike all brand stores in Soho, New York, Fulton Mall gives people more options, more creative products and ideas, always impress the customers.
I kept walking and stopped on the corner of the street, when I waiting the red light turn white, I look up, and I found some interesting things about downtown Brooklynâs building. The buildings along the Fulton Street are shorter than the buildings around the Fulton Street. I guess because the buildings on the Fulton Street were older than the buildings around the street, since they are not replaceable, people kept moving in and joined the economy of Brooklyn Fulton Street, the street keep its look for the businesses, instead changing for the people to live in.
I chose this place for the project because I like the atmosphere on Fulton Street, it is very lively, and make me want to shop. Â When I explore the Downtown Brooklyn, I lost my self at there. I almost give up and try to find station on Jay Street and go home, then, I found the Fulton Street. I still remember how impressive it is when I saw that shoppers rushing on the street carried shopping bags on their both hands. I always thinks Brooklyn is quiet neighborhood, boring and historical; however, Fulton street is totally different; it is fashionable, and lively. This is the new Brooklyn I never knew; just like Mr. Self said, âitâs all I can do to keep myself from being isolated all the timeâ (McGrath). New York is the greatest city with many new, fresh, and interesting things around, it always freshened up people. Therefore, we should not isolate ourselves in certain places; and to enjoy this âmunificent giftâ, get to know about it.
From Whiteheadâs âCity Limitedâ, it said, âYou didnât know that each time you passed the threshold you were saying goodbyeâ (Whitehead). The changing along the Fulton Mall is similar to that Chinese restaurant; someday, this store opens, someday, that store closed. People never know what happen tomorrow especially the fashion business. After a month, when you come back and shop in Fulton Street, you will find out your âold friendâ was gone and a ânew friendâ came. Like the author Whitehead said you never know when to say goodbye to your New York. From the past to present, we can see that Fulton Street keep changing and we still cannot predict what it would be in the future.
âOur old building still stand because we saw them, moved in and out of their long shadowsâŚThey are part of city we carry around. It is hard to imagine that something will take their placeâ (Whitehead). It is disappointed when you coming for something and after you get there, it is gone. And you can only put the old memories put inside your heart. Thus, you have to treasure every time you meet it. For the people, Fulton Street might just a street for shoppers to shop, for customers to eat, and a nice place for people to relax and enjoy the simple pleasure. However, from the past to present, along on the Fulton Street, especially the Fulton mall area, the street changes as the time move on. We always come back because Fulton Street is part of city that we carry, that old place the full of many happy memories. The value of Fulton Street is much heavy than its actual weight.
After visiting along the Fulton Street, I want to know more about the history of this amazing street, when it developed? Why it developed at the center of Downtown Brooklyn.
Downtown Brooklyn is a cluster of extraordinary neighborhood, you never know if you not explore it. Like Fulton Street, one of the busiest shopping districts in Brooklyn, it just a simple neighborhood, but it show the New York overlapping, from the past to present, from National to local department stores. By compare and contract every detail on that street, I was more understand the author of âCity Limitedâ, your own New York is create by yourself, you never knew a New York by hearing other people said.

Library Session
On October 2, 2013, we spent our double class in our school library—-the computer lab room in Ursula Schwerin Library. First, Professor Davis gave us two sources and let us figured out which one is credible information, which is the bias; and what should we search online when we do the research.
Then, we had given a topic, âthe Brooklyn Theater fireâ to research it on the internet. First, we use the search engine like âGoogleâ, âBlingâ, and âYahooâ. However, it does not show a lot of information and few websites are exactly the same. Therefore, we look up this topic by the library catalog by using the key words; however, there is no book match to the Brooklyn Theater fire, which is pretty disappointed. But there are many article are related to this topic, and I just do not have time to identify whether they are credible or bias. I think next time when I cannot find anything on the internet or the books; I might try to search the article, to find information.
View Of world Form 9th Avenue
On the map, it seems like 9th and 10th Avenue are busy street, many people and cars on the streets. And across the Hudson River, there is New Jersey, which does not look like a city, more like countryside, and Far away from New Jersey is the Pacific Ocean and across the ocean are three countries. Enlarge the map; I can clearly see âChinaâ on the left and âRussiaâ on the right side. From this map, it shows the view of world from Saul. For example, it is inaccurate that only three countries on the other side of Pacific Ocean, in addition, the Jersey is like an uncivilized forest. And all these detail shows the arrogant views from New Yorker, their view the world in 1976, that New York is the best, the most cherish and significant. The New Yorker Magazine choose this picture as their cover because this is most of the New Yorkersâ view to the world, or maybe they like how this picture shows the greatest of New York. However, since New Yorker is the magazine of criticism and satire cartoon and etc. maybe it is a satire about how arrogant the people are, and the bias that Saul had.
happiest and saddest place in NYC
New York City is a big city; most of the places are still new for me. When I recall my saddest place in here, I can clearly point out the Seward Park, the park in Lower East Side on Manhattan, a block away from my school. Some people think that was a dangerous park in the neighborhood, because there were lots of thieves, people got steal at there. I still remember it was a sunny day and my friend and I hang out at the park after school. We left our bags on the bench and went to play game. When we come back to take our stuffs, our wallet and other variable stuffs are all gone. I lost my wallet, with my whole month spending money in it.
There are lots of good memories in New York City; my happiest place in New York is Elizabeth Center in Chinatown. Since Asian girl love cute things, no matter what age you are; thus, Elizabeth Center is happiest place to me. In there I can buy many funny and useful things; moreover, it gives me a feel of my hometown. I do not visit there so often, but when my friendsâ birthday came, I always could find the best gifts for them at Elizabeth Center. From hair to feet, there are lots of cute products I can buy, even the snakes.
