Chapter 12 Summary
People attend meetings, conventions, and expositions for different reasons. Some reasons might include social, sporting, political, or for religious purposes. It goes back to many centuries before the Middle Ages. Meetings, incentive travel, conventions, and exhibition (MICE) helps represent a segment of the tourism industry that has become popular in the recent years. Meeting planners may be independent contractors who help contract out of their services to associations and corporations.  They help increase the image of tourism in the local and city areas. Destination management companies work with hotels and sometimes help book rooms. The different destination management companies help with airport greetings, transportation to the hotel, VIP check in, and etc. They have many different responsibilities and has a budget to work with. The responsibilities of a destination management companies might also help with the organization of theme parties since they have the different skills that is needed to plan the event.

Chapter 13 Summary
Event Planning refers to a career path in the growing field of special events. Event planners have different responsibilities which can include setting the date and location, advertising the event, providing refreshments, and arranging catering, speakers, or entertainment. There are different skills that are needed to be an effective event planner. There are stages in the event planning process. Some challenges that event planners and mangers might face are time management, financial management, technology, and human resource management. Many events such as concerts and sporting events are different types of special events that can occur. Some concerts might be planned as fundraisers. The mega sporting events include the Olympics, the World Cup, Super Bowl, and many others. These events are mostly sports related. Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International (HSMAI) is the most active and largest travel industry sales that has over 7,000 members in 47 chapters from 12 countries. Local convention and visitors’ bureau are not-for-profit organizations and its primary functions are to encourage groups to hold meetings. Some trends that you might see are that the special event industry is forecasted to grow because clients ask for spectacular events.

    Chapter 12

    Meetings have been around since ancient times for political, social, sporting and other reasons. MICE makes a big part of the tourism industry, and growing more each year. Associations aren’t cheap, spending billions just to attract their guest and associates. It’s worth it due to the fact that it’s the only political source in the hospitality industry. Meeting planners has a big role in planning events while contracting their services to both associations and corporations. All the service needed to run the facilities are provided by service contractors. They Are many different types of meetings including clinic. Forum, seminar, workshop, and symposium. The purpose of the meeting is to set a tone and affect behavior by sending out a message. Conventions are larger meetings held in large hotels a little less than a week. Associations on the other hand is mostly used to promote and put together a common interest. There are many different type of meetings including Annual, incentive, social, military, etc. Meeting planning also includes what’s going happen after the meeting such as post plans. A Lot of times these meeting are where contracts takes place that bring two or more groups on an agreement through a legal document.

    The career event planning was first introduced in hotels and conventions. There job consist of setting the date and location, advertising, providing refreshments and entertainment. To manage a field like this you should have great leadership skills and have many sponsors. There’s different stages in event planning such as answering questions, designing, planning, coordination and evaluation. The job isn’t easy facing many challenges such as time and financial management, technology, and human resource. There are many type of events such as corporate, association, charity balls, social events, fairs and festivals, concerts and sporting events. HSMAI is the largest travel industry sales and marketing membership organization in the world. So if you decide to be an event planner, start making connections now because they will be needed later on in the future.

    Meetings, conventions and expositions are what people attend for many different reasons for example it can be for a social event, sporting, political etc. Associations like this go way back to many centuries ago. Meetings, incentive travel, conventions, and exhibitions (MICE) represent a segment of the tourism industry. Associations are good for marketing, education, member services etc. There are many different types of meetings including clinic. Forum, seminar, workshop, and symposium.An association meeting planner to choose from include the destination’s availability of hotel and facilities, ease of transportation, distance from attendees, transportation costs, and food and beverage. A convention is a larger meeting that takes up to three to five days. These events help the companies grow as a business.

    Event planning is a general term that refers to a career path in the growing field of special events.They are responsible for starting the date and location, advertising the event, providing refreshments, arranging catering speaking, and entertainment. Challenges that event planners and managers might face are time management, financial management, technology, and human resource management. Type of events such as corporate, association, charity balls, social events, fairs and festivals, concerts and sporting events, and mega sporting events.Some skills may be leadership skills, budgeting skills, enthusiasm, effective social skills etc. HSMAI is the largest travel industry sales and marketing membership organization in the world has over 7,000 members.

Associations offer benefits such as a political voice, education, marketing avenues, member services, and networking. Meetings are events designed to bring people together for the purpose of exchanging information. Typical forms of meetings are conferences, workshops, seminars, forums, and symposiums. Epositions bring together purveyors of products, equipment, and services in an environment in which they can demonstrate their products. Conventions are meetings that include some form of exposition. Conventions, meetings, and expositions serve social, political, sporting, or religious purposes. Associations offer benefits
    such as a political voice, education, marketing avenues, member services, and networking.
    Meetings are events designed to bring people together for the purpose of exchanging information. Typical forms of meetings are conferences, workshops, seminars, forums,
    and symposiums. Expositions bring together purveyors of products, equipment, and services in an environment in which they can demonstrate their products.

    Special events differ from daily events, which tend to occur spontaneously, in that they recognize a unique moment in time with ceremony and ritual to satisfy specific needs and are always planned.The special events industry is a growing field that will provide many professionalcareer opportunities in event management and planning. Special events planners and managers have filled a need that was first introduced at hotels and convention centers. They are responsible for planning the event from start to finish. The special events industry can be grouped into several smaller classifications, including corporate events, association events, charity balls and fundraising events, social functions, fairs and festivals, and concert
    and sporting events.

Associations began in the United States at the beginning of the eighteenth century, when Rhode Island candle makers organized themselves. Meetings, incentive travel, conventions, and exhibitions (MICE) represent a segment of the tourism industry that has grown in recent years. Associations spend billions of dollars holding thousands of meetings and conventions that attract millions of attendees. The major players in the convention industry are convention and visitors’ bureaus (CVBs). Service organizations within the visitor industry offer a host of programs and services to meet clients’ needs. There are different types of meetings such as seminars, symposiums, and workshops. Conventions are larger meetings with some form of exposition or trade show included. Companies that choose to partake conventions are reporting higher gross margins, higher returns on sales, higher returns on assets and a stronger cash flow within their own organizations.

    Event planning is a general term that refers to a career path in the growing field of special events. A variety of skills are needed to be an effective planner. To gain business, event managers prepare a proposal for the client’s approval and contract signature. Sponsors provide money or in-kind contributions and in return receive recognition, including use or display of their logos; they expect something in return for their financial contribution. Steps of event planning are the research stage, design stage and planning stage. Time management, financial management, technology and effective human resource management are challenges and tools for event planners and managers.
