    Chapter 10 Summary

The word recreation is defined as the use of time for therapeutic refreshment of one’s body or mind. Recreation is free time that people use to restore, rest, and relax their minds and bodies. Recreational activities can be passive or active, individual or group activities. Recreational activities range from cultural pursuits such as museums or theaters, to sports or outdoor recreation such as amusement parks, community centers, playgrounds, and libraries. These services involve various levels of government. Today, city governments are increasingly expected to provide recreational facilities such as golf courses, swimming pools, picnic areas, and playgrounds as a community service. Commercial recreation for example, theme parks, clubs, and attractions—involves a profit for the supplier of the recreational activity. Clubs are places where members gather for social, recreational, professional, or fraternal reasons. There are many different types of clubs such as country clubs and city clubs categorized according to the interests they represent to their members.
Noncommercial recreation includes governmental and nonprofit agencies, such as voluntary organization, campus, armed forces, and employee recreation, and recreation for special populations, such as the physically challenged. Our national parks are under serious threat from a number of sources, including congestion resulting from over visitation, consequent environmental degradation, and pollution. There are too many people and too many vehicles in the most popular national parks. Many visitors bring their city lifestyle, leaving garbage lying around, listening to loud music, and leaving the trails in worse shape.

What is recreation? Recreation is allowing people to have fun and make memories, or at least that’s what it is in the hospitality industry. To do this we must have some Leisure which is time spent from work/school, etc. An example of this can be spent at a national park which were founded in 1916 by congress. Then there’s theme parks such as disney that focuses on one thing. There are many other attractions including regional theme parks, animal attractions, historic places, museums, performing arts, etc. Managing theme parks is similar to managing a business containing the same functions such as planning, organizing, decision making, and controlling. Clubs are also another hot spot where people gather to socialize. The club industry can lead to billion of dollars towards economic impact. Theres many different type of clubs although they don’t provide sleeping accommodations who doesn’t enjoy going to clubs.

Recreation is the use of someone’s time to relax one’s mind and body. Recreational activities can create everlasting bonds with those around us. By having a bit of leisure, free time from work, school or etc, one can plan more thoroughly. Recreational activities can be something as simple as a park, like Central Park, or theme parks, such as Disney world, but use the same main management functions. These functions include planning, organizing, decision making and controlling. Attractions that include this management can also include theaters, museums, animal attractions, historical sites and more; the variation of attractions help suit everyones needs depending on what they are searching for. Another form and very popular recreational amenity are clubs. Clubs such as country, athletic, dinning and etc create a grand impact on our economy. On the contrary noncommercial recreation can include, voluntary organizations, campus and etc. Noncommercial recreation differentiate from commercial recreation because their purpose isn’t to sale a product or service.

To use your recreational time , you have lots of options. Government guided and sponsored or privately owned. Nature filled and recharging or kids craziness and lots of themed fun. One has a choice of many national parks throughout US or theme parks like Disney or Hershey’s. There are zoos, see worlds and legolands.
Heritage tourism has always been popular and includes researching and observing historical sites. It is believed there are places inside cities that you must see ( i e Eifel Tower in Paris) and there are museums you can not miss ( i e Met in NYC).
It is also believed there are places you have to see before you die. And of course it is Paris, Rome etc.
Interesting topic is private clubs. It attracts people by hobbies, business, status and recreation ( whatever it is for them ) . Club management is similar to hotel management.

Food cost percentage is calculated by dividing the food cost by food sale, while the labor cost is measured by dividing the cost of labor by food sales. Usually the larger the hotel and higher the room rate, the more likely it is to have room service, though there are a few problems with that, such as a customer complaining about excessive charges. We can practice sustainability in food and beverage operations by saving water and electricity, recycling more and purchasing local products- lowering our carbon footprint by transportation distances.
Wines can be classified by light beverage wines (still wines: red, white, rose), sparkling wines, fortified and aromatic wines. Still wines can be matched with certain foods to enhance flavors such as white wine paired with poultry and fish; and red wine with red meats. There have been studies that state a glass of wine is beneficial to our health. Organic wines tend to use more environmentally methods that use no chemicals and pesticides. Beers includes: lager, ale, stout, and pilsner. Beer breweries can lower their ecological footprint by recycling paper, water treatment to reduce their water use, and by having generally more efficient breweries. Spirits are fermented and distilled liquids. Proof is determined by twice the alcohol percentage in the US. Cocktails became popular in the 1920’s and 30’s, and are made by mixing two or more ingredients. Well alcohol are known as bottom shelf (cheaper drinks) and calls are usually the most expensive of the type of spirits. Bars are liable if they are found serving minors and to intoxicated people.
