The career paths in the hospitality industry could be rewarding and you don’t need much credentials to have a career in the field. one way to succeed in the hospitality industry one needs to have a good work ethic and be compassionate. Hospitality has been around for a great deal of time because it does not only pertain to one person as anyone can show hospitality. many famous places around the world has been open for over a hundred years and longer. I think hospitality is a great field to get into not only because it is fun and exciting but I don’t think the hospitality industry would ever go out of business. As someone who loves the idea of traveling and trying new foods, I’d like to go out and explore all parts of the world, and with people of all ages willing to travel and explore the world there would be a constant need for people in the service industry.

Since the beginning of time the word ” Hospitality” has been a symbol of care, shelter, and service for travelers. It began in ancient times when taverns provided a place of relaxation for both locals as well as travelers. Thru out the times it has evolved in different aspects but the concept of service has remain in tact. From a tavern or rest house in the 8th century, to a coffee house in the 17th century and finally to hotels and motels in the 20th century. In the 1980s the baby boomers had great influence in the rapid growth of the hospitality and tourism industry.

The hospitality industry as well as the tourism and travel is one of the fastest growing industry in the word. It provides an exciting career opportunity to those individuals who enjoy being of service to others. It gives associates a chance to help guest create ever lasting memories and fascinating experiences. The industry offers employees many career paths such as the hotel business, the restaurant business, and many more. It provides competitive pay and great advancement opportunities.

As I read this chapter there were a few point that stood out for me. One is “The moment of truth” that first moment where the associate makes contact with the guest. This could be a brief eye contact or a powerful encounter. This industry doesn’t have a set 9 to 5 period of service, Its open 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. ” The Disney Approach” which states that we help create happiness and it begins with a simple smile or hello. The meaning behind the symbol of hospitality the pineapple.

There are many components that make up this fascinating world and as we read on we will learn about a few of them.

  4. Hospitality has long been a part of society since the ancient times. Places called “Taverns” and “Inns” were created to provide relaxation, comfort, and entertainment for exhausted farmers and workers. They would also create laws that prevent any crimes from blossoming in taverns or inns. Aside from creating places to rest, Coffee houses were also created for people who were either interested in coffee or gossiping; it was the perfect place to enjoy their coffee and tea while conversing with company. The French Revolution made a huge impact on Culinary. Since all the french chefs solely worked for the nobility, after the french revolution, the chefs had lost their jobs. Some of the french chefs had settled in the New World, in New Orleans, which was a french dominated territory. There they shared their recipes on sauces and different kinds of dishes that were complementary with the “primitive” cooking of the british. The nineteenth century introduced the first great cookbooks, the à la carte menu, and the brigade system in the kitchen. The twentieth century displayed an expeditious growth with the development of hospitality industry after World War II, and baby boomers in the 1980s expanded the industry with their power. The hospitality industry helped with the economic recovery after 9/11.
Hospitality leaders and workers strive everyday with passion and determination to serve people with “service spirit” in order to create memories with the customers. Making the guest’s experience a memorable one is our number one priority. Pineapples are the symbols of hospitality with its rich history. Hospitality and Tourism go hand-in-hand as the largest and fastest growing industry, and there are innumerable professions that are intertwined with each other; in which all are necessary to provide for the needs and wants of the guests. Hospitality employees affect the guests experience with their first impressions and moments of truth. Managed services handle all the food services from massive food distribution to institutions. Hotel Business handles career opportunities to handle lodging services for the guests. Restaurant Business meets the guests’ needs to eat, to be comfortably socialize and entertained. The services we provide are intangible, and we cannot separate the production and consumption of our service products, since each guests has unique demands. We also have to consider the perishability of the products we sell. Our industry never rests and relies on shift work, which may sometimes extend more than a normal work day. Empowerment allows an employee to make decisions in order to increase satisfaction between the guest and the employee. Sustainability is necessary in order for the hospitality industry to thrive and last for the future generations. In order to succeed in service, one must fully understand the role of guest services and offer guests with exceptional service. Customer Satisfaction equals a Company’s Success. TQM focuses on error prevention and QC focuses on error detection.

After the Sumerians had become successful farmers, they started to begin different activities such as writing, inventing money, creating pottery, making tools, and etc. During the ancient times taverns began to pop up in Europe, China, Egypt, and India. These places provided a sense of relaxation and time to enjoy different peoples company. During the 17th century, there were coffee houses in Europe. An example of the most famous coffee house was Café Florian on the Piazza San Marco. In the 20th century, there was rapid growth of hotels, motels, fast food restaurants, and coffee shops. This all happened after World War 2 was finished. The pineapple symbolizes being welcomed, friendship, and hospitality. The pineapple is recognized across the globe as sign of hospitality.

In Medieval times, Charlemagne established rest houses for pilgrims in the 8th century. In the late 16th century eating establishments known as ‘ordinaries’ which were taverns serving a fixed-price meal, became popularized. In the 17th century, coffee houses began popping up all over Europe and became the social and centers of their day.
The French Revolution changed the course of culinary history. Most French chefs worked for the nobility, but after the nobility lost their titles and their property, the chefs lost their jobs. Many of them immigrated to the New World and found themselves in New Orleans, a French enclave. They introduced sauces and other dishes originating from the British.
In more recent history, hotels, motels, fast food restaurants and coffee shops began rapidly developing in the post-World War II-era. 8. Tania says:

In chapter 1 I learned the important values of hospitality. The hospitality industry is an ever growing field of work expanding to different branches. Acts of hospitality have dated back to the medieval era with examples of Charlemagne made rest houses for pilgrims. In each culture, we find examples of hotel like businesses for people to rest and eat. Romans had inns, Europeans had coffee shops and Summarians produced taverns which later popped up in Europe, China, Egypt and India. Coming back to more recent times hospitality can be found everywhere and is the fastest growing industry. One of the most crucial moments with a guest is the first impression, also known as the moment of truth. This moment can be the foundation to loyal customers or can cause an unhappy guest which you don’t want. In order to increase the number of loyal customers you must always prioritize the guest and treat all guests equally. An effective leader knows “how to run the show” knowing what needs to be done and how to do it quickly and efficiently. A skilled leader will as well empower all his employees. Giving an employee empowerment can also increase productivity and guest satisfaction. Two important methods are QC, error detection, to avoid malfunctions and TQM, total quality management, where managers are skilled leaders. These methods will, in the long run, create a better system to deliver good service to the customer. Overall hospitality has evolved over the centuries and good customer service comes down to prioritizing the guest and can be caused by empowered employees and efficient leaders.

Staff or employee who has a direct contact with a guest or customer. He or she will greet, welcome, assist, provide and deliver good services and products to the guest as well. It explains and describes how everything started, from where the name came from to what it means to be in the field, goes on by talking about the how the French Revolution affected the industry and how many chefs that work in France during those times had lost their jobs and had to come to the New world to continue their passions. Like the moment of truth we don’t pay much mind to it but it happens to me just when I welcome the host to my hall. Thats their first impression of me/ or my wait staff.

Hospitality is one of the oldest industries in the world. Taverns , Inns ,Ordinaries, in the different parts of the world and different times were appearing and prospering from ancient times all the way into our reality . Till these days it is one of the most growing industries that concentrates on service to the people and as Disney model says :” creating happiness for people”. So what makes this industry sweet like a pineapple that stands for its symbol? Of course its philosophy and people working in hospitality and sister industries like tourism. Focus on service , on fast changing and growing business, on guests who are also changing with time and on their needs is the key. Managing , TQM and CQ are essential for successful growing as well. We live in the age of service and service has to be excellent.

  20. Hospitality comes from the French word ‘hospice’, which translates to “to provide care/shelter for travelers”. Hospitality was practiced with the opening of taverns, which gave locals a place to relax. Many types of places that practiced hospitality were established throughout time such as, inns, post houses, ordinary, and coffee houses. As these places became more common the hospitality industry grew more and more, especially in America after World War 2. This text was also very informative of the field and what it has to offer.

The term hospitality originates from the French word hospice.Which means to provide travelers/tourist. The Hospitality industry isn’t really new as it existed in Ancient times; the Taverns also referred to the “ordinary ” in the 16th century were popular places to visit in which the best meals were served at the time. Back in the 8th century pilgrims were provided with homes to stay temporarily known as rest houses. As good Taverns were in ancient times for their service; they were going through serious penalties for watering down ever during Hammurabi’s period.Coffee houses began to spread all over Europe during the 17th century .Chapter 1 simply shows that the hospitality industry wasn’t just something made in one day but a facility developed through generations through the use of sheltering traveler , culinary expertise , and architecture structure .

Starting off with inns, taverns, coffee houses, ordinary, and post houses, hospitality has been a rapid growing industry. Hospitality has been around providing others with a place to rest and to eat. This chapter taught me a lot about the starting of hospitality and how it quickly boomed.

  24. In chapter 1, we learn a lot of things about the origin of hospitality. How it all started from opening small taverns in local places to spreading all over the world. Only beers was served in taverns at first, little by little they introduced fixed meals , followed by coffee shops.
The chapter also introduces us to the origins of the first cooking books that installed the ‘a la carte menu’ and also the famous book ‘le Guide culinaire’ that set up a way to organize the kitchen to avoid the mess, by separating the tasks.
Little by little were created hotel, coffee shops, bars and all different places of hospitality.
This chapter shows the progression of the hospitality business during the years, giving informations about working inside the industry, how it is.
