36 Hours in San Juan, Manila

I was born and raised in San Juan, Manila, Philippines. If there was ever a place that I could go to right now it’d be there. It’s been 7 years since I had left the Philippines to move here in New York, and there times that I had felt homesick. San Juan is a city in the Philippines located east of Manila. It is historically known as the site of the first battle of the Katipunan, the organization which led the 1896 Philippine Revolution against the Spanish Empire. There’s so many reasons why one should go and visit San Juan, it is a place where history and the present work together to create such a beautiful city. I recommend visiting these places if one were to go there:

8:00 am- Arrive at the NAIA and take a taxi or an Uber, which is the most convenient transportation in Manila.

10:00 am- visit this hopia shop called Polland hopia Cafe. A specialty of this decade-old cafe is the thin-crust hopia, a round pastry filled with mung bean paste. Other favorites are the fresh lumpia, an unfried spring roll, and kuchai-ah, a herb-filled turnover.

12:00 pm- Arrive at Greenhills Shopping Center, it is known as the oldest and biggest mall in San Juan. Around December, during Christmas, the mall present a nice animation show with Christmas as its theme on top of their big sign.

7:00 pm- Eat at Andok’s Litson Manok. You have to try their famous rotisserie chicken. It is well seasoned and the meat is nice, tender, and juicy.

9:00 pm- Visit the Promenade at Greenhills. It is a trendy place for people to go and have a fun and chill night. There is cinema and a small shoppesville inside.

10:00 am- Ride a Jeepney to go to St. John the Baptist Church. It is a famous Roman Catholic Church with its history and it’s nice infrastructure. Another name for it is “the pinaglabanan church”, named after the neighborhood.

11:00 am- Visit the Pinaglabanan Memorial Shrine, which is a couple of blocks from the church. It represents the history of the city, and mainly of the group called KKK, who stood up to fought for the Philippine independence.

12:00 pm- You cannot leave the Philippines without eating at Jollibee, the number 1 well known fast food chain in the Philippines. Its signature dish is their crispy fried chicken, served with hot rice and gravy.

1:00 pm- Enjoy shopping, fun, and relaxation all at SM’s mall in centerpoint.

7:00 pm- Enjoy eating dinner at the mall’s food court, which presents all sorts of signature Filipino, Chinese, and American dishes.
