  1. Tourism is the largest industry in the world. There is an agency that is arranged or organized by the United Nations especially for tourism. The organization, (WTO), emphasizes on many aspects of tourism such as: keeping tourism sustainable, making tourism accessible for everyone in the world, continuing economic development, and making sure there is peace, prosperity, and respect for human rights. For many countries, their number one source of income comes from tourism (GDP); it also gives the country with a positive balance of trade with other nations. The organizations, WTO and the World Travel & Tourism Council created guidelines as to what the travel and tourism industry needs to abide on. Tourism has many benefits; it supplies the government with substantial tax income, and it gives great employment globally. Travel, lodging, food service, recreation, and tourism go hand-in-hand and depend on each other, mostly for business. The reasons for traveling in the middle ages are mainly for religion. The one trend that the hospitality and tourism industry follow, is the continuous change in technology. The invention of the railroad had many impacts on society in the United States, such as building of towns, and hotels to be built near rail depots; Motels were also created when automobile traveling was introduced. The Hub and Spoke system enables passengers to travel from one smaller city to another smaller city using a hub (please comment: what is a hub? A bus? A shuttle?).

    Summary of Chapter 9

Chapter 9 explained tourism is one of the largest industry in the world. It has a great impact of economic development and also international understanding. The main income of tourism for the local community is tax revenue and it also offers more employment prospects.

Tourism is the time line reflection of people’s life style and society development. Different ages have different ways and reasons for traveling. For example, travel in the middle ages was mostly for religious or trade reasons. And there is the railway age, automobile age, aircraft age and cruise age. Each age represents how people travel.

Cruise ship and airline are the most popular way to travel in our age now. The Hub and Spoke System is for those people who travel from a small city to another small city, and the benefits of this is to lower cost to more cities and the airline can also save fuel too. With the new technology developing, people invented the Boeing airplane. It can carry more people and travel to further countries and it can save up to 20 percent of fuel. Cruise Ships is another main travel in the tourism market, the curies market has increased dramatically in recent years.

The cruise market is divided into three parts; there are mass market and middle market and luxury market. Each market consists of people with different income range.

Ecotourism explained the positive impact of tourism is to develop the country, creating more employment opportunities. There are also negative impacts of it, such as environmental, resource, community’s safety problem. Sustainable tourism means we need to follow some of the obligations when we are abroad, such as to respect sociocultural, heritage and traditional values.

What is tourism? We can start off my saying it’s the world’s largest industry. Tourism industry is an industry that never sleeps running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 52 weeks a year. About 9 percent of the workers in the world works in this industry, which is more than a lot counting how much jobs they are. Everyone benefits from tourism, even the government collecting there substantial tax. There is five ages of tourism which started at the pre industrial and now up to the cruise ship age. The tourism industry produces about 1 in every 10 jobs and about 60 million travelers worldwide visit the US each year. The more money tourist spend the more businesses will get to buy goods and produce positively towards the economy, which is known as the multiplier effect. Why is tourism such a big industry? Maybe because of the amount of promoters such as NTO, TIA, NOTE’s, PATA, etc. Business travelers were reduced over the years due to climate, terrorist attacks, and high budget. Ecotourism is directed towards many other things developed in many other countries in small scales. But that’s not the only tourism the others include cultural, heritage, nature, culinary, and volunteer tourism. As you can see now this is the reason Tourism is the world’s biggest industry it isn’t just within us but its worldwide.

    Chapter 9 Summary

People just think of tourism as traveling abroad. However, there is much about tourism than people think there is. Yes, tourism is about traveling and staying in places outside your unusual environment but tourism is also one of the biggest organizations in the world that causes economic success. WTO, the world trade organization, and the World Travel & Tourism Council both declared that tourism accounts for 9.1% of the gross domestic product-worldwide, has employed over 259 million people and is the leading producer of tax revenues. Everyone benefits from the tourism including the government and that is the reason there are so many jobs. Tourism offers global employment and benefits the government by providing them with substantial tax revenues. This is all resulted from the opening of borders, air plane tickets being sold, and vacation costs. Tourism is growing tremendously day by day resulting in success of food and beverage businesses, air plane ticket sales, improving hotels and recreation businesses. By the year of 2013, international arrivals expected to reach over 1.8 billion. There are 5 ages of tourism divided into five distinct ages and they are Pre-industrial, the railway age, the auto mobile age, the jet aircraft age, and the cruise ship age. In the middle ages, people traveled for religious and trade reasons. Since technology and economy has developed extremely well, traveling is mainly for vacations. People used to only travel on old railways, cars and now people travel on cruise ships and air planes for more luxurious and time saving trips. With the growth of tourism each day, businesses and trade companies have nothing to lose. In fact, they are only benefiting from it. Therefore, Tourism is a great way to help the economy grow and create job opportunities.

    Chapter 9

Tourism is the world’s largest industry. It plays a role in the international understanding, peace, prosperity, and respect for human rights, and freedoms. For many countries, tourism represents a large percentage of GDP. The tourism industry is the leading producer of tax revenues and it also employs 259 million people. Europe, East Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas are the top receiving areas of the industry. Each Segment of tourism like travel, lodging, food service, etc. depend on each other for business. I learned that the historical development of tourism has been 5 different periods. Back then travel was mostly only religious or trade reasons. Rail travel causes hotels to be built near rail depots. I learned that the Hub and Spoke system lets passengers travel from one small city to another small city via a hub. It has two main benefits, airlines can work with small cities at a lower cost, and airlines can save fuel. The cruise market has increased in recent years about 9 million Americans cruise each year. Also, travelers spend $94 billion in travel in U.S. The industry generates $100 billion in tax. About 59.7 million international travelers visit the U.S. each year. I found out that the business travel has declined due to the general economic climate. Tourism can have a positive or negative impact on a community. Lastly, Ecotourism is more like individual values, it is “tourism with a conscience” (PP slide 30).

Tourism comprises the activities of persons traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment. Tourism may be international, or within the traveler’s country. The World Tourism Organization defines tourism more generally, in terms which go beyond the common perception of tourism as being limited to holiday activity only, as people traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes. The tourism industry is a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year economic driver, and employs about 259 million people. It is also a leading producer of tax revenues. Tourism is a collection of industries that when combined, form the world’s largest industry and employer. It affects other industry sectors, such as public transportation, foodservice, lodging, entertainment, and recreation. Money is recycled by businesses to purchase goods, when tourist spend money to travel or stay in hotel. Business have declined due to the general economic climate, and most of the travelers tend to be younger, they spend more money but do not stay as long as leisure travelers.

More recently the practice of ecotourism ( tourism with a conscious) has been implemented in many countries. Its base on trying to use sustainable materials in all fields of the industry. From farm to table in the culinary field to solar panels to generate energy etc. As we continue to read on in the following chapters we will learn more about the practice and methods being used in ecotourism.

    Chapter 9 summary: Tourism

Chapter 9 mainly focuses on the importance of tourism all around the globe. The presentation begins by breaking down what tourism specifically means by telling us that it’s one of the largest industries that exist. It goes on by telling us that tourism contributes to a very large percentage of the world’s economy. This industry works basically all year because people want to travel everywhere they can, so there has to be somewhere for them to stay and that way people can also make money out of it. This industry provides the government with a lot of money from the taxes gained from the travelers and also it helps create many more jobs all around the world. The industry of tourism is set to increase very rapidly which will help create even more jobs for the future generations. After this break down it goes on by talking about the history of tourism and the many ways that people would travel, how it all started, by train. After the trains came the cars, after the cars came the buses, after buses came the plains, and finally now by cruise. Traveling by train was very useful because trains can carry a large amount of goods and also people all over the US. Traveling in cars became a thing in Germany first, and now is basically the American life. The most convenient way to travel is by bus because it’s cheaper and you can relax and enjoy the ride. Now the airlines basically own us because even for one ticket you would have to spend almost $500 depending on where you want to go if it’s somewhere like paris it would probably be more. Airlines are improving their services but are also taking advantage of the new technology that they are providing and charging us more for it. For example, that new plain called the “Dreamliner 787”. If more airlines buy plains like this one then we will probably go broke just buying one ticket. Cruise ships are another thing, the price can vary depending on how long you’re staying and how many people are traveling and also the level of luxury you are interested in. It continues to talks about economic impact of tourism all around the world and how it’s important for the tourist to preserve the heritage and nature of the places that they visit. And it ends by giving us a brief description of what the future trend will be like.

Tourism is the world’s largest industry. Even the United Nations have a specialized agency called the World Tourism Organization which tries to create a more universally accessible and sustainable tourism, “International understanding, peace, prosperity and respect for human rights and freedoms.” Tourism helps many countries, especially the developing nations in which their tourism trade more with other countries.
After the industrial revolution, the invention of trains, automobiles and planes changed how people would travel. In the United States, people depend more in the use of cars, and unlike Europe and parts of Asia, people have taken to faster trains to travel than by air. Recently Boeing developed a new plane called the Dreamline 787, that takes advantage of newer technology that allows the plane to fly up to 9,700 miles without refueling, using up to 20% less fuel.
Ecotourism is much like what World Tourism Organization tries to accomplish, “Tourism with a conscience.” As the Ecotourism industry grown in developing nations, it not only helps the country and its people financially, but raises awareness of other countries political, environmental and social climate.

Tourism is one of the world’s largest industries. The World Tourism Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations, is the leading international organization in the field that plays a role in the development of sustainable tourism, the development of universally accessible tourism, the continuation of economic development, and international understanding, peace, prosperity, and respect for human rights and freedoms. In ancient times, traveling was mostly for religious or trading purposes. As technology developed, tourism also developed. The train made mass travel possible for everyone. Additionally, traveling by car is the largest segment of ground transportation, and creates accessibility to remote locations. Airlines are a vital instrument of travel and tourism nowadays, as well. Airline companies are paying more than travelers on fuel and other costs, yet the new Boeing Dreamliner 787 is capable of flying long-haul routes using up to 20 percent less fuel. Aside from travel by land, the cruise market has also expanded.
Tourism nearly always produces a positive economic impact. Tourists spend lavish amounts of money on hotels, restaurants, and purchased goods. On average, international travelers spend around $94 billion in travel in U.S. Tourism also creates a job market.

It also provides government with tax revenue. Tourism is growing and predicted to grow enormously in next 15 years. It is developing different areas that it consists of like lodging , food industry , entertainment and recreation .

Bus represents a more economic type of transport and finally the jet and cruise made travel fully smooth to travel internationally and developed a taste for travel among people.
Not long ago that airlines started creating aliances between each other so they can access each other’s feeder market. Airlines came up with hub and spoke system which enabled people to fly from one small city to another with less cost . New airplanes are deeveloping and they can fly for more time with no re-fueling.
Cruise market is huge and specially in US. Cruise ships offer different price option for everybody and so as different comfort level but opportunity to enjoy the travel nevertheless.
There are positiver and negative sides of tourism. It can be develping nad enhancing though destructive and it all depends on the amount of tourists and their behaviour, if they respect the host , the community and the land.
Ecotourism is growing specifically in developing countries trying to presevre natural resource and historic heritage.

    Chapter 9 – Tourism

Tourism is the world’s largest industry that is available year round, accounts for 9.1% of the gross domestic product worldwide and employs 8.8% of the global workforce. Tourism supplies the government with significant tax revenues due to the increase in disposable income and vacations and an increase in the number of people who have the time and money to travel. Tourism includes segments such travel, lodging, foodservice and recreation which are interdependent and rely on one another for business. There are five periods of tourism: Pre-industrial (pre 1840), the railway age, the automobile age, the jet aircraft age and the cruise ship age. During pre-industrial times travel was mainly for religious and trade reasons such as travel to Mecca, Jerusalem or Rome. During the railway age, the construction of rail travel influenced the building of cities and towns. This directly influenced the construction of hotels which were built near rails. Rails were used to move goods and people from place to place.
The automobile age influenced the construction of highways and motels and led to a decrease in rail travel because it was accessible to everyone. Air travel is an integral part of traveling and tourism. There are 5,500 planes over the US everyday. Competition between airlines help lower costs of tickets. According to the Hub and Spoke system, passengers can travel to and from small cities via hubs. It is beneficial because airlines would be able to service more cities at lower costs and maximize passenger loads which saves fuel. 9 million Americans use cruises as their form of travel each year with Carnival Cruise Lines as the most successful (20% of sales). International travelers spend 94 billion dollars in travel in the US with $100 billion generated in tax receipts. Every 1 in 10 jobs represents the tourism industry. The multiplier effect is demonstrated when new dollars from tourists are spent on travel, hotels, and restaurants, that money is then recycled and used to purchase more goods and generate more business.

  17. Chrest Laza says:

Tourism is one of the largest industry’s we have. Tourism is hand in hand with the United Nations making sure travelers are having sustainable tourism, and continuously developing the economy for the country’s. Tourism is giving the people who normally aren’t familiar with a certain country or area of the world, a different point of view pretty much on how others live and how the economy is. There is a lot of perks to tourism besides seeing new cultures, the government is receiving more sustainable tax revenue as well as opening borders for trade also opens up job opportunities. Tourism actually generates 1/10 jobs. As we had said tourism is one of the largest industries and it keeps skyrocketing with certain things because of the technology we have like ticketless flights you just show your phone, countries getting more healthy so more tourist will be attracted to visit. These are all pluses to this business that we are apart of.

  18. Bryan Caba says:

Chapter 9 shows why tourism has a big impact on the world and the hospitality management industry. Where would the hospitality industry be today without tourism? According to this chapter, by 2030 Tourism international arrivals are expecting to make $1.8 billion . Tourism is also very important because it helps with tax revenue. By making great profit through trade, tourism is making enough money through it’s GDP process.

  19. Herson says:

Chapter 9 shows us the reader why tourism plays a big role and a part on hospitality field and has a big impact on the world. Tourism gives the chance to people who don’t know a certain country or state or island a chance to travel and explore and get to know the area better. Tourism also Give people a bunch jobs and opportunities

  20. Tourism is the one of the biggest industries in the world. There are a lot of countries that depend on it. The whole process of tourism is all about traveling to new places, visiting cities, with monuments, beautiful lands and beaches. It is important in the economy, since tourism includes people spending money in hotels, restaurants and shopping.
It also plays a big role in the hospitality industry, if the service is excellent, people will come back to your hotel, or restaurant, etc… It represent a major part in the hospitality, the more tourist the country gets the better it is for the hospitality business.

  21. Chapter 9 informs us about tourism and how it is the worlds largest industry. The chapter also contains information on the benefits of tourism, the social/cultural impact of tourism, as well as what tourism does for the economy of smaller countries. We also learn of the many modes of transportation that tourism has impacted as well as vice versa. It is broken down into eras. These historical eras of tourism have been divided into five distinct categories, Pre-Industrial (prior to 1840), the railway age, the automobile age, the jet aircraft age, and the cruise ship age.
