Alter

Alter (verb): to make different in some particular, as size, style, course, or the like; modify

“But just how a visit to a park or other green space might alter mood has been unclear. Does experiencing nature actually change our brains in some way that affects our emotional health?” How walking in nature changes the brain by  GRETCHEN REYNOLDS

As I was reading this short paragraph, the word ALTER stopped me from reading further down. Alter sounds familiar but the spelling of it does not exist in my memories. Looking it up after trying to make a guess gives me a better understanding. I realized I’ve heard this word when my friends and I went to get their clothes altered. The reason why the word is familiar yet strange to me is that I’ve never bothered to look up for the spelling of it. “But just how a visit to a park or other green space might change the mood has been unclear.”

Eradicate

Eradicate (verb): to eradicate something is to get rid of it, to destroy it, and to kiss it goodbye.

I encounter the word while i was reading the article about reason why we shouldn’t take down the confederate monument.

“They didn’t like having black classmates because they had racist hearts. They honored racial prejudice. They harbored cultural bias. That, my friends, is what we must work toward eradicating.”

I’ve never hear of the word eradicate. I thought it’s related to time because the word ‘era’ is in it but after I search it up its no where close to it. I learn that the word is from the latin word ‘eraicare’ which have the similar meaning; to root out. It’s easier to understand the sentence; they honored racial prejudice. They harbored culture bias. Thats, my friends, is what we must work toward getting rid off.

Empower

Empower(verb):to give power or authority to; authorize, especially by legal or official means.

“Sociology can empower people to effectively address the problems affecting them by helping them develop a ‘sociology imagination.’ Page 10 “Sociology lecture notes”

I encounter the word while I was reading my sociology notes. I heard of the word before but I’ve never really search up the meaning of it, all I know is that the word “power” is in it. I took a guess and thought the word means gaining the power because the following sentence gave me a hint of it. ‘Affecting them by helping them develop…’ the word helping and developing both representing something positive. When I search up the word, it means giving powers, when the sentences were put together, it means “sociology can give powers to people to effectively address the problems…’
