Din

    I found this word today during our class when we received our Article for the final coming up. I didn’t notice the word at first until I re- read the article again and saw it and got confused by its meaning until I looked it up

Profligate

Profligate (adjective): recklessly extravagant or wasteful in the use of resources.

” And it’s also why if you’re profligate with information about yourself, you have precious, little to offer someone really special.”

I encountered this word while reading the article, “WE want Privacy, but Can’t Stop Sharing” by Kate Murphy. This is my first time encountering the word so before looking up the definition, I searched for synonyms so I can find a word that I do know with a similar meaning. I came across words such as wasteful, extravagant, and prodigal. Basically means someone who spends money wastefully.

Impoverished

Impoverished (adjective): reduced to poverty

I encountered this word while reading an article from class, “We want more Privacy, but Can’t Stop Sharing” by Kate Murphy. This is my first time encountering the word but I instantaneously assumed it had to with poverty.

Promiscuity

Promiscuity (noun) : the fact or state of being promiscuous

“Congress has so far been disinclined to protect citizens from their digital promiscuity or halt the data grabs perpetrated by Internet companies.”

I encountered this word while reading the article “We want Privacy, but Can’t Stop Sharing” by Kate Murphy. I used context clues and I know it had to do with personal mishaps of somebody. Or in other words things that happen in your daily life. Before knowing what promiscuity meant I had to learn the denotation of promiscuous. Promiscuous means characterized by or involving mingling or association, especially having sexual relations with a number of partners on a casual basis. An example of the word promiscuity in a sentence ; When I log onto Facebook I see the utmost promiscuity from kids I used to go to high school with.

Achingly

Achingly (adverb) : In a way that arouses or expresses intense sorrow or longing.

” Moreover, it’s hard to argue for the value of privacy when people eagerly share so much achingly personal information on social media.”

I came across this word while reading the article “We want Privacy. but Can’t Stop Sharing” by Kate Murphy. I tried using context clues to help discover the denotation of this word but it wouldn’t help. I then analyzed the word, “achingly”, it sounds like aching like a pain in your knee or back. I searched to see if achingly was a synonym to ache or aching and no they are not. The words have no correlation between each other. So after I just searched up achingly synonyms and words such as “painfully”, “sorely”, and “bitterly” came up. After that I finally searched up the definition. I gained an understanding of the word “Achingly” after finding out that it’s an adverb which means that its used to modify other verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. An example of the word in a sentence would be “and because of that, it is achingly funny.”

 

Rubble

Rubble (noun): broken fragments resulting from the decay or destruction of a building.

“You swallow hard when you discover that the old coffee shop is now a chain pharmacy, that the place where you kissed so-and-so is now a discount electronics retailer, that where you bought this very jacket is now rubble behind a blue plywood…”

I detected the word rubble while reading the passage City Limits. I pondered about the words definition and concluded that it meant a speck. While doing research on Merriam-Webster its definition appeared. I noticed that the definition said the destruction of a building which went perfectly with the author’s writing. He is trying to say where you may have bought your jacket the store has been destroyed and is under construction.

Consensus

Consensus (noun):  general agreement

” “But, in our crowdsourcing experiment, we found that if you ask a large enough number of people to pick between two pictures [and choose] which one is more beautiful or which one makes them happier, consensus usually emerges.””

When I first encountered the word consensus I tried brainstorming its definition. At first I thought it meant someone’s opinions because a few words before states, “which one makes them happier.” However, I wanted to be sure so I searched consensus up on Merriam-Webster.  Consensus correct definition is a general agreement. The passage is basically stating that an agreement usually occur at the end of the experiment.

Algorithms

Algorithm(noun): a precise rule (or set of rules) specifying how to solve some problem.

“We quantify how people psychologically perceive the urban environment, and using existing algorithm, we identify pleasurable detours.”

As I was reading the article, I came across this word algorithm. I was searching through my memories and noticed that I’ve never heard of the word. I tried using context clue while reading it over and over again and I couldn’t came up with a guess. After searching up the word, the sentence makes more sense for me. We quantify how people psychologically perceive the urban environment, and using existing set of rule, we identify pleasurable detours.

Amorphous

Amorphous

Amorphous (Adjective): having no definite form.

“Across from the airport, just east of the Strip, the whole conglomeration like strange amorphous triple junction…”

I encountered the word Amorphous while I was reading Walk with Me by David L. Ulin. I never heard the word before and the word before it is strange, so I know it had to be something was strange however, in this case the definition of the word is shapeless or formless. In the sentence he is saying how “Some strange shapeless triple junction.” the word origin came from the Greek word morphe and was first used in 1731.

Philanthropist

Philanthropist

Philanthropist (noun) one who makes an active effort to promote human welfare.

“I did, however, start to recognize the land marks: the Boulevard Mall, the Las Vegas Country Club, Sunrise Hospital, all built in the 1950’s and 1960’s by Moe Dalitz, who wanted to be remembered not as a bootlegger but as a philanthropist.”

When I first encountered the word philanthropist, I used context clues and I know it was the study of something. I furthered my knowledge by searching up the word on www.merriam-webster.com and got the definition stated above. The definition means the health and well-being of persons. It can be used in a sentence such as spoken as a true philanthropist.
