New chapter of my life

Project #1

Moving on from the past and starting a new chapter

Hello. Welcome to Donald Nians bio and I would to introduce myself. I am currently eighteen years old and my nationality is half Korean and half Taiwanese. I went to St. Francis Preparatory high school and I was pretty active in school. I was in the Korean club and I was an athlete. I was in the freshmen basketball team and I did track as well. Currently, I have a job which is teaching little kids basketball. My major in City technology is computer engineering and I chose computer engineering at city tech because I heard the program there is really well and I do like engineering. Engineering is interesting because thereā€™s a lot of math and physics in it.Ā All of these characteristics that I have included in this paragraph shows who I am as a person.

When I was around 5 years old, I used to play with legos. If you don’t know what legos are, legos are usually toys you can build with. Legos did make me want to become an engineer because there are alot of engineering jobs out there, but building or drawing something new is similar like legos. After I stopped playing with legos, I really didn’t know what to be in the future. My father would say become a doctor or those basic jobs meaning a successful job that’s seen a lot. My father said to become one of those because it’s a better job than any others which is not true. However my mother is different because she told me if I like the job, then i should stay with it. Moving on to middle school, I was the only Asian boy in the school because it was a private school and the area didn’t really have a lot of Asians. In middle school, it was tough for me because obviously I was the only Asian boy however some of the kids would pick on me or would be racist towards me. I didn’t really care what they said because I know they were irrelevant to my life however I did learn a lesson from them. I learned that in this world, there’s always two sides which is someone being nice and someone being mean without any reasons. I believed that everyone should be nice to each other even if they are different races because God made all of us equally.

In high school, I did made a lot of friends and I got to know more about the teachers. I felt like my high school was another home because every one of my friends were nice to me and some of them would have the same personality like me. I actually learned and focused more in high school because some of the teachers made the topics really interesting by using their life experiences into the topic. I thought it was going to be the same as middle school besides being an Asian boy because I know the school is larger, but high school changed my life. I used to not be socially, active, and outgoing because I was too shy and I was not confident at all. All of these characteristics that I have included in this paragraph shows who I am as a person.

After graduating high school, I told myself a new chapter is starting soon and I would need to focus more because I know getting jobs are harder these days and I would like to support my family better than they supported me. Going to college in the city is different because of transportation and the people here are more mature and older than me. Now, I do need to move on from the past and start my new life in order to make a better future.

In the picture, it shows a boy looking depressed and lonely. The picture is black and white too. If a person sees this picture for his/her first time, they may think the same way as I thought. However, the boy is reflecting his life and he was lonely once. This picture represents me in the past. The boy also looks like he made bad decisions in life. I, myself did not make a lot of good decisions in life too. But I do regret I did them and I did learn a lesson. Even today, I donā€™t make the same mistakes again.

Right now, I donā€™t know what I should become in the future because there are a lot of programs in different colleges. However, I am interested in my major, business, and Criminal Justice. I look forward to do well in college because I do want to make my parents proud and I plan to support my family in the future.

I just wanna be me

I Just Want to Be Me

For the last four years, as a high school student I had one goal in mind: graduate and as a

Graduate I was looking ahead to college and my future. How did I achieve that goal? I had made

A plan when I entered high school, followed that plan, and in the end, was successful. Before

Entering college, or now that Iā€™m in college there are specific goals that Iā€™ve set to get on track

Toward success.

  • Excel in my Academics: From my past experience in high school Iā€™ve figured out that my freshman year sets the tone for the next four years and with the job market as competitive as today, GPAā€™s are important. Itā€™s just not enough to have a college degree; you need to be committed to excellence.

Focus on My Health: In the past, my mother worried about my health. But now that Iā€™m in college, Iā€™m responsible for taking care of myself. Eat right, get rest, and take vitamins and exercise. This wonā€™t only contribute to my overall health, but it will also help concentrate and excel in class.

  • Learn to Self-advocate: My mother didnā€™t come to college with me. So she canā€™t fight my battles any longer. College is a time for me to begin advocating for myself. Speak up let my requests be know, and handle my conflicts like an adult. Starting self-advocacy in college will make my life easier and help me move towards independence.

Financial Goals:

Before college, I was relying on my mother so that she can help me meet my financial needs. But now that I work and go to school not only an I responsible for my own financial needs but Iā€™m also in charge of managing my own money.

  • Donā€™t get into debit: Iā€™ve heard from a lot of people that itā€™s very easy to get into debt. Credit card offers abound once you start college. Most students graduate college with thousands of dollars of credit card debit. So going to do myself a favor and use debit cards because credit cards require a payment every month, and I donā€™t have that type of cash.

  • Borrow only what I need: I know in my case itā€™s tempting to borrow as much money as much money as student loans will allow. I know college students usually borrow money for tuition and other college expenses, entertainment, etc. But I hope I donā€™t fall into this trap. I want to be a smart student loan borrower

  • Work: It can teach accountability and can help me supplement funds I earn and help give me a limit on the money I borrow. Work can also bring valuable networking opportunities.

Career Goals: Itā€™s best to begin setting career goals in college. When graduation comes along, Iā€™ll be ready to jump into the job market, setting myself apart from other unprepared graduates.

  • Career: Try to learn all I can about my future career path. Talk to professionals in the field when I get an opportunity and if theyā€™re inspirational shadow them if possible, and make a connection with my career center here at city tech.

Now if your take a look at my avatar on my profile itā€™s a picture of a saying by Julius Caesar which means I came, I saw, I conquered. Every time I become weary or unmotivated thatā€™s whatĀ  keeps me going because basically the majority of my life thatā€™s what Iā€™ve been doing. Since a child ive had to learn from my errors and rebuild whatever it is that I may have knocked down and the same way that Iā€™ve conquered my other obstacles I will come and see the next obstacles and conquer it as well.

The life of Brandon

To introduce myself I am a freshman at New York City College of Technology pursuing a bachelorā€™s degree in Computer Systems Technology. Since young I had a robust passion for computers, I would always tinker with my old PC which was considered a relic to all the other ones out at the time. Since then I wanted to learn more on how computers work both hardware and software. I have a very strict mindset when it comes to school and social life. Basically, I feel free to do whatever I want if I have good report card at the end of each semester. I’m not like everybody else who has that set goal in life. I do look forward on becoming an IT Specialist for a high-end tech company such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, etc.Ā  You could call that a goal if you want, I see it more as a plan.Ā  One of many plans I have for myself, another plan I have is to maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher. If Iā€™m really motivated this semester I know it’s something I can achieve. I also plan on taking summer classes next year so that I can reach the achievement of an early graduation. Thus, taking me a step closer to living a rich and opulent lifestyle in the “Golden State”, also known as California. I want to move to the west coast because I feel as if thatā€™s where all the opportunities are for me, career wise. California is well known for having its vast number of technologically-based cities. Also, because I have dreams of living on Rodeo Drive in a big mansion.

Enough about my academic life and onward to the communal aspect of my life. I live in a full house which consists of 3 brothers and both my male and female progenitors. Living in Mill Basin has its pros and cons. I live near many buses so public transportation isn’t a hindrance. I graduated from John Jay Secondary School of Law, which is in Park Slope. But I feel as if Iā€™m far from everything. I have strong passion for music as well with some of my favorite rappers being A$AP Rocky, Playboi Carti, Max B, Don Q, and many more the list can go on. I also enjoy listening to old 80’s rock and soul music, only when Iā€™m with my dad though. Iā€™m heavily inspired by music because I feel like itā€™s more than just song lyrics and a produced beat. Itā€™s a way of art and thatā€™s how some artists portray their lives, through music. Thereā€™s underground rappers that I listen to daily such as ThouxanbanFauni, UnoTHeActivist, SkiMaskTHeSlumpGod, etc. I would consider working in the music industry if the IT field fails to comply with me thatā€™s the backup plan. Probably become a studio engineer or music producer.

In my profile picture, thereā€™s several high-end tech companies that are well known throughout the world. My intention is to get my degree in computer technology and work for one of these companies. I know I must work hard in college to complete this quest especially if I want to be a computer technician for a brand like Apple. I feel as if Apple doesnā€™t want to hire just any computer nerd, they want people willing to make change to the world, same goes for the other companies.

Some people may get a false idea and think that these are the only tech companies that I would want to work for in the future. There are over 100ā€™s of tech companies I would like to take my experiences to after I graduate college, some not even in the U.S. I just want to expand my horizons and make the world more technologically advanced.

I hope that after reading this you will gain a better understanding of who I am as a person and what I intend on becoming in the distant future. Overall, I am an easy person to get along with and Iā€™ve been told countless times that Iā€™m good at keeping conversations interesting. Throughout my years of college, I hope to meet tons of good people that can benefit me in the long run. I wish to just enjoy myself and have fun all the while working hard and staying focused.

I Guess This Is Me

https://openlab.citytech.cuny.edu/roseneng1101f2017/?p=153&preview=true

Hello every one my name is Casylee. I’m currently a freshman at City Tech, this is my first semester. This picture that I choose was the day I graduated high school which was this year in June. Not only was it the day I graduated but the day I was going to start a new chapter in my life. This chapter was beginning college. Ā When I first started high school I thought that it was going to be how it was on television. Ā People being cruel and nasty to one another but it actually wasnā€™t, it was the opposite from that. High school wasnā€™t really hard and now that Iā€™m writing this and thinking back, college is way different. College is hard and this pictures shows that if I could make it throughout high school alive Iā€™m pretty sure I can get through college alive. It is going to be tough but life isnā€™t easy and sometimes you gotta get through the rough days to get to the better ones. It may seem that in this picture my smile is fake but that’s not the case. This day was important because with all the work I had to do I got to the finish line. It showed that I went through a lot and that Iā€™m a person who works hard for what they want no matter what it is.

In this picture something that stands out Ā is my face, I’m wearing makeup, I have my hair done, and the clothing I’m wearing stands out. Some people may misinterpreted the picture as me going out on lunch or breakfast. As well since the picture is cropped the other person in the picture is my father. He was at my graduation, so people may think that it isnā€™t my father who is next to me. Maybe itā€™s somebody else that I was hanging out with that day but it actually wasn’t,. The reason why I cropped out my fathers face was because I like the way I came out in the picture. Plus it very rare that I show my face so I had to crop him out for my own purposes. As well this picture was taken by me, I honestly didn’t want to take a picture with my dad for my own reasons. Some people may view this picture and see that I like to wear a lot of makeup. That’s not the case at all, I only wear makeup when it’s necessary. So don’t mistaken me as somebody who cakes my face, in other words someone who wear a lot of makeup.

My profile shows and tells a little about me and what I want to achieve in my life. It gives people a little inside of me and who I am and what Iā€™m about. I donā€™t expect people to know exactly who I am and every detail about me but I hope people see that Iā€™m a hard working person. That I want to make it far in life and becoming someone. With millions of people living in this world, a lot of people say that they are going to make it to the top and never do. They never tell people how they did it and if they donā€™t they probably cheated there way through life. Thatā€™s not what I want people to see me as, I want the opposite. I want to have an amazing career so I can support my family and possible encouraged other to do the same for themselves in the future.

To add on, it matters a lot that people see that Iā€™m just not somebody who is lazy and doesnā€™t work. I want people to see that it took me awhile to get where Iā€™m at and to show people that I did have some downfalls in my life but, it made me stronger. The big picture is that I wouldnā€™t be here without people doubting me and not believe in my strengths. With me being in college I expect to be better than I was in high school. I expect to do better and be on the top. As well to actually learn what Iā€™m being taught rather just memorizing it. In City Tech I expect to push myself to the limit to where I graduate and am proud of what I have done for my family but proud to do it for myself.

A not so sure journey to a successful life

Nelly

Hello, my name is Ish-shenelle Jones and I am seventeen years old. I was born in Kingston, Jamaica and emigrated to America at the age of seven. On the twenty second of September I will be eighteen years of age. As a freshman student currently attending New York City College of Technology, my goal is to obtain a 3.5 average or higher. Achieving this short term goal will eventually help me to earn my bachelors in science of nursing (BSN) and fulfill my aspiration of becoming a pediatric nurse. Although Iā€™m currently majoring in Liberal arts, I hope to change my major to nursing, after exploring different areas of study for my first semester. Seeing to it that Liberal arts classes are related to classes of the nursing major I might not have to be in a rush. Implementing this strategy will help me to visualize myself in a profession this suits me best . In order for me to reach my goal I know that by now my mind should already be set, however I will not become oblivious to other interest I may have. After all, after college, whatever I plan to do will become my lifestyle and I rather wake up happy in the morning.
When I was younger I wanted to become an Author. I would sit down and observe other books I’ve read and I would use those books as a guide for creating my own. At the age of thirteen I wanted to make my book interesting and write about situation that could have an sentimental effect on mostly children but people overall. I wanted my book to be about something kids could relate to and look for comfort in. That is how I created my first mini chapter book known as ā€œAnnieā€™s Play-dateā€. The title of the book was deceptively jolly, but it turned out to me way more emotional. To be more specific the book was about a young girl whose dad died, she began isolating herself from her friends as well as her mom. Instead of communicating with her mother and peers, sheā€™d rather sit alone and reflect on the fun times she had with her dad. Her mother became worried and began inviting friends over to cheer her up a bit. Overall the book left the audience with the lesson that anyone that genuinely loved you and was forced to leave your life will always be with you in spirit. Not only that but they would rather you share happiness with someone else than being miserable about the past.
When sharing the book with my peers at school, they immediately thought that I was writing about a personal experience but that wasnā€™t necessarily the case. I’ve had friends and relatives who have lost their father figures or someone close to them that shaped the way they treat others around them. Even though Iā€™m lucky enough to have both parents around, I wanted to try and understand what theyā€™re going through. From my perspective my book gave off the message that Itā€™s acceptable to cherish old moments while at the same time being open to new experiences. Unfortunately writing books havenā€™t sparked my interest anymore, even though
After analyzing all my experiences I had in my early years, as far as things I am passionate about such as ( writing books, making others feel content with themselves, and being supportive, I noticed that those were my aesthetic sensibilities and that they have always been with children. The image I chose to represent myself is a nurse/ doctor checking the heartbeat of a small child. This image resonates with me because it captures all of the thing i wish to accomplish in my adult life. The thought of being able to help a child feel better and not only that but, to put the mind of his or hers parents at ease is something that has always seemed truly gratifying. This women in the image is smiling and appears to be genuinely happy with what she is doing in her life.
Although in my opinion this image appears to very clear and straightforward, there are those who may interpret it as something else. Some may believe that the image depicts a mother who is simply playing with her child. Both the ā€œmotherā€ and ā€œher childā€ are sharing the same expression. The woman could have just come home from work as a vet or a nurse in nursing home and greeted her child. Even though to me this interpretation seems far-fetched, I can still see how such a conclusion can be drawn. For me this image is a constant reminder of what awaits my future. It helps to motivate me and encourage me to continue to pursue my goal. Even with the many obstacles I face in my day-to-day life having this image around me helps to keep me in good spirits.

Cover Letter for Project #1

In class, we’ll reflect on Project #1 by writing a cover letter for the work you have already posted on our site. Please answer these in any order you wish:

In combining both letter and process post, please write about the following:

  • What are you most proud of in Project #1?
  • What challenged you the most in Project #1?
  • Did you meet the requirements of the assignment?
  • If you had another few hours to work on your project, what would you change?
  • How much time did you spend on each part of the project? Overall?
  • What did you take away from reading your classmatesā€™ work, from their comments, and from class discussions?
  • If you could have changed the assignment, how would you have changed it? What would you insist on not changing?
  • Is there anything else I should know about your work or about you as a writer or as a student?

My comments to you will come in the form of a letter in response to your cover letter, so it is helpful to me to read about how you work and what you think of your work.

Please take the time to revise or edit your work and be sure the final version is online by 8pm tonight.

Project #1

This picture is a painting of Aristotle and Socrates, two of the most famous philosophers ever. I chose this picture not only because of my fondness of philosophy but because these men represent debate. Socrates even got a method of discussion and questioning named after him – the Socratic Seminar and Socratic Questioning, respectively.

My name is Janin Goodwin – though my preference is to be called Jay – and I am a freshman at The New York City College of Technology, colloquially known as City Tech. I’m majoring in Liberal Arts solely because no other majors piqued my interest. I had been accepted to SUNY Delhi with the intention of majoring in Marketing. However, after considering where that major would take me career-wise and how the career(s) didn’t fit who I am as a person (typically quiet and secluded), I decided not to go. My high school grades weren’t the best as I never tried at all and only maintained an 80 average so my choices for a school were limited. I settled on City Tech and Liberal Arts in order to transfer to a another school that both has my major and is out of the city. The only reason that I’d stay in the city is if I get accepted to Columbia University. Otherwise, I’m looking at schools that offer me majors in economics, history, or political science.

College seems to be far more manageable than high school. Not because high school was difficult – it wasn’t – but because of the freedom and increased amount of time we have allotted for whatever weĀ need/want to do. The freedom to choose your schedule is probably the best part about college by far. I can use the extra time that I wouldn’t have had during high school to read, write, and improve upon my photography skills. I’m also interested in learning about history, politics, and philosophy. I’ll explain why I’m interested in each of the aforementioned activities and in what capacity I fulfill my desire for each a bit later.

College seems to be a great place to meet like-minded and not so like-minded individuals, both of which will benefit me socially and intellectually. It’s very important to me that my ideas are challenged, stretched, and strained in order to solidify or alter them. I believe it’s equally important to do the same for others. I find that most people are very set in their beliefs, which I believe is a flaw. This idea of people’s ideas being set in stone is problematic as people should be open to new beliefs if new information is presented. Obviously one shouldn’t be forced to believe a certain ideal if their own fundamental truths conflict with the ideas being presented but they shouldn’t completely shut out any opposing ideals without hearing the reasoning behind said ideals. For example, if someone believed in God, I believe it’s important for them to at least consider the idea that there may be no God and either accept and reject that belief. In a nutshell, beliefs shouldn’t be axioms; question everything.

Reading

I enjoy reading because the elements that can be put into a story. With fiction, there can always be hidden meaning in stories, even with something like George Orwell’s Animal Farm. On the surface, it’s a story about Animals in harsh conditions overthrowing their human master and building their own society. In reality, it’s about Joseph Stalin and Soviet Russia both before and after he came to power and the use of military force to reinforce his tyrannical rule over his people.

Writing

I enjoy writing Ā because I am able to express my viewpoints in the most creative way possible. I write about nearly everything and always try to employ a hidden meaning, whether it’s me speaking on human nature or something like nihilistic philosophy. I enjoy writing short stories though I am currently outlining what I’d like to be my first novel. I began writing in 7th grade and stopped in 9th grade until my junior year. Since then, I’ve been doing some form of creative writing almost daily. I’m in the process of writing 3 stories, one about religion, one about a militia taking over a small town, and a horror story about eyes.Ā I hope to speak on the creation of a Godless society, usurpation in a small town, and anxiety.

Photography
Photography is an art form that has interested me since I was a very young child. Not so much as it being my passion, but a hobby. I enjoy capturing pictures of people in the darkness and the beauty of the earth when it’s coated by light. The blending of colors, tones, and angles can create pictures that’ll make your heart stop (in a good way, don’t worry). I cannot count the amount of times that I’ve seen a picture of an Icelandic mountainside, Ā the New York City skyline, or the Colosseum in Rome and just went, “wow”. Photography gives me a better reason to travel than “I want to experience new things”, which I find to be overly cliche.

Overall, I enjoy learning new things and having my ideas challenged. I also enjoy challenging peopleā€™s ideas, no matter how controversial. My profile has a small hint of my philosophies and what I hope to do with my current enrollment in City Tech.

Megan Whittaker
Professor Rosen
ENG 1101

Project 1: Introducing Yourself

My name is Megan Whittaker and I am a Freshman at City College of Technology. Although my school has about 1700 students , I’d like to consider myself extremely unique. My passions and goals are ultimately different from my peers however we are all one large community of great team members. My biggest passions are nails and makeup. Since the age of 7 or 8 I’ve been interested in all different types of nails , every shape , color , and design. I never liked the thought of doing my own nails or doing someone else’s but I like to visit nails salons in different areas and try new different styles. I’ve sat in about 50 plus nails salons and I can truly say the culture and structure of every one is distinctive. Makeup on the other hand is a passion I’ve recently became fond of. I specifically like eyebrows because no two eyebrows are ever the same and it is fun to sit on my down time with all my brushes and work on my technique.
One thing I would consider very unique about myself is the philosophy I live by. Although it may sound simple it has great meaning in my life. It is simply ā€œlive life to your own standardā€. To me this means more than the surface because today’s generation has set the most ludicrous standards and I refuse to join in. Being a teenager now means you’re supposed to have the most expensive clothing, longest weave, latest sneakers and most updated electronics. I personally buy the things I like regardless of whether it’s expensive or it’s deemed ā€œpopularā€ in the time. By setting my own standards for myself not only do I make myself happy I also can see how I grow as a person. I’ve realized how much I’ve matured and how my interest have changed. It is important to me that I live life to my own standard because I give myself guidelines and goals to follow and I know I will accomplish themā€. My current goal is more like a 10 year plan, I plan to be working as a corrections officer in the next 4 years and I will achieve this by passing the corrections test at the age of 21. After that I plan to go back to school and take courses that will help me get into child protective services. My ultimate goal in life is to expand my education and gain knowledge about various branches of the law and how they work simultaneously to run the country.
The avatar shown in my profile is a picture of my mother and I after my high school graduation. This picture can depict the relationship I share with my mother. She is my best friend and my number one supporter. We purposely decided to sit back to back to show that we will always have each other no matter what the situation is. This picture also represents the two things I mentioned previously that I have a passion for. My nails were done white with one finger a shade of silver sparkles and they were cut in coffin style. I got my nails done in the Bronx around my house and that specific salon is becoming my regular place. I did my nails white because it went very well with the gold dress that I was wearing. The second thing i’m passionate about, makeup, is represented in this photo by my eyebrows. I woke up extra early this day just to practice and make sure they were perfect and graduation ready. This avatar can also depict the beginning of my journey in achieving my long time goals. My diploma shows I graduated from a Law and Justice high school. This marks the first step for me because I was given a gist of law and what skills you would need to ensure success in pursuing a law career.
As well as doing a good job at representing me , my avatar left out some major details. This shows the end of my highschool career but it doesn’t show how hard I worked to make that moment possible. I had to deal with the fatal shooting of my brother and this put a major halt on my life. With losing my older brother I lost a lot of motivation and ambition. It took me a few years to get over his death but I knew I had to find a positive way to cope with my feelings and bettering my education became that outlet for me. One may misinterpret this picture and think this is the end of my journey but this only marks the beginning. Many people graduate from highschool and just stop there. I am proud to say I graduated and am continuing to expand my knowledge. The only thing that might also be misleading in this photo is one can assume that since the background is greenery that I might be fond of it but I absolutely attest that. I’m not very happy about flowers , bushes , trees or anything of that nature. Another miss interpretation someone might have of my avatar is that I graduated to make my mom proud like every other teenager. I morley graduated to show myself how determination could solve any goal.
Hence, you can basically know a lot about me by visiting my my profile. You can discover my likes and ambitions , you can see what relationships I have and so forth. My bio matters because it tells a little bit of my story and I can always look back on this to see my growth as a person. I expect this essay to work as a guide, I will be able to see where I started and see how far I would like to go. In the future I plan for some of this to change however. I would like to make bigger and better goals, develop new interest and gain more experience at city tech.

Future musician artist in the making

This is my first year on New York College Of Technology. I am majoring in computer science and I am hoping to move forward in my dream of becoming a musician using the skills I learn throughout my years in college my favorite genre of music is experimental, progressive rock, R&B and hip-hop . I graduated fromĀ Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School. My parents both originated from Dominican Republic, I was born and raised here in Brooklyn. my hobbies include, practicing making music from a program called fruity loops and my piano, skateboarding, and playing video games. I am also currently learning how to drive.

My personality is best described as easy-going, although I become very stressed and anxious easily I always try to look at the positive sides of situations. To some people this becomes very annoying or obnoxious but some see it as a shift of perspective when things start to get a panic vibe to them. I try my best in everything I do even if its the first time doing it. my philosophy in life has to be “Everything will be alright in the end, and if its not alright then it not the end”- Damon Albarn

I am currently trying to major in computer science and the first time, I came to the conclusion I wanted to make computers was not too long ago. when I had no computer experience before last year I bought all the parts to build a computer to play video games with my friends, I watched tutorials and learned how to put it all together. Once it was complete I had a sense of determination to continue fiddling with programs and parts to see what would work, I found it entertaining to see what works and doesn’t and that’s when IĀ came to the conclusion: I want to work with computers to make music.
